Hatcher Pass is one of the best places to visit in Alaska...hands down! It's beautiful year-round, and there's so much to love. Plus, Hatcher Pass is only 15 miles from the easily-accessible Mat-Su Valley, just 45 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska.

Hatcher Pass (3886 ft./1148 m.) is a mountain pass through the southwest part of the Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska. It is named after Robert Hatcher, a prospector and miner. The nearest incorporated communities are Palmer and Wasilla approximately 12 miles (19 km) to the south, and Willow approximately 26 miles (42 km) to the west. The communities are at an elevation of approximately 250 feet (76 m) in the Mat-Su valley. For more info, visit this link:

Hatcher Pass Lodge and Cafe Alaska 4K UHD
We stopped at the Hatcher Pass Lodge and Cafe while in Palmer Alaska. It was scenic there but the lodges looked abandoned. The kitchen in the Cafe was closed due to a lack of visitors but they served drinks or coffee. There are far better lodging options if you want to closer to nature such as the Knik River Lodges in Palmer. We didn't see too many cars go by either. It was probably still too early in the season for this elevation.

Hatcher Pass, Top 100 Drives in the USA
One of the top scenic drives in the United States of America is Hatcher Pass, from Wasilla to Willow. Typically the pass opens the weekend before July 4. It is closed until July 4 or so typically due to snow and wet road conditions that would deteriorate the road quickly. The road goes from The Matanuska-Susitna Valley up to Independence Mine then all the way through the steep narrow pass to quaint Willow, Alaska. The entire drive is about 50 miles one way.

Hatcher Pass is a mountain pass in Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska.
I took this video with my DJI mavic Pro during my Alaska road trip in August 2017. The place is located only 12 miles south of Wasilla, and it is a fairly easy drive up the mountain.

Driving from Palmer to Willow Alaska via the Hatcher Pass Road (technically starting out on the Palmer Fishhook Road, Hatcher Pass Road and then the Willow Fishhook Road) on October 1st 2017.

Hatcher Pass Alaska
We went to Alaska on vacation in July of 2018 and visited Hatcher Pass. Took some drone footage with my Hero Black 6 Karma drone at Summit Lake and some handheld footage from the parking lot at the entrance to Independence Mine. There's a lodge at the entrance to the area where we sat and warmed up after sightseeing on this cold August day.
