Safari in the Ngorongoro (Tanzania)
(EN) The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a conservation area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District. The Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera, lies within the area. A population of approximately 25,000 large animals, largely ungulates along with reputedly the highest density of mammalian predators in Africa, lives in the crater. Large animals in the crater include the black rhinoceros, the local population of which declined from about 108 in 1964-66 to between 11-14 in 1995, and the hippopotamus, which is very uncommon in the area. There also are many other ungulates: the wildebeest (7,000 estimated in 1994), the zebra (4,000), the eland, and Grant's and Thompson's gazelles (3,000).
The crater has the densest known population of lions, numbering 62 in 2001. On the crater rim are leopards, elephants - numbering 42 in 1987 but only 29 in 1992 - mountain reedbuck, and buffalo (4,000 in 1994).
However, since the 1980s the crater's wildebeest population has fallen by a quarter to about 19,000 and the numbers of eland and Thomson's gazelle also have declined while the buffalo population has increased greatly, probably due to the long prevention of fire which favors high-fibrous grasses over shorter, less fibrous types.
In summer, enormous numbers of Serengeti migrants pass through the plains of the reserve, including 1.7 million wildebeest, 260,000 zebra, and 470,000 gazelles. Waterbuck occur mainly near Lerai Forest; servals occur widely in the crater and on the plains to the west. Common in the reserve are lions, hartebeest, spotted hyenas and jackals. Cheetahs, although common in the reserve, are scarce in the crater itself. The African Wild Dog has recently[when?] disappeared from the crater and may have declined elsewhere in the Conservation Area as well, as well as throughout Tanzania according to C. Michael Hogan.

Tanzania June/July Great Migration safari
This June/July explore the great wildebeest migration from the view of Tanzania’s most popular destinations - Arusha, Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the Central Serengeti.
Located just a few hours drive from the town of Arusha, Tarangire is a popular stop for safaris travelling through the northern circuit on their way to the Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
After the Serengeti, Tarangire has the greatest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania and in the dry season, the Tarangire River is a magnet for thirsty wildlife. Tarangire is known for its spectacular baobab trees and its breathtaking views of the Maasai Steppe as well as the mountains to the south. Highlights will be spotting large herds of elephant and the migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest, eland and various predators.
The Ngorongoro Crater offers views of large herds of zebra and wildebeest during the migration season, as well as lion, leopard, elephant and black rhino.
Together with Kenya's Masai Mara Game Park, the Serengeti forms part of Africa’s most famous wildlife park. The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara is the largest movement of land mammals on the planet - with more than a million animals following the rains. Aside from traditional vehicle safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Serengeti plains has become almost essential and you can even do a horseback safari.

TANZANIA | cinematic travel video ???????? wildlife and cultural
Tanzania, Africa, wildlife and cultural safari cinematic travel video.
We used Tanzania Adventure as our safari guide, and timed our visit to catch the great migration of wildebeest in the Southern Serengeti. We witnessed over one-million wildebeest and six-hundred-thousand zebra at Maswa Game Reserve just South of Serengeti National Park. And during the wet season, they're allowed to drive off-road, which got us a lot closer to wildlife than we could have ever possibly hoped!

We flew KLM airlines to Kilimanjaro International Airport. A few days were spent relaxing at Kiboko Lodge before our safari, exploring Arusha National Park, making our own coffee at Tengeru Coffee Tour, and visiting the Watoto Foundation for street boys.
Along with the over abundance of wildlife, we danced with the Masai, witnessed blacksmithing, maze grinding and singing with the Datoga, and went bush hunting with the Hadzabe tribes as well. We saw dozens of species, including the Big Five - lions, elephants, cape buffalos, leopards, and a black rhinoceros. We also witnessed a cheetah kill, saw dozens of giraffe, and spotted one of my personal favorites - black and white colobus monkeys!
We did the Northern Circuit. It included Arusha National Park, the Serengeti, Maswa Game Reserve, Ngorongoro Crater, and visits with the Masai, Datoga and Hadzabe tribes near Lake Eyasi.
Footage includes the Masai, Datoga and Hadzabe tribes, African elephants, zebra, wildebeest, topi, hartebeest, waterbuck, banded mongoose, spotted hyena, grey crowned crane, jackal, secretary bird, baboon, cape buffalo, Mapito Tented Camp ( and a lioness.

Kenya, Cycling to Hell's Gate National Park, Episode 85
This is a National Park that we ride our bicycles through to reach the volcanic gorge that houses Hell's Gate! Sure you can drive a car and sure it is a small park, but how often can you cycle (or walk, or rock climb) in a wildlife park? Should I call this Cycling with the Zebras? The animals were cool up close and personal and the gorge was a bit tight, all in all it was fun.

This is a summary post about how to Overland Africa independently. Ben had an old Toyota 4WD Land Cruiser sitting in Arusha available (but a rental will do just as well) and I was available. We made up the route as we went; we camped in lodges ($10 per night if you have a tent) or free-camped along the way.
Hell's Gate National Park Video Details
The next morning I rented a bicycle and headed for Hell’s Gate National Park that straddles the Rift Valley. Park entrance fees are small by African park standards for foreigners ($20). And yes, they take US $.
Hell's Gate National Park is named after a narrow break in the gorge cliffs, once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley. It was established in 1984. It’s a small national park but is known for its wide variety of wildlife and for its scenery. This includes the Fischer's Tower and Central Tower columns and Hell's Gate Gorge.
We cycled around the park on gravel roads (or in the fields with the wild animals), and even walked around for a while. Wildlife in the park is varied and includes African buffalos, zebras, elands, hartebeests, Thomson’s gazelles, baboons and over 100 bird species including vultures, Verreaux’s eagles, augur buzzards and swifts. Rare lammergeier vultures, as well as the Chandler’s mountain reedbuck and the klipspringer antelope can be spotted on rare occasions. We then settled down to watch a pair of rock climbers before heading to the park check post at the rim of the gorge. We locked our bikes to a tree and then registered with the ranger before entering the gorge.
In the gorge we noticed soldiers on patrol, always a good sign (not). Well-marked exits in case of flash floods were an interesting feature of the gorge. Free therapeutic mud baths were abundant. Free hot water included. The animals in the park shared its space with three geothermal power stations (they are using the earth’s volcanic activities to make electricity.
As we got closer to Hell’s Gate the gorge got narrower. I wondered what lies behind the bolder & what if it collapses? It’s a tight fit and not a place I want to be if it starts to rain. We back peddled (literally) out of the park late in the day.
