Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Koala Walk - Kangaroo Island, South Australia (May 2018)
We mourn for this magnificent, special place and the beautiful animals on Kangaroo Island, South Australia.
Hanson Bay beach - Kangaroo Island
Hanson Bay
On the south coast of Kangaroo Island.
This small, secluded bay sits along the south coast of Kangaroo Island just west of the famous Kelly Hill Conservation Park. It is accessible via West River Road, which runs south off of South Coast Road. West River Road is an unsealed road, but like many places the harder it is to get to the more beautiful it is.
Hanson Bay is dominated by the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary that offers its guests the opportunity to stay right onsite in one of its self-contained beachfront cabins. Staying right on the property gives visitors the chance to enjoy the pristine beach, as it is great for swimming, snorkelling, canoeing and fishing.
The wildlife sanctuary itself is known for its bushwalking, with 90-minute guided tours the best way to explore the 100 hectare property. On this guided walk visitors will have the opportunity to see koalas, kangaroos, tamer wallabies, echidnas, possums and bats living in their natural habitat.
Koala Avenue - Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to Kangaroo Island's famous 'Koala Walk'. This leisurely walk is the best place on the island to see these animals in the wild in large groups. Up to 20 koalas may be together at one time relaxing in the shade of the Eucalyptus trees.
The sanctuary is really a small cafe and visitors centre, that is surrounded by tall gum trees in which this colony of koalas have made their home. There are no cages, fences or barriers around the koalas, they are free to come and go as they please, and do whatever they normally would in the wild.
Despite being called a sanctuary, it really is like wandering into a wild colony of koalas.
Stay: Hanson Bay Wildlife Santuary Cabins
Need a quiet weekend away? Fancy an ocean view? HBWS offer six self-contained cabins just metres from a safe swimming beach.
The cabins are a short drive from the Sanctuary, but if you'd like added adventure, you can hike in along the private beach track which connects to the KI Wilderness trail (14km one way).

2011 Kangaroo Island Koalas [:59] Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Koala Park
Sorry for the shaky video. I shot this with my Canon 60D w/ 70-200mm + 2x extender for telephoto, and zoomed in it's VERY heavy and hard to hold still. Need a monopod or tripod if I shoot a lot more video like this. Or one of the handheld solutions for using it like a movie camera.
Recorded the video to capture the vocalization of the miffed male koala. He did NOT like me walking around his tree or looking at his females and babies!
We were at the 2011 Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary on west Kangaroo Island out by Flinders Chase National Park. Their Koala Walk is open every day. Only cost us $2.50AU each for Koala viewing. Was often called best place to see Koalas in the wild on Kangaroo Island.
I can't believe we took all these pix today. KJ was pretty patient and let me take about 300 of the koalas to get the ones you see here. 90% of those koalas were about ~50-75 feet up in the Eucalyptus trees.
I used the DUMMIES settings on more than half of these with only a couple of tweaks. And then I messed around in iPhoto with most of the photos.
These little dudes were SO SLEEPY until the sun went down. Then the koalas packed up and took off. I wish I had decent pix of the 2 with babies. They were SO CUTE, but also 100+ feet up in the air in the deep leaves...
