Shenandoah National Park, Luray, Virginia, USA - Hawksbill Summit Hike - Winter
Hawksbill Mountain is a mountain with an elevation of 4,050 feet (1,230 m). Marking the border between Madison County and Page County in Virginia, the summit of Hawksbill Mountain is the highest point in Shenandoah National Park, as well as the highest point in both Madison and Page counties.
The north face of Hawksbill Peak is a 2,500-foot (760 m) drop into Timber Hollow, which is the largest elevation change in the park. The summit is one of the few places in Shenandoah National Park where one can find balsam fir, a tree more typical of northern New England and southeast Canada. Red spruce was once found near the summit but the last of the trees died out over 20 years ago.
The National Park Service has constructed a stone observation platform at the summit. Byrd's Nest No. 2, one of a series of shelters built in the park by Senator Harry Byrd, is nearby. Hawskbill peak is also the site of a peregrine falcon restoration project. The summit of Hawksbill Mountain can be reached by a short hike from a trailhead located at the Upper Hawksbill parking area, just off of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. A number of other hiking trails lead to the summit of Hawksbill, while the Appalachian Trail goes around and about 500 ft (150 m) in elevation below the summit. (Wikipedia)

4 Essential Stops in SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK [4K]
in this video, I talk about my 4 favorite things to do in Shenandoah National Park, VA. This beautiful national park lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, about 75 miles west of Washington DC. The park is over a hundred miles long and as you could imagine, there are countless activities to do within this park.
This video was taken in the end of April, so you can really see which trees have leaves and which do not. As we hiked or drove down from Skyline drive, even just 900 feet would be enough to completely transform.
Additional Notes:

One of the few national parks on the east coast
Established in 1935
Home to the famous SKYLINE DRIVE which is 105 miles long
Virginial mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the Appalachian mountain range), just 75 mi outside of Washington DC,
Land acquired through eminent domain. There is a long story there including claims of embellished claims local inbreeding
Parts of the park was used to train troops for WW2
5 campgrounds (some are first come first serve, and others allow reservations when in season)

9 major waterfalls to hike in and see – tallest one is 91 ft, but there are countless smaller ones along every creek
ROSE RIVER FALLS TRAIL / DARK HOLLOW FALLS:
Start at mile 49.4

Hike clockwise to go down the rocky side (relatively easy) and then up the gradual fire road
You will also see Dark Hollow falls at the bottom and you can optionally add a quarter mile to hike up that waterfall
Cemetery on the way back
SKYLINE DRIVE
105 miles long, spanning the entire park
More than 75 overlook
Countless overlooks and pull offs to get the best view on the east or west side.
I recommend stopping at these all day to see amazing views, at sunrise, at sunset, and pull over to take a look at the stars at night
HAWKSBILL SUMMIT – start on Skyline drive pull off mile 45.5
1.7 mi round trip – which means you go up 520 ft
Very rapid ascent
Birds nest 2 – you can see Old Rag Mountain on your right
OLD RAG MOUNTAIN
You need to drive out of the park to get here
This does still require the park entrance fee, so be sure to stop and pay, or show them your pass
7.5 hrs (we did it in 6)
2380 ft elevation gain
Very strenuous – includes rock scrambling
9.2 mile circuit
Birds Nest 1 resides here – and you can see Hawksbill from the summit

Linville Gorge | Hawksbill Mountain
Hawksbill mountain lies along the east rim of Linville Gorge (known as the Grand Canyon of the East) in North Carolina. The summit provides wonderful 360 degree views of the surrounding Appalachian mountains, including the Black Mountains that can be seen to the southwest! We completed this hike in late October during the peak of the fall color season and were convinced this might be the most scenic viewpoint in the state of North Carolina!

Our advice:
The trail is accessed from Table Rock Road and gains about 650 feet over the mile and some change to the summit. The views at the top are well worth the climb!

Me and my daughter meet up with Tony Glenn and he takes us up to Hawksbill Mountain Trail. We'd never been before so this was exciting to go to a new place. The hike was awesome with an amazing scenery. I used my GoPro Hero4 and my SJ5000 to record our hike. Still shots are from my Canon Rebel camera.

Shenandoah National Park encompasses a massive 200,000 acres of protected land in the US state of Virginia. It is a very long thin park and includes part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, including Hawksbill Mountain, the highest peak in the park. These mountains are relatively short compared to their Western cousins with Hawksbill topping out at 4,050 feet (1,230 M). Known for its scenic Skyline Drive and epic fall colors Shenandoah is a haven from the hustle and bustle of the thriving cities of the East United States. It is located only 75 miles for the Nation's Capital City Washington DC. Shenandoah was not an easy park to create, and suffered with a long and conflicted inception. It is hard to argue today though that it wasn't a great idea. With it's wooded hollows, cascading waterfalls, and thriving wildlife, Shenandoah is a national treasure.
Shenandoah has over 500 miles of hiking trails in the park including over 100 miles of the famous Appalachian trail. The park's hikes are divided into 3 areas, the North District, the Central District, and the Southern District and range from easy day hikes to long back country excursions. Whatever your pace. Shenandoah has a hike for you.

Hawksbill Summit trail, the highest elevation in Shenandoah National Park 4,040 feet. This hike started right at the base of Skyline Drive 1.8 miles out and in and went straight up. Advice: stretch before you start this hike - there is no warm up time it's straight up all the way to the top! There is a longer trail option at the start to the right of this trail that is a much easier climb if you choose to take that option. Great views! There are 2 overlook areas. There is a shelter with a picnic table at the summit. Highly recommend this hike as it is short and gets you to a summit quickly. I combined this hike and White Oak Canyon in the same day, just a 1/10 of a mile up Skyline Drive from here or you can just walk right across the parking lot and take the Cedar Trail to White Oak Canyon, but that does make the trek much longer for that hike.

American National Park Shenandoah | Shenandoah National Park | Blue Ridge Mountains U.S. Virginia
Shenandoah National Park is a national park that encompasses part of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the U.S. state of Virginia.
The park is long and narrow, with the broad Shenandoah River and Valley on the west side, and the rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont on the east.
Although the scenic Skyline Drive is likely the most prominent feature of the park, almost 40% of the land area 79,579 acres has been designated as wilderness and is protected as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
The highest peak is Hawksbill Mountain at 4,051 feet .
The park encompasses parts of eight counties.
On the west side of Skyline Drive they are, from northeast to southwest, Warren, Page, Rockingham, and Augusta counties.
On the east side of Skyline Drive they are Rappahannock, Madison, Greene, and Albemarle counties.
The park stretches for 105 miles along Skyline Drive from near the town of Front Royal in the northeast to near the city of Waynesboro in the southwest.
The park headquarters are located in Luray.
Shenandoah National Park lies along the Blue Ridge Mountains in north-central Virginia.
These mountains form a distinct highland rising to elevations above 4,000 feet .
Local topographic relief between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley exceeds 3,000 feet at some locations.
The crest of the range divides the Shenandoah River drainage basin, part of the Potomac River drainage, on the west side, from the James and Rappahannock River drainage basins on the east side
Some of the rocks exposed in the park date to over one billion years in age, making them among the oldest in Virginia.
Bedrock in the park includes Grenville-age granitic basement rocks and a cover sequence of metamorphosed Neoproterozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Swift Run and Catoctin formations.
Columns of Catoctin Formation metamorphosed basalt can be seen at Compton Peak.
Clastic rocks of the Chilhowee Group are of early Cambrian age .
Quaternary surficial deposits are common and cover much of the bedrock throughout the park
The park is located along the western part of the Blue Ridge anticlinorium, a regional-scale Paleozoic structure at the eastern margin of the Appalachian fold and thrust belt.
Rocks within the park were folded, faulted, distorted, and metamorphosed during the late Paleozoic Alleghanian orogeny .
The rugged topography of Blue Ridge Mountains is a result of differential erosion during the Cenozoic, although some post-Paleozoic tectonic activity occurred in the region.
Legislation to create a national park in the Appalachian mountains was first introduced by freshman Virginia congressman Henry D. Flood in 1901, but despite the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, failed to pass.
The first national park was Yellowstone, in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.
It was signed into law in 1872.
Yosemite National Park was created in 1890.
When Congress created the National Park Service in 1916, additional parks had maintained the western pattern .
Grand Canyon, Zion and Acadia were all created in 1919 during the administration of Virginia-born president Woodrow Wilson.
Acadia finally broke the western mold, becoming the first eastern national park.
It was also based on donations from wealthy private landowners.
Stephen Mather, the first NPS director, saw a need for a national park in the southern states, and solicited proposals in his 1923 year-end report.
In May 1925, Congress and President Calvin Coolidge authorized the NPS to acquire a minimum of 250,000 acres and a maximum of 521,000 acres to form Shenandoah National Park, and also authorized creation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
However, the legislation also required that no federal funds would be used to acquire the land.
Thus, Virginia needed to raise private funds, and could also authorize state funds and use its eminent domain power to acquire the land to create Shenandoah National Park.
Virginia's Democratic gubernatorial candidate , Harry F. Byrd supported creation of Shenandoah National Park, as did his friend William E. Carson, a businessman who had become Virginia's first chairman of the Commission on Conservation and Development.
Development of the western national parks had assisted tourism, which produced jobs, which Byrd and local politicians supported.

OLD RAG MOUNTAIN in Under 3 Minutes - Shenandoah National Park
Old Rag Mountain in Under 3 Minutes, Shenandoah National Park
Old Rag is Shenandoah's most popular and most dangerous hike. It is listed as very strenuous. It is a 9.2-mile loop with about 2,400ft elevation gain. We hiked it in just over 5 hours, but that is highly dependent on your pace, physical fitness and how many people you run into on the trail.
The summit provided 360 degree panoramic views. There are several large boulders you can climb to get a great view of the valley.
