Ep7: Wine of the Week - 2015 Helm Classic Riesling
Ken Helm is one of the most iconic names in all Australian Riesling. Considered “Canberra’s best producer of riesling” by James Halliday he was one of the pioneers for this variety in the region and has been one of the big players in the cool climate wine revolution.
In Ken’s opinion, Riesling is “The Queen of Grapes” and as such his range includes five different takes on the noble variety. When asked about his success he claims, “It is this attention to detail and devotion to creating the optimum expression of the Riesling variety, that has seen Helm Wines recognised over three decades with numerous national and international awards and reviews for their Rieslings.”
This is their “Classic Riesling”, from what is shaping up as a truly classic Canberra vintage.
All about fruit purity and concentration, this is a benchmark for the Canberra Riesling style which has become so famous. Helm thinks this is one of his best vintages to date of this wine, to be compared with the excellent 2013 and 2008 vintages. With 96 points already under its hat from James Halliday, he isn’t wrong!

Ken Helm is a Riesling legend in Australia. He started his eponymous winery in Murrumbateman over 40 years ago, and has been turning our classic dry Rieslings ever since. In 2013 they ventured outside the Canberra district to source fruit from a stunning vineyard in Tumbarumba, in the western foothills of the Snowy Mountains. This is another belter - dry, piercing and filled with citrus fruits and ripe white pear flavours. A versatile wine with ripping acidity, this is a perfect foil for spicy Thai & Vietnamese flavours, as well as fresh seafood. Now, all we need is a bit of sunshine....
