Hanging Temple of Hengshan - Datong, China
The magnificent, gravity defying Hanging Temple is one of the world's forgotten wonders. Clinging to a crag of Hengshan mountain the temple consists of 40 rooms linked by a dizzying maze of narrow passageways.
The temple was constructed by drilling holes into the cliffs side into which oak crossbeams and oak poles hold up the temple. The main supportive structure is hidden inside the bedrock.
The monastery is located in the small canyon basin, and the body of the building hangs from the middle of the cliff under the prominent summit, protecting the temple from rain, erosion and sunlight.
Interestingly the temple is dedicated to not just one religion, but three, with Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism all practiced within the temple and represented in 78 statues and carvings throughout the temple.
The Hanging Temple is also know as the Hanging Monastery or Xuankong, it's located about 60 km southwest of Datong, China in Shanxi province. The temple is said to have been built by a monk named Liao Ran during the late Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD) and restored in 1900.
The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2010, it was listed in 'Time Magazine' as the world's top ten most odd dangerous buildings.

Xuan Kong Si - Monasterio Colgante Hanging Temple Monastery Jinlong Heng Hunyuan Datong Shanxi China

In Shanxi province of China China are some sacred mountains and among them the mountain Heng Shan, where is the Hanging Monastery of Heng Shan, or Xuankong Si, pertaining to the religion of Taoism.
Hanging Monastery (Xuankong Si), Datong, China. 6 hours by train out of Beijing
Hanging Monastery stands at the cliff of Mt. Hengshan, 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of Hunyuan County, and 65 kilometers (40 miles) from downtown Datong City. Since it hangs on the west cliff of Jinxia Gorge more than 50 meters above the ground, it is called Hanging Temple Monastery.
Built in 491, it has survived more than 1400 years. The monastery was largely rebuilt and maintained in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Hanging Monastery, Datong Sculpture of Sakyamuni and Confucius!!!
How could a building like this withstand the winds and storms of so many years? Hanging Monastery is an architectural wonder. A unique mechanical theory was applied to building the framework. Crossbeams were half-inserted into the rock as the foundation, while the rock in back became its support. Seen from below, it appears to be a tumble-down castle in the air. Inside, it provides the same scene as other temples.
Construction experts from countries including Britain,Germany, and Italy, come to see the monastery. In their words, Hanging Monastery, which mixes mechanics, aesthetics, and Buddhism, is rare. The architecture and everything it symbolizes embodies a great cultural achievement of Chinese people.
The second attraction of Hanging Monastery is that it includes Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. Inside the monastery, the sculptures of Sakyamuni, Confucius and Laotzu appear together, which is unusual. There are 40 halls and cabinets, which contain about 80 sculptures made of copper, iron, terracotta, and stone. The features are vividly carved.
Why build a monastery like this? Location is the first reason; building a monastery on the cliff could shield it from floods. In addition, the mountain peak protects it from rain and snow; and the mountain around it also diminishes damage from long-time sunshine. The second reason is that the builders followed a principle in Taoism: no noises, including those from rooster crowing and dog barking; so from the upper ground, all noises drop away.

China’s Cliffside Hanging Temple under Revamp
North China's Shanxi Province is revamping an ancient temple known for its perilous perch on a sheer cliff to protect it from falling rocks. The 1,500-year-old Hanging Temple on Hengshan Mountain is closed to tourists, starting on Saturday.
The main structure of the scaffolding built to elevate workers was constructed from the foot of the mountain and till the side of the cliff.
After its closure, the scaffolding will be built up to the top of the temple, which will facilitate workers to repair weatherworn wood pillars and paintings.
The Hanging Temple, involving the Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, dates back to the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-535 AD). The unique wooden structure has kept it on the cliff face for more than 1,500 years, and made it survived several earthquakes.
In 2010, the Hanging Temple was listed on World's Top 10 Most Dangerous Architectures by the Time Magazine.
The temple consists of 40 rooms connected by a series of corridors, bridges and walkways and houses more than 80 bronze, iron and clay statues.

Hanging Temple (Hanging Monastery or Xuankong Temple) - China
Our visit to the Hanging Temple (Hanging Monastery or Xuankong Temple) outside of Datong, China. We hired a driver, our experience getting tickets, and our walk around the Temple area. The only temple with all three Chinese traditional religions: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism...and it's built over 100ft up the side of a mountain cliff face!

Xuangong Si - the Hanging Temple near DaTong
When you get to Datong you have to see the Hanging Monastery(Xuankong Si) . I love it, but you need one day for a visit because it is about 70 km outside of Datong. But it`s awesome! Like a little bird nest hanging on the cliffs. So peaceful!
On the way back it started to snow heavily and there are difficult climbs and winding roads through the mountains - the minibus was overloaded with 22 , like always in China, instead of 10 people for which the bus was originally built. Some cars were already stuck or were in the ditches - but for Gods sake, our driver had some snow chains which saved the day!
