China's Ice City Harbin 2019
China's northern ice city of Harbin has built its tourism sector into a 10-billion-U.S. dollar-level industry, with its renown as one of the country's top winter destinations continuing to draw in huge numbers of visitors.
As the capital city of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, Harbin has been making good use of its ecological resources including ice and snow, and forests and wetlands, in an effort to build itself into a top-notch, all-season tourist location, while also being a popular international tourist attraction in winter.
Tourism became Harbin's second 10-billion-U.S. dollar-level industry in 2016. The city received more than 77.12 million tourists in 2017 and made a total revenue of over 117 billion yuan (around 17 billion U.S dollars).
It has gained international attention for its increasingly popular winter extravaganza, the International Ice and Snow Festival, which features elaborate ice sculptures, competitions and a plethora of winter sports.
Every winter, visitors from home and overseas flock to Harbin, increasing consumption, creating jobs and greatly stimulating the local economy.
Diverse winter activities have been appearing since Harbin held its first ice lantern fair in 1963, with the first ice and snow festival following in 1985.
The Harbin Ice and Snow World, a theme park with snow sceneries and magnificent ice sculptures, was built by the local government in 1999 to welcome in the new millennium.
Covering an area of 800,000 square meters, the park has helped advance ice and snow art in China into a major stage which features elaborate modern designs and mechanization, and continues to impress visitors from all around the world.

The Harbin Ice and Snow Festival 2019 | China
Harbin is known for its incredible Snow and Ice festival. When you search Harbin, China you will more than likely see pictures of the incredible ice castles and sculptures pop up at the top of the page. For good reason.
It has been on our list of things to do in China for the longest time. We did a full-day trip to both the Sun Island snow sculpture exhibition and the Snow and Ice world and loved every minute of it. There are two parks that are a part of the annual ice festival and we give you a look at both so you can decide for yourself if you should see both or pick one.
We chose to find our own way to the parks, via Didi, Chinese Uber and buy our tickets at the parks, but there are tons of tours that run through the park as well. Here is an option if you are in need of a reliable tour service:

Snow and Ice Festival in the World ( Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival )
Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival
The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is an annual winter festival that takes place with a theme in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China, and now is the largest ice and snow festival in the world. At first participants in the festival were mainly Chinese, however it has since become an international festival and competition. The festival includes the world's biggest ice sculptures.
Officially, the festival starts on January 5 and lasts one month. However, exhibits often open earlier and stay longer, weather permitting. While ice sculptures are erected throughout the city, there are two main exhibition areas:
Sun Island is a recreational area on the opposite side of the Songhua River from the city, which features an expo of enormous snow sculptures. Ice and Snow World is an area open at night which features illuminated full size buildings made from blocks of 2–3' thick ice taken directly from the Songhua River. At first China celebrated it then Harbin took over. During the festival, there are ice lantern park touring activities held in many parks in the city. Winter activities during the festival include Yabuli alpine skiing, winter-swimming in the Songhua River, and the ice-lantern exhibition in Zhaolin Garden. Harbin is located in Northeast China and receives cold winter wind from Siberia. The average temperature in summer is 21.2 °C (70.2 °F), and –16.8 °C (1.8 °F) in winter. Annual lows of -35 °C (–31 °F) are not uncommon.
The festival originated in Harbin's traditional ice lantern show and garden party that takes place in winter, which began in 1963. It was interrupted for a number of years during the Cultural Revolution, but has since been resumed when an annual event at Zhaolin Park was announced on January 5, 1985. In 2001, the Harbin Ice Festival was merged with Heilongjiang's International Ski Festival and got its new formal name, the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. In 2007, the festival featured a Canadian themed sculpture, in memoriam of Canadian doctor Norman Bethune. It was awarded a Guinness Record for the world's largest snow sculpture: 250 metres long, 28 feet (8.5 m) high, using over 13,000 cubic metres of snow. The composition consisted of two parts: the Niagara Falls and the crossing the Bering Strait (the latter depicting the migration of the First Nations). In 2014, the festival celebrated its 30th anniversary with the theme 50-Year Ice Snow, Charming Harbin. Various fairs, competitions and expos were held from 20 December 2013 to February 2014. In 2015, the 31st Harbin Ice Snow Festival opened on Jan. 5 and was themed Ice Snow Harbin, Charming China Dreams around the world [ with opening ceremony, firework show, ice lanterns , birthday parties, snow sculpture competitions and expos, as well as winter swimming, winter fishing, group wedding ceremony, fashion shows, concerts, ice sport games lasting from 22 December 2014 to early March 2015.
Swing saws are used to carve ice into blocks, taken from the frozen surface of the Songhua River. Chisels, ice picks and various types of saws are then used by ice sculptors to carve out large scaled ice sculptures, many of them intricately designed and worked on all day and night prior to the commencement of the festival. Deionised water can also be used, producing ice blocks as transparent as glass to make clear sculptures rather than translucent ones. Multicoloured lights are also used to give colour to ice, creating variations on sculptured spectacles when lit up especially at night. Some ice sculptures made in previous years include: buildings and monuments of different architectural types and styles, figures including animals people and mythical creatures, slippery dips or ice slides and lanterns. Apart from winter recreational activities available in Harbin, these exquisitely detailed, mass-produced ice sculptures are the main draw card in attracting tourists around the world to the festival.

Exquisite ice sculptures decorate Harbin
It is said that the ice lantern derives from the fisherman's ship light on Songhua River. Records show that large-scale ice lantern show began in 1963, when Harbin held the first Garden Party, which was the very first organized fair for the ice lantern in China, and pioneered the domestic culture of ice and snow popular nowadays.

CHINA: HARBIN: ICE & SNOW FESTIVAL
(8 Jan 2001) Mandarin/Nat
Harbin, in China's northernmost province, is the venue for one of the world's largest ice and snow festivals.
This winter, until the end of February, the city is holding the largest and most colourful celebration ever for the first winter of the new millennium.
It's a celebration of nature and the way snow and ice have become part of the history, culture, arts and lives of the people of Harbin.
The people of Harbin on northern China have built a giant ice and snow fantasy world for the 17th Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival.
The annual festival is one of the four largest ice and snow festivals in the world.
Boasting the world's largest manmade ice and snow garden, it covers an area of 333-thousand square metres.
A total of 10-thousand cubic metres of ice and 200-thousand cubic metres of snow have gone into making the 900-metre long and 370-metre wide garden.
There's no need to travel to Tibet because people can see the snow-built Mount Everest and Potala Palace here.
The Mount Everest exhibit is the world's largest manmade snow landscape, made with 80-thousand cubic metres of snow.
Six manmade suns, laser lights, coloured ice lights go to make the Ice and Snow World a bright, spectacular fairy land.
The ice and snow festival includes the 27th Ice Lantern Art Show, with the theme of New Century, Dream of Ice and made up of more than 2-thousand ice carvings.
About 30-thousand cubic metres of ice has been used, making it the largest ice lantern art show since 1963 when the show began.
Chinese people have used lanterns in their celebrations for centuries.
Besides the traditional ice sculptures of pagodas, bridges, lanterns, human figures and palaces, this year people can see something more modern.
Many visitors have their picture taken in front of the ice Millennium Altar.
The ice and snow festival is an important part of life in Harbin.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
It brings a lot of interests to our life. In summer, people can go to park. In winter, if there is no ice and snow festival, we might just stay at home to watch television. What a boring life that is going to be.
SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop
Among the thousands of ice works, one small ice sculpture is catching people's eye.
It's an ice snake, called Cobra.
The forthcoming Chinese new year will be the year of the snake, and many believe it's going to be a good one.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
People born in the year of snake are mostly clever and sharp, so I think the year of the snake is a good one and people will be successful in every aspect.
SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop
Harbin is one of China's heavy industry centres, but in winter the ice and snow festival turns the city into a fantasy land.
The ice lanterns come from the age-old fishermen's tradition of using hollowed-out blocks of ice as lamp shades, which shielded their candles from the wind.
But as well as the cultural side of the festival, the show is also a good excuse for local people and visitors to have some fun.
