France - Nice (Place Masséna)
Nice - Place Masséna
walking around the sun fountain in Nice “Fontaine du Soleil” Place Massema
at Place Massena - There are 5 bronze sculptures in the basin and in the centre stands an impressive marble Apollo. He is 7 meters (23 feet) tall and weighs in at 7 tons.
nicknamed – “the 4 horsepower statue”
Due to the nude sculpture, some conservative inhabitants of the city thought that his “manhood” was too large, while some older ladies thought it was too small, and college students took to decorating it as a prank.
Alfred Janniot is the sculptor who created the Sun Fountain. He also did some bas reliefs on the War Monument in Nice.
The 5 bronze sculptures in the fountain represent: Earth, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, and Venus.
Janniot had finished the bronzes but had not started on Apollo when the Second World War broke out. They were buried in a garden to keep them from being destroyed during the war and then dug up afterward.
Apollo was at the stadium Charles Ehrmann for about 30 years.
Gentilz Galans - (Hayne van Ghizeghem)
A charming new piece by Hayne from our current program of chansons that might have been performed before Charles the Bold during the siege of Neuss in 1475. The text of Gentilz Galans serves as a sort of model of the courtly love ideal; Hayne instructs us that a truly chivalrous knight is gentle, gallant, good-spirited, and always serves his lady with a true and honest heart.
Asteria (Sylvia Rhyne, soprano, and Eric Redlinger, lute and tenor) is an American medieval and renaissance ensemble known for their intimate, gracious performance style and the emotional immediacy of their interpretations of French medieval and renaissance music.

[new version] De tous biens plaine: 3 variations on a Renaissance hit (c.1470-1500)
De tous biens plaine (3 variations on a theme)
0:06 Original song for 3 voices by van Ghizeghem (verses 1 & 3)
3:22 Instrumental variation for 3 by Alexander Agricola
4:54 Instrumental variation for 4 by Josquin des Prez
PROGRAM NOTES:
The rondeau De tous biens plaine by the Franco-Flemish composer Hayne van Ghizeghem was perhaps the most widely parodied song of the late French Medieval period with no fewer than 28 different variations conceived over 4 decades. They included secular songs, mass movements and virtuoso instrumental duos and trios. Written before 1470, it is a surprisingly modern sounding piece of part writing that has both memorable cantus and tenor lines. Its popularity of the original chanson has been confirmed by the more than 20 copies that have survived in numerous chansonniers across France, Italy and Spain. In this performance, I arranged the original rondeau by Hayne for 3 males voices using the Vocaloid software with the MAIKA and BRUNO voice bank modules. I downloaded the untexted MIDI files from the Aeolian Consort's Japanese website and transposed the piece down one octave from 4' recorders to 8' pitch so it would better suit the range of male voices. In this version [3.0], I sped up the tempo significantly and added the 3rd verse. In order to avoid excessive length of performance, I did not include the repeats or the 2nd verse.
In the 1st instrumental variation, I used the synthesized sounds of recorder, harp and vielle to re-create Agricola's wildly virtuosic arrangement based only on the tenor part of the original song. Alexander Agricola alone wrote at least 4 parodies based on this theme, each very different from the next.
In the 2nd instrumental variation, I transposed the notes one step up (from F minor to G minor) to match the key of the other two pieces in this video. I then applied the sounds of loud instruments (2 shawms & 2 trombones) to emulate Josquin des Prez's cover song. In Josquin's version, the two upper voices were lifted note for note from Hayne's original, but the two lower parts formed an original canon for 2 instruments, played just one note apart. It might remind the listener of the famed Gloria ad modum tubae by Guillaume Dufay in which the lower 2 voices singing in canon mimick the sounds of blaring trumpets.
French Text:
De tous biens plaine est ma maistresse
Chascun lui doit tribut d'onneur;
Car assouvye est en valeur
Autant que jamais fut deesse.
Translation (from David Munrow):
My mistress possesses every virtue.
Everybody pays her homage,
for she is as full of worth
as ever any goddess was.

Ottaviano Petrucci was the first publisher of printed music in all of Europe. He had reconfigured Gutenberg's movable type technology with the intent to mass produce musical scores. His meticulously indexed compilation of secular music was titled Harmonice Musices Odhecaton (Canti A, B and C). It gave future generations of performers and musicologists straightforward, legible copies of more than 200 masterpieces by some of the greatest composers of his generation. Some scholars believe that the the Odhecaton was intended for use by instrumentalists given the absence of lyrics beneath the lines of musical notation. Afterall, Petrucci knew very well how to match words of a song to their corresponding notes. For example, the Josquin piece In te Domine, speravi, from a different Petrucci compilcation Frottole Libro Primo does include the lyrics associated with the melody line (see example).
For the soundtrack in this video, I selected representative works by Josquin Desprez, Jacob Obrecht, Pierre de la Rue, Gerard Weerbecke and others. Like other videos on my Youtube channel, all the musical clips are MIDI files downloaded from different websites. I edited each MIDI file to emulate the sound and feel of a period performance. The raw MIDI files were downloaded from Aeolian Consort's website on geocities.co.jp and edited using the iPhone app MusicStudio2.
Most of the artwork featured in this video comes from the period between 1470 and 1510. A handful are products of early 15th century artists. They can be roughly divided into 4 categories:
1. Facsimile printed scores from Petrucci's 1503 and 1504 editions of Harmonice Musices Odhecaton Canti A and Canti B.
2. Portraits of the composers (Desprez, Obrecht and de la Rue) as well as of their patron Duke Ercole I of Ferrara and his daughter.
3. Large scale Italian Renaissance paintings and frescos containing iconography of angels (and people) with their respective instruments.
4. Late 15th century illuminated manuscripts from France and Burgundy containing scenes of nobles dancing or otherwise enjoying a live musical performance.

France Nice, Le Chateau (Castel Hill) Downhill
Le Chateau, the shaded hill and park at the eastern end of Quai des États-Unis, is named after a 12th-century château that was razed by Louis XIV in a fit of pique in 1706 and never rebuilt. There are some ruins but not really a chateau to speak of. In the one remaining tower, the 16th century Tour Bellanda, is the Musée Naval. The cemetery where Garibaldi is buried covers the northwest of the park.
From this 300 ft (92 m) hilltop park aslo known as Castel Hill, the glittering views of Vieux Nice spires and the Baie des Anges are mesmerizing. It's worth the walk up - especially as you pass waterfalls, pools and gardens along the way. Once at the top, sit and have a coffee under the trees; the cafe offerings are very much kiosk style but the view makes up for everything.
