GERMANY: Hermann Monument - Teutoburg Forest [HD]

On top of the Hermannsdenkmal (Hermann Monument) you have a spectacular view of the area.
The statue is 53,46m high and is situated in Teutoburg Forest, southwest of Detmold in the district of Lippe, Germany.

It can be seen from many different points of the county, looming above the land from its high point on the densely forested and 386m tall mountain Grotenburg.

The Hermannsdenkmal depicts Hermann (Arminius in Latin), who defeated the Romans in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in the year 9 A.D., thus driving them out of the land. This is why the figure crushes the Roman Eagle under its foot.

Construction was started in 1841, but not completed until 1875 with the help of substantial funds from the state of Prussia.

It was built according to plans by the sculptor Ernst von Bandel, who devoted his whole life to it. During construction he lived in a small hut a short distance from the statue (Bandel-Hütte) that can still be visit today.

Mein erster Flug in der alten Heimat. Hier hab ich überhaupt erst mit dem Quadcopterfliegen angefangen. Im Jahr 2014 mit einem ganz einfachen, aber nicht grad kleinen Quadcopter vom Real-Markt ohne die ganzen technischen Gimmicks und auch ohne Kamera. Bin immer gerne auf dem ehemaligen Max Bahr - Parkplatz geflogen und musste aufpassen, daß er dort nicht aufs Dach weht. Jetzt wohne ich nicht mehr in Detmold, habe aber endlich die Möglichkeit Luftaufnahmen von diesem schönen Ort zu machen, wenn ich mal wieder zu Besuch bin. Es war hier nicht immer einfach für mich hier, aber der Ort gehört zu meinem Leben und hat trotzdem viele Dinge, die ich liebe. Da man vermutlich nicht in das Naturschutzgebiet hinein darf mit dem Kopter, bin ich leider nicht so nah dran am Hermann, wie ich gerne wollte. Direkte Aufnahmen vor Ort wurden mir leider untersagt auf meine schriftliche Anfrage hin bei der Denkmal-Stiftung. Dafür gibts halt jetzt mehr von Hiddesen :) Es wird sicher nicht meine einzige Aufnahme vom schönen Lipperland bleiben.

The first flight in my old home town Detmold. In this city I started with my aerial flight hobby. At that stage in 2014 with a not too small quadcopter without all the technical gimmicks and without a camera. I fell so much in love with flying. Now that I do not live there anymore I finally have the ability with the right equipment to honor that lovely place. I had some hard times here, but in the end it belongs to my live and sometimes I really miss to be here, but thats ok as i can always come back to spend some hours or days. I wanted to film the Hermann Momument from much closer, but I did not get the permission to unfortunately. Well therefore you can see more of the little village Hiddesen. Also a sweet view. This will be for sure not the last time I will film Lippe and in particular Detmold.

Das wohl berühmteste Detmolder Ausflugsziel ist das Hermannsdenkmal auf der 356m hohen Grotenburg in Detmold-Hiddesen, südwestlich der Innenstadt. Weit überragt die Figur die Landschaft und prägt das Bild.
Es wurde zur Erinnerung an die Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald 9 n. Chr. zwischen den Jahren 1838 und 1875 erbaut.

Die Varusschlacht gehörte lange Zeit zu den nationalen Legenden Deutschlands.
Im Jahre 9 n.Chr. brachte der Cheruskerfürst Arminius (deutsch: Hermann) dem Römischen Reich eine vernichtende Niederlage bei.
Er schlug die drei Legionen des Varus und beendete somit Roms Versuche, Germanien zu unterwerfen.
Seine Tat soll die Einheit der germanischen Stämme demonstriert haben.

Im 19. Jahrhundert glaubten Gelehrte, die Varusschlacht habe im Teutoburger Wald stattgefunden.
Daher wurde das Denkmal 1875 auf dem Teuteberg im südlichen Teil des Waldes erbaut.
Das fast 54 Meter hohe Denkmal ist von weithin sichtbar und ein ideales Ziel bei Wanderungen durch den Teutoburger Wald.

Mit einer Figurhöhe von 26,57 Metern und einer Gesamthöhe von 53,46 Metern ist es die höchste Statue Deutschlands und war von 1875 bis 1886 die höchste Statue der Welt.

The most famous tourist destination is the Detmold Memorial Hermann on the 356m high Grotenburg in Detmold Hiddesen, southwest of downtown. Far surpassing the figure and the landscape is the hallmark.
It was built to commemorate the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest 9 AD between the years 1838 and 1875.

The Varus Battle was a long time with the national legends of Germany.

GERMANY: Detmold Castle [HD]

The princely residence castle is located in the center of the town park of Detmold.

Originally this building was more of a fortress than the beautiful castle you can admire today.

All through the Middle Ages the fortress was expanded but only as recently as in the 18th century the former fortress was renovated according to Baroque style and with this turned into a luxurious castle.

You can visit part of the Renaissance castle daily by means of a guided tour.

Marvel at the various state rooms and halls, which mainly date from the 18th and 19th centuries, although there are older items such as the Brussels tapestries from the 17th century on display.

Dr. Armin Prinz zur Lippe still lives in the castle; he is related to the Dutch royal family.

Filming in the courtyard (and inside the castle) is not allowed (so I was told after I finished filming).

GERMANY: 'Externsteine' rock pillars - Teutoburg Forest [HD]

'Externsteine' is a distinctive rock formation located in the Teutoburg Forest of northwestern Germany, not far from the city of Detmold.

It is a natural outcropping of five sandstone pillars, the tallest of which is 37.5m high.

They form a wall of several hundred metres in length, in a region that is otherwise largely devoid of rocks.

The geological formation consists of a hard, erosion-resistant sandstone, laid down during the early Cretaceous era about 120 million years ago, near the edge of a large shallow sea that covered large parts of Northern Europe at the time.

The pillars have been modified and decorated by humans over the centuries in a variety of fascinating and mysterious ways: holes were drilled for no apparent reason; stairs lead to dead ends; platforms serve no clear purpose.

An undeniably mysterious and magical place, Externsteine is thought to have been a pagan cultic center until Charlemagne abolished Saxon paganism in 782 AD. It was then used by Christian hermits throughout the Middle Ages.

At the top of the tallest stone is a chamber, now open. Formerly used for sacrifices, little decoration remains apart from one wall with a circular hole cut into it. Studies have shown that this is some form of calendar. On the exact day each year when summer turns to winter, the sun shines exactly onto this hole.
