Harbin is the capital and largest city of Heilongjiang province in the northeastern region of the People's Republic of China. Holding sub-provincial administrative status, Harbin has direct jurisdiction over nine metropolitan districts, two county-level cities and seven counties. Harbin is the eighth most populous Chinese city and the most populous city in Northeast China. According to the 2010 census, the built-up area made of seven out of nine urban districts (all but Shuangcheng and Acheng not urbanized yet) had 5,282,093 inhabitants, while the total population of the sub-provincial city was up to 10,635,971.
Founded in 1898 with the coming of the Chinese Eastern Railway, the city first prospered as a region inhabited by an overwhelming majority of the immigrants from the Russian Empire.
Having the most bitterly cold winters among major Chinese cities, Harbin is heralded as the Ice City for its well-known winter tourism and recreations. Harbin is notable for its beautiful ice sculpture festival in the winter. Besides being well known for its historical Russian legacy, the city serves as an important gateway in Sino-Russian trade today, containing a sizable population of Russian diaspora. In the 1920s, the city was considered China's fashion capital since new designs from Paris and Moscow reached here first before arriving in Shanghai. The city has been voted China Top Tourist City by China National Tourism Administration in 2004. On 22 June 2010, Harbin was appointed a City of Music by the UN.
Winter culture in Harbin/China:
Located in northern Northeast China, Harbin is the northernmost among major cities in China. Under the direct influence of the Siberian Anticyclone, the average daily temperature is −19.7 °C (−3.5 °F) in winter. Annual low temperatures below −35.0 °C (−31.0 °F) are not uncommon. Nicknamed Ice City due to its freezing cold winter, Harbin is decorated by various styles of Ice and snow Sculptures from December to March every year.
The annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival has been held since 1985. Although the official start date is 5 January each year, in practice, many of the sculptures can be seen before. While there are ice sculptures throughout the city, there are two main exhibition areas: enormous snow sculptures at Sun Island (Taiyang Dao, a AAAAA-rated recreational area on the opposite side of the Songhua River from the city) and the separate Ice and Snow World that operates each night with lights switched on, illuminating the sculptures from both inside and outside. Ice and Snow World features illuminated full-size buildings made from blocks of 2–3 feet thick crystal clear ice directly taken from the Songhua River which passes through the city. The sculptures inside the exhibition ground takes 15,000 workers to work for 16 days. In early December, ice artisans cut 120,000 cubic metres (4.2 million cubic feet) of ice blocks from Songhua river's frozen surface as raw materials for the ice sculptures' show. Massive ice buildings, large-scale snow sculptures, ice slides, festival food and drinks can also be found in several parks and major avenues in the city. Winter activities in the festival include Yabuli Alpine Skiing, snow mobile driving, winter-swimming in Songhua River, and the traditional ice-lantern exhibition in Zhaolin Garden, which was first held in 1963. Snow carving and ice and snow recreations are famous nationwide, especially among Asian countries including Korea, Japan, Thailand and Singapore.
The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival is one of the four largest ice and snow festivals in the world, along with Japan's Sapporo Snow Festival, Canada's Quebec City Winter Carnival, and Norway's Holmenkollen Ski Festival.
Every November, the city of Harbin sends teams of ice artisans to the United States to promote their unique art form. It takes more than 100 artisans to create ICE!, the annual display of indoor Christmas-themed ice carvings in National Harbor, Maryland; Nashville, Tennessee; Kissimmee, Florida; and Grapevine, Texas.Wikipedia
CHINA: SWIMMING IN THE FROZEN SONGHUA RIVER
Mandarin/Nat
In China's frigid north-east most residents are huddling next to coal stoves and spending as little time in the numbing outdoors as possible.
Hibernation in winter is often thought the best approach in these northern latitudes just below Siberia.
But one intrepid group thinks just the opposite - and once again this year, their taking their exercise to the extreme.
The frozen Songhua river in mid winter may be a good place for ice skating or even ice sailing.
But swimming?
You'd have to be crazy - or a member of a very unique club.
For example - the Harbin winter swimming club.
Club members each year cut a full size swimming pool in the thick ice covering the river.
Braving temperatures lower than minus 20 degrees Celsius they take the plunge.
For some one swim a day is simply not enough, preferring a dip once in the morning and then again in the afternoon.
The swimming club was founded by 70 year old Fan Xuekun fifteen years ago and now has five hundred members.
Fan himself is adamant about the benefits of regular immersion in ice cold water.
SOUNDBITE:(Mandarin)
Cold stimulation is very good for the body. It speeds up the blood's circulation. Its like gymnastics for the blood system, it opens the blood vessels and cleans out the system. This is very good.
SUPER CAPTION: Fan Xuekun, Chairman, Harbin winter swimming club
The club's oldest member is eighty six year old Chen Pingsheng.
A member since the club's founding Chen's winter swimming has even attracted the attention of President Jiang Zemin.
Chen says this year the weather and the water are both warmer than usual - but then again, from his perspective, who really knows?
SOUNDBITE:(Mandarin)
Its not cold.
SUPER CAPTION: Chen Pingsheng, 86 year old winter swimmer
While many of the members are past middle age, a few youngsters also appear to revel in the activity.
In some cases the cold water is apparently so invigorating it even inspires them to song.
It might not be a habit that catches on with the masses - but judging by the appearance of this group, it suits them just fine.

Harbin Snow and Ice Theme Park Delights Tourists
A winter wonderland, made from ice.
The 'Ice and Snow World' is an annual tradition in Harbin, the capital of China's northern Heilongjiang province. It's the largest theme park of its kind in the world. And it's a hit with tourists.
[Tang Peixue, Tourist]:
We have never seen these things. It's really beautiful. Our classmates came here to see what the winter is like in north China.
This ice palace, and the other 2,000 artworks on display, are made from crystal clear ice taken from the local Songhua River.
[Zhou Xuan, Tourist from Hebei Province]
I have not seen so many ice-carved structures even though there's also ice in Hebei. It's my first time to enjoy these. It's brilliant.
And for those looking for a bit more action in this icy theme park more than 30 different activities are on offer, including a ride down this massive 460-foot long slide.
[Tony Guangzhong, Tourist]:
It's too fast, too thrilling. It's more thrilling than a roller coaster.
The theme park is part of the Harbin Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, which dates back to 1963. The Ice and Snow World is more recent, first opening in 1999.
The park will officially open for 2013 on Saturday January 5th.

Harbin, Heilongjiang, China 2017
A compilation of our four days in the wonderful yet outrageously cold north eastern city of Haerbin in the province of Heilongjiang, China. Home to the famous ice and snow world. The province of Heilongjiang boarders with Russian Siberia and temperatures can drop lower than −40 °C which is why it is known as the ice city. The temperature dropped to around -30°C during our stay and I have never felt cold like it in my life.

First artificial incubation of gentoo penguins in SW China
Two gentoo penguins were hatched in an aquarium, making them the first of their species to be artificially incubated in landlocked southwest China. The breeders said the penguin couple started nesting in September and laid eggs in mid-November. It usually takes some 35 days for a gentoo penguin to hatch its egg, so to increase the chances of hatching success, the breeders moved the eggs into an artificial incubation box.

Китайский поезд Харбин - Хэйхэ (Chinese train Harbin - Heihe)

There is no fast train from Harbin to Heihe, only usual train. Trips like this are always interesting. You can easily communicate with chinese people. Very often they share fruits and srtawberries with me. Some people come to the train dressed in pajamas. Some people go to bed right away. There are a variety of situations, but I always have fun on such trips.
We bought tickets via Ctrip app., it costs approximately 150 rmb. Pay attention to that there are several railway stations in Harbin.

Harbin musicians protest on the street
This morning around 70 staff members and musicians of the Heilongjiang Song and Dance Company took to the streets. They carried a banner and protested along the Central Avenue, Harbin's main pedestrian and a major sightseeing spot. They said that the Company cheated them six years ago by guaranteeing public servant social security which was removed in a matter of three days last week. It's unclear whether the protestors encoutered any law enforcement body.
