Heian-jingu temple and gardens, Kyoto, Japan travel video
Arriving at Heian-jingo in Kyoto, Japan. This is actually one of the newer temples in Kyoto, built at the end of the 19th century, and of course built in a very traditional style. This kind of architecture really dates back 300, 400 or even 500 years.
This reproduction of an Imperial Palace was constructed in 1895, complete with shrines and a vast garden complex with ponds, islands and Chinese-Japanese-style landscaping.
And it’s a very large temple complex with some beautiful gardens out in the back.
There are always well-tended paths through the gardens
Notice all of the colors in the trees. We were quite fortunate to be catching the tail end of the fall season. Even though it's the first week of December the weather was fairly moderate, and generally the colors do linger into the early part of December.
Often you have a pond or several ponds like this with pretty reflections of the vegetation.
The temples have wonderful wooden architecture, and yet the gardens all around, probably is even more of an interesting attraction than the buildings themselves.
One reason this grand temple and gardens were created in the late 19th century was in reaction to Kyoto being replaced as the capital of Japan, by Tokyo. For 1000 years Kyoto had been the capital of the country and when the capital was moved to Tokyo in 1868 it caused some decline in the prosperity and mood of the city and this temple was constructed 30 years later as a response of the city to revitalize.
The garden all around the pond is 30,000 square meters in size and divided in four sections with a variety of birds such as kingfishers and large falcons.
Here's a gardener out in a boat reaching some of the areas that are on islands in the middle of the pond.
Afterwards you might take a walk through the public park in front towards the huge metal torii – biggest in town – and consider a visit to the National Museum of Modern Art, with its large collection of paintings and ceramics. The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is just behind.
Heian Shrine - Kyoto
The first time we were in Japan we visited this wonderful sanctuary. One of the most important Shinto shrines of Japan located in the magical Kyoto.
HEIAN JINGU // 平安神宮 (Kyoto, Japan)
As the former capital of Japan for over a thousand years, Kyoto is a beautiful city and prefecture rich with culture and history. This was my first visit to the Heian Shrine and I fell in love with the place. The architecture is absolutely gorgeous and the surrounding Shin'en Garden is beautiful too. Definitely recommend this one!

Kyoto Festival: Bad Luck Exorcism at Heian Shrine (Setsubun-sai)
Setsubun, the day before spring, is celebrated on February 3rd each year. Heian Shrine is one of many sites in Kyoto that holds an event on this day. The festival begins in the inner sanctum, where priests perform rites. A recreation of the Heian period Daina no Gi ritual is held in the courtyard. This ritual was held at the Imperial Palace to cleanse misfortune. The ritual begins with an invocation before the altars. A warrior fires arrows in the cardinal directions to erect a sacred barrier. Another warrior symbolically cuts bad ties with a sword. Hōsōshi the demon queller leads a procession around the courtyard. Oni (demons/ogres) represent the misfortune people are trying to cleanse. A troupe of oni appear to make an assault on the shrine. At the Daigokuden stage, the oni perform the Oni no Mai dance. Shrine parishioners throw roasted soybeans to chase the oni out. They chant oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi (bad luck out, good luck in). Crowds gather in the hopes of catching a pack of lucky beans. Some people eat the beans or use them at home to celebrate Setsubun. A few local maiko and geiko also help with the mamemaki (bean throwing). The last part of the ceremony is an ohitaki shinji fire ritual. Priests toss hitakigushi (sticks with prayers written on them) into the fire. Priests read a Shinto prayer to conclude the Heian Shrine Setsubun-sai.

Heian Shrine in Cherry Blossom Season, Kyoto - 平安神宮●京都 - Japan As It Truly Is

At an industrial exposition fair, Japan decided to recreate the old Heian Palace, but it was done at a 5/8 scale. It was burned down in 1976 but rebuilt within 3 years, and now offers an expansive and beautiful place to catch a glimpse of old Japan.
Heian Shrine is open 6 AM-5:30 PM (earlier in winter months). Free of charge.

Heian Jingu Shrine (平安神宮) was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the city of Kyoto and dedicated to two famous Japanese Emperors - Kammu, the founder of Kyoto and Komei the last emperor to live in the city.
The shrine is a must see for all visitors of Kyoto City because firstly it is a magnificent shrine to visit, second it is very accessible. In addition to that most of Kyoto City's other famous landmarks like the Museum of Modern Art and the Kyoto Zoo are located close by. You can easily spend a whole day around the Shrine and these other institutions, when you visit. It is also easy to get back to your hotel or place of stay, since it is in the middle of the city.
What you see from a distance is the bright red Tori (Gate) which is fairly massive. Then the Main Gate and the Shrine and the buildings on both sides of the Shrine are magnificent. Nice white gravel covered temple grounds and the garden in the back of the Shrine are a treat to walk around.
Hope you get a chance to visit and enjoy this Shrine. Enjoy!

The Heian Shrine (Heian Jingu) is a major Shinto shrine in Kyoto, and is popular not only as a tourist spot but also as a religious and historical center. It is notable for its huge torii gates and beautiful gardens. It was given the top rank of Shinto shrines.
In comparison to other historical venues in and around Kyoto, the Heian Shrine is relatively modern. Its story, however, goes back a long way. Emperor Kammu took the throne as the 50th Emperor of Japan in the year 781, and became dissatisfied with the then-capital of Heijo (in present-day Nara). He moved the capital to today's Kyoto, or what was then known as Heian-kyo, and the Heian Imperial Palace Daidairi was constructed. This marked the beginning of the Heian period of Japanese history, which lasted from 794 to 1185.

Heian Shrine Shin-en Garden, Kyoto in 4K - 平安神宮神苑 - Japan As It Truly Is
Heian Shrine has one of Kyoto's very best gardens - like a cruscendo its beauty keeps building and they save the best for last.
Heian Shrine (平安神宮 or Heian Jingu) is a very popular sight in Kyoto, and actually one that is free to visit. Many walk around the spacious grounds, yet very few discover the treasure chest kept behind it all - a stunning garden (Shin-en, or 平安神宮神苑) with many ponds, streams, and the Taihei Kaku, one of Japan's longest and most beautiful covered bridges, built in 1912. One of the best times to visit is in April during the cherry blossom season.
The shin-en garden of Heian Jingu is about 33060 sq. meters and was created over 20 years.
Anyone who is a fan of the film Lost in Translation will instantly recognize the Garyu Kyo or stone step bridge that Scarlett Johansson walked across at one of the ponds.
The Heian Shrine Garden is:
Open: 8:30 AM to 5 PM from Mar 1-14 and October.
Open: 8:30-5:30 Mar 15-Sep 30
Open: 8:30-4:30 Nov-Feb
For complete info, their website is:
The Heian Garden entrance fee is ¥600, and can be seen leisurely in 45 minutes. The entrance is not well publicized - there's a large sign in Chinese characters, but not in the roman alphabet - you need to go all the way to the main shrine area and go left to the entrance. Look for 神苑, or Shin-en.

Heian shrine Weeping cherry blossoms in Kyoto
In 1895 Heian-jingu was built in commemoration of the 1100th anniversary of the foundation of Heian Capital.
At that time people in Kyoto was very sad, because the emperor moved to Tokyo from here.
So they established this shrine to encourage themselves.
The buildings are a partial replica of the Imperial Palace of the Heian Period (794-1185). The vermillion-lacquered Otenmon Gate and Daigoku-den (main hall) are especially beautiful.
The gardens are representative of Meiji Period garden design, and have a rich variety of flowers that change with the four seasons.
Admission is free but there is a small fee for entrance to the gardens, which are home to several beautiful weeping cherry trees which are in bloom during the spring months.
