Abalone Ranching South Africa
Abalone or Perlemoen as it is locally known in South Africa have been targeted and heavily exploited by highly organised poaching groups. The very high market prices and high demand has fuelled this trade!
Abalone Ranching is a relatively new concept in South Africa, which has the potential to rejuvenate abalone stocks while creating a sustainable fishery. It can be seen as a promising alternative fisheries management approach. So far current management initiatives have failed to protect this resource. Abalone Ranching uses abalone reared on land based hatchery systems, which is then subsequently reintroduced into the wild in areas that have previously been devastated by poaching. It is said that some of these hard hit areas may never recover without intervention!
Abalone ranching aims to rebuild the stock and increase the recruitment (babies) of abalone. Various areas along the coastline have been designated for ranching activities; the resource is privatised giving incentive to owners to seed abalone in those areas and provide necessary security to protect the abalone. The video shows the beginning process of 'experimental seeding' which aims to test survival & growth of abalone using different abalone sizes and densities in two habitats. The 'commercial seeding' is experiments performed on a large scale that will advise on the viability of these operations i.e. are enough abalone surviving to continue this process?
My name is Warren Witte, a marine scientist, tasked with understanding and exploring abalone seeding and the potential that this may have in creating a new sustainable fishery in South Africa.
