Hemsby Mega Maze
Hemsby Mega Maze
for a family fun day out visit the Hemsby Mega Maze, just outside Great Yarmouth and not to far from Norwich. visit our website
The Mega Maze opens Sunday 20th July to Sunday 7th September. The Mega Maze is in an area of open countryside on the coast just north of Great Yarmouth in the seaside village of Hemsby.
You can come and visit the maze and then go to the beach to enjoy the miles of unspoilt sand that we have in this part of Norfolk.
If you are looking for a different type of walk in the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of normally daily life then the Mega Maze is for you. The Maze is something different which is good mind and body but also great fun.
There are two bridges within the Maze with superb viewing positions – you may even be able to see the offshore wind farm we have near the maze, and you will certainly be able to see all the other visitors who are getting lost within the maze!!

Hemsby is a village, civil parish and seaside resort in the English county of Norfolk. Hemsby is situated some 7.5 mi north of the town of Great Yarmouth. Hemsby borders the villages of Winterton-on-Sea and Scratby. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Great Yarmouth.
A Norfolk county map dated around 1610 shows a headland, called Winterton Ness, extending into the sea north-east of Hemsby. This headland has now almost entirely disappeared through coastal erosion. Hemsby along with much of the Norfolk coast was targeted by the Vikings, who initially raided the area in search of precious materials and slaves.
Hemsby's dunes are also being eroded, previously the wide beach has made the effect less noticeable, but the rate of erosion has increased significantly in the past two years, threatening homes, the local lifeboat station and the villages tourist industry. In 2013 a campaign was started to 'save hemsby beach': 'DIY' Sea defences are being built in attempt to stem the erosion.
Hemsby is split into two parts: Hemsby Village and Hemsby Beach. Hemsby Village is mainly the residential area located about a mile inland. Kingsway is an area of the village which includes a SPAR shop, hairdressers and Chinese restaurant. This is also the main location for buses into Great Yarmouth and Martham. St Mary the Virgin Church was built in the 12th century and is a landmark in the village.
The tourist-based part of the village lies along Beach Road and is commonly known as Hemsby Beach. It features funfairs, crazy golf courses and children's rides. The beach end of the road has cafes, shops and amusement arcades, while at the upper end are houses and accommodation parks, consisting mainly of chalets and caravans. The largest of the accommodation parks was a branch of Pontins, but this closed suddenly in January 2009 after a review from Pontins new owners Ocean Parks.
Hemsby was once served by Hemsby railway station which was located on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway between Great Yarmouth (Beach) and Melton Constable. It closed in 1959. Currently Hemsby is served by two First Norfolk & Suffolk bus services, the 1 and 3. The 3 serves Hemsby Beach and the 1 serves the village. Both stop at the Kingsway bus stop.

Hemsby in Norfolk sea defence work - Save Hemsby Coastline
After the devastating effects of the flooding in Hemsby in Norfolk back in 2013 work is still being done two years later to try and save its ever shrinking coastline.
The Scenario Explained in Description
Hello my name is Andrew, myself and my wife Abbey reside in Spring Rise, Egham with our 3 children. Our next door neighbour's next door neighbour is the University of London Library Depository who's property borders the property of Royal Holloway University. The entrance to the University of London Library Depository is used by Royal Holloway University Student's as extra access into the Royal Holloway University. The student's are told they must do their best to respect the neighbourhood and the residents that live in it by not making too much noise etc. The gate is locked at set times in the evenings and so is another gate further in on Royal Holloway University's property. However the student's tend to climb the gates and make a lot of noise in doing so. The University of London Library Depository is unmanned in the evenings and Royal Holloway University Security are responsible for patrolling their premises and locking the gate's at the set times.
My eldest child is diagnosed as autistic and will be starting school in September. Due to their condition they will be attending a specialist school 7 miles away from home to get the help they need. Both myself, my wife, and Surrey County Council will be going to a lot of extra effort and expense to send her there and I feel that all that may be compromised by all the disturbances we receive as a result of the University of London Library Depository allowing the student's of Royal Holloway University to pass through their land. It's not unusual for me or my wife to collect our eldest child from nursery and be told that they have been a bit drowsy, or that they fell asleep for a bit, or that they are currently asleep in the corner. So I have complained to the council, to Royal Holloway, and to the University of London Library Depository.
As the University of London Library Depositoryand Royal Holloway University have agreed to keep the gate open 24/7 from October due to student pressure I feel I should make some recordings of what goes on around here because from what I can see they are currently failing at controlling student behaviour and now want to expand their failure. As all recordings are at night and difficult to see what and who is where I have made this recording during the day just to show you the neighbourhood and how it's laid out.
00:01 My front garden
00:07 Spring Rise (my road)
00:25 Lynwood Avenue (also leads to the University gates)
00:50 This is the gate on the property of the UOL Depository
00:54 The times in which the gate is open for use
01:05 This alleyway runs in line with the back gardens of the surrounding houses
01:18 A lot of student's get louder once they get past the gate. One things I have mentioned in my complaints is that they have all this empty space on their fences to put signs up reminding them that they are still in a residential neighbourhood or something. Pub's thought of this years ago and these guys are supposed to be intillects but anyway this sign is all they could think of.
01:36 The 3rd and 4th windows from the right are where my children sleep.
01:56 The University of London Library Depository
02:31 This is where the land owned by the University of London Library Depository ends and the land owned by Royal Holloway University begins, This is also the other gate that is also locked at night. A few of my videos start when I hear the student's initially climbing this gate to exit the university late at night and then I carry on filming to record them climbing over the other gate whilst also catching the noise they are making in the mean time.

Hemsby England Engineering Hubris
This brief look at recent coastal bluff erosion in Hemsby England is a nice illustration of both increased rates of coastal erosion and the problems resulting from unwise and unchecked coastal development. It well illustrates the current situation across much of the globe and the indefatigable drive of coastal engineers to (attempt to) fight nature rather than working with these incredibly powerful forces. In this case, simple managed retreat is apparently too passive for the community of Hemsby and therefore provided the motivation for putting yet more foolish hardened structures onto the beach. Structures such as these so-called beehives ultimately do not stop cliff erosion but do heavily impact the ecosystem functioning (littoral sediment dynamics, shorebird foraging, etc.) and aesthetics of the beach.
This video is a truncated and modified version of a longer piece from Engineering Catastrophes (Season 2, Episode 4; Hell Fire USA) on the Science Channel. You can see the whole episode here:
