INDIAN Food with 100,000 PEOPLE at the WORLD'S BIGGEST Kitchen! Golden Temple, Amritsar, India
In my 10 years of traveling the world, few places have left as big of an impression on me than India. This is a truly beautiful and remarkable country, filled with loving, warm, and friendly people, a stunning and fascinating culture, and some of the best food anywhere on Earth. There are profound experiences to be had at nearly every turn here, and I had one of my own when I visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar with my travel buddy Sam and our new friend Deepak.

On day two of our time in Amritsar, I knew I wanted to visit the Golden Temple, also known as Darbar Sahib or Sri Harmandir Sahib. Amritsar is a holy city for those who practice the Sikh religion, and the more than 400-year-old Golden Temple is the most significant shrine for Sikhs in the world. The temple welcomes people of all faiths and walks of life. Everyone is considered equal here. It is also home to the biggest free kitchen in the world, which is open 24 hours a day! Come along with me, Sam, and Deepak as we experience the beauty and wonders of The Golden Temple!
My Film Making Kit ►
You have to wear proper attire when you go to the Golden Temple, so my first order of business was buying a shirt at a nearby shop for 700 rupees. Then I chose an orange turban. You can rent a turban here, but I decided to buy mine for 300 rupees. Getting my head wrapped was such a relaxing experience. It was almost like getting a head massage! I also bought a bracelet to complete my look. Just call me David Singh!
On our way to the temple, we passed a Jallianwala Bagh Memorial, which commemorates the thousands of victims of a mass shooting by members of the British Indian Army, which took place in Amritsar in 1919. The incident and its aftermath are considered by historians to be a decisive step toward the end of British rule in India.
Before you enter the temple, you have to take off your shoes and deposit them, and wash your hands and feet. After we were all nice and clean, we watched the queue of thousands of people lining up to enter the temple. The smog in the air partially shrouding the temple added a level of mystique to the scene before us. It was absolutely beautiful. After admiring the view, and watching people bathe in the water between us and the temple, we made our way to the langar, or kitchen, where roughly 100,000 people are served per day, with between 2,000 and 3,000 visitors dining together inside the kitchen’s two dining halls for fifteen minutes at a time.
As we walked through the kitchen, we watched people make flatbreads, saw a machine that makes roti, and witnessed the cooks preparing massive vats of dal, which contain 500kg of lentils! The aroma was so potent. I couldn’t wait to eat!
After chatting with some of my fellow diners, we were served some maa ki dal, chickpea chole, a dessert called kheer, and flatbread. The dal was so delicious and flavorful! You can tell that it’s served and made with love, as Deepak said. Here, he says, there is no rank, no caste, no color, no religion here. Everyone is treated equally, which is how I believe the world should always be. Here, volunteers clean everything, from the floors to the dishes and utensils. This place is a bastion of love and positive energy. You can feel it the moment you walk in, and I couldn’t help but get emotional after having such a beautiful experience. Come to The Golden Temple. It will change your life.
I hope you enjoyed our incredible visit to The Golden Temple. If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. And please subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already so you don’t miss out on any of my upcoming food and travel content!

The Harmandir Sahib also Darbar Sahib, and informally referred to as the Golden Temple is a prominent Sikh Gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India. It was built by the fifth Sikh guru, Guru Arjan Dev, in the 16th Century. In 1604, Guru Arjan Dev completed the Adi Granth, the holy scripture of Sikhism, and installed it in the Gurdwara.
There are four doors to get into the Harmandir Sahib, which symbolize the openness of the Sikhs towards all people and religions. The present day Gurdwara was rebuilt in 1764 by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia with the help of other Sikh Misl's. In the early nineteenth century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh secured the Punjab region from outside attack and covered the upper floors of the Gurdwara with gold, which gives it its distinctive appearance and English name the Golden Temple.
Sri Harmandir Sahib literally means The Temple of God. The fourth guru of Sikhism, Guru Ram Das ji, excavated a tank in 1577 CE which subsequently became known as Amritsar (meaning Pool of the Nectar of Immortality), giving its name to the city that grew around it. In due course, a Sikh edifice, Sri Harmandir Sahib (meaning the abode of God), rose in the middle of this tank and became the supreme centre of Sikhism. Its sanctum came to house the Adi Granth comprising compositions of Sikh Gurus and other saints considered to have Sikh values and philosophies, e.g., Baba Farid, and Kabir. The compilation of The Adi Granth was started by the fifth guru of Sikhism, Guru Arjan Dev ji.
Sri Harmandir Sahib at nig Gurdwara was surrounded by a small lake in a thin forest. The third of the six grand Mughals, Emperor Akbar, who visited the third Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Das, in the neighbouring town of Goindval, was so impressed by the way of life in the town that he gave a jagir (the land and the revenues of several villages in the vicinity) to the Guru's daughter Bhani as a gift on her marriage to Bhai Jetha, who later became the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das ji. Guru Ram Das ji enlarged the lake and built a small township around it. The town was named after Guru Ram Das ji as Guru Ka Chak', Chak Ram Das or Ram Das Pura.
During the leadership of the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev (1581--1606), the full-fledged Gurdwara was built. In December 1588, Guru Arjan Dev ji initiated the construction of the Gurdwara. The foundation stone was laid by none other than Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib himself in December 1588. It is a common misconception that the foundation stone was laid by the Sufi saint Mian Mir of Lahore.
The Gurdwara was completed in 1604. Guru Arjan Dev ji, installed the Guru Granth Sahib in it and appointed Baba Buddha Ji as the first Granthi of it on August 1604. In the mid-18th century it was attacked by the Afghans, by one of Ahmed Shah Abdali's generals, Jahan Khan, and had to be substantially rebuilt in the 1760s. However, in response a Sikh Army was sent to hunt down the Afghan force. They were under orders to show no mercy and historical evidence suggests the Sikh Army was decisively victorious in the ensuing battle. Both forces met each other five miles outside Amritsar; Jahan Khan's army was destroyed.
Operation Blue Star was commenced on 3 June 1984 and ended on 6 June 1984. The Indian Army led by General Kuldip Singh Brar brought infantry, artillery, and tanks into Sri Harmandir Sahib to arrest Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Sri Harmandir Sahib complex and some of the surrounding houses were fortified. The Statesman reported on 4 July that light machine-guns and sophisticated self-loading rifles were known to have been brought into the compound.
Indira Gandhi ordered the army to launch Operation Blue Star. Within six months, Indira Gandhi's Sikh bodyguards killed her (31 October 1984) for the perceived sacrilege.
Fierce fighting ensued between Bhindranwale's supporters and the soldiers, in which many of Bhindranwale's supporters were killed along with many soldiers. An official account tallies the deaths of 83 soldiers and 492 civilians killed by the army Sri Harmandir Sahib complex also suffered much damage due to the fighting, especially the holy Sri Akal Takhat Sahib.
Many Sikhs regarded the attack as a desecration of their holiest shrine and discrimination of a minority.
In 1986, the repairs performed on the holy Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, which the Rajiv Gandhi Government had undertaken without consultation, were removed. A new Sri Akal Takhat Sahib was completed in 1999 by Kar Sevaks.

Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib ) Amritsar, India
The Golden Temple Amritsar India (Sri Harimandir Sahib Amritsar) is not only a central religious place of the Sikhs, but also a symbol of human brotherhood and equality. Everybody, irrespective of cast, creed or race can seek spiritual solace and religious fulfilment without any hindrance. It also represents the distinct identity, glory and heritage of the Sikhs. To pen-down the philosophy, ideology, the inner and outer beauty, as well as the historical legacy of Sri Harimandir Sahib is a momentous task. It is a matter of experience rather than a of description.
As advised by Sri Guru Amar Dass Ji (3rd Sikh Guru), Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji (4th Sikh Guru) started the digging of Amrit Sarovar (Holy Tank) of Sri Harmandir Sahib in 1577 A.D., which was later on brick-lined by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji (5th Sikh Guru) on December 15, 1588 and He also started the construction of Sri Harimandir Sahib. Sri Guru Granth Sahib (scripture of the Sikhs), after its compilation, was first installed at Sri Harimandir Sahib on August 16, 1604 A.D. A devout Sikh, Baba Budha Ji was appointed its first Head Priest.
The Golden Temple Amritsar India (Sri Harmandir Sahib Amritsar) has a unique Sikh architecture. Built at a level lower than the surrounding land level, The Gurudwara teaches the lesson of egalitarianism and humility. The four entrances of this holy shrine from all four directions, signify that people belonging to every walk of life are equally welcome.

The Golden Temple, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib is a Gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India.
It is the holiest Gurdwara and the most important pilgrimage site of Sikhism.
The temple is built around a man-made pool (sarovar) that was completed by Guru Ram Das in 1577.
Guru Arjan – the fifth Guru of Sikhism, requested Sai Mian Mir – a Muslim Pir of Lahore to lay its foundation stone in 1589.
In 1604, Guru Arjan placed a copy of the Adi Granth in Harmandir Sahib, calling the site Ath Sath Tirath (lit. shrine of 68 pilgrimages).
The temple was repeatedly rebuilt by the Sikhs after it became a target of persecution and was destroyed several times by the Muslim armies from Afghanistan
and the Mughal Empire.
The army led by Ahmad Shah Abdali, for example, demolished it in 1757 and again in 1762, then filled the pool with garbage.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire, rebuilt it in marble and copper in 1809, overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830.
This has led to the name the Golden Temple
The temple is spiritually the most significant shrine in Sikhism.
It became a center of the Singh Sabha Movement between 1883 and 1920s.
In the early 1980s, the temple became a center of conflict between the Indian government led by Indira Gandhi, some Sikh groups and
a militant movement led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale seeking to create a new nation named Khalistan.
In 1984, Gandhi sent in the Indian Army as part of Operation Blue Star, leading to deaths of over 1,000 militants, soldiers and civilians,
as well as causing much damage to the temple and the destruction of Akal Takht.
The temple complex was rebuilt again after the 1984 damage.
The Harmandir Sahib is an open boat of worship for all men and women, from all walks of life and faith.
It has a square plan with four entrances, has a circumambulation path around the pool.
The temple is a collection of buildings around the sanctum and the pool.
One of these is Akal Takht, the chief center of religious authority of Sikhism.
Additional buildings include a clock tower, the offices of Gurdwara Committee, a Museum
and a langar – a free Sikh community run kitchen that serves a simple vegetarian meal to all visitors without discrimination.
Over 100,000 people visit the holy shrine daily for worship.
The temple complex has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its application is pending on the tentative list of UNESCO.
