HERMANUS
Hermanus is the 'jewel of the Overberg', or the 'whale capital of the world' - it depends on who you ask!
Hermanus is world famous for its land-based whale watching. The 12km long Cliff Path offers various view points to see the whales, with some taking you only a few metres from the whales!
They can be seen in the southern winter and spring season (June - November) after migrating from the Antarctic, when they seek out the waters of the Overstrand, especially Walker Bay, to calve and mate.
Nowadays much more than a sleepy old fishing village - Hermanus has loads more to offer. From spectacular restaurants, coffee shops and art galleries to various adventure activities, hiking/MTB trails and the picturesque wine route of the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) valley.
Due to its close proximity to both the ocean and mountains - it surely is a uniquely beautiful destination, well worth a visit!
This short video only scratches the tip of what is on offer in Hermanus.

Onwards to Hermanus - whale watching, South Africa ep. 3, ตามล่าหาปลาวาฬ, อาฟริกาใต้
In this last leg of our South Africa trip we start off in Simon's town and drive eastwards along the coast to Hermanus, where we get an amazing view over the ocean and across the Old Harbour (Walker Bay) and are once more wished welcome by whales (is this the Southern Right Whale?) jumping, breaching and blowing.
We see it all from the cliffs, where we also encounter the adorable flower eating Dassie (Rock Badger, or Cape Hyrax). The Dassie does not seem to be bothered by passerbys at all.
The trip back to Cape Town goes through beautiful mountain areas and winelands, in particular the fields and charming town of Stellenbosch.
This video is taken with a hand-held Panasonic NV MX8 video camera, and edited in Pinnacle Studio.

SEEING WHALES IN HERMANUS
5th & 6th of October 2016 // South Africa - Days 14 & 15
Previous Video:
After diving in the ice cold waters of the South Atlantic to observe the Great Whites, I have successfully caught a cold which drained me from most of my energy. I couldn’t however leave Hermanus without seeing a whale so Chrissa and I spent the last two days we had here, on the beach front looking out. First we saw them breaching far off in the distance but on the next day as we were having breakfast we saw a whole bunch of people gathering and looking towards the sea. We took our cameras, went to join them and lo and behold there was a whale flipping its tail right there in front of us, not far from the shore! We just sat and watched it for over an hour! Unfortunately it seems I’ve lost most of the footage I took go it so I’ve added a couple of still images to compensate. Tomorrow we are heading to Cape Town where we will spend our last week.

Hermanus - Whale Capital of the World
Hermanus - popular seaside resort at South Africa's Overberg coast in the Western Cape Province. The town calls itself the Whale Capital of the World. Every year between July and November hundreds of Southern Right Whales come to the calm waters of Walker Bay for breeding. The Whale Crier of Hermanus blows his kelp horn, when whales have been sighted. Then everybody looks out onto the sea then. What makes Hermanus so special: The marine mammals come within a few metres of the cliffs and can be watched at close range. Only if the waters are calm though. When the sea is rough the whales stay far away from the coast. A 15 kilometre long cliff path runs along the rocky shores of Hermanus - with many well placed lookout points. Beautiful beaches lie in the east of Hermanus.
Some kilometres further east along the Walker Bay is the small holiday village of De Kelders, also a preferred spot for whale watchers. The whales come very close to the cliffs here. Viewers who climb onto the rocks can almost touch the whales.

Hermanus 2017 - Whale Watching
Whale Watching in Hermanus
Hermanus, a 90-minute scenic drive from Cape Town on South Africa’s Whale Coast and Garden Route, is rightfully known as one of the best places in the world to watch whales. We set off with Dyer Island Cruises for a whale-watching tour that took us from Dyer Island – which is home to hundreds of Cape fur seals and a colony of endangered African penguins – out into the Atlantic to watch southern right whales mate, frolic, breach and calve. Every year they return in June to Hermanus’s Walker Bay where they stay until October and the time comes for them to return to the vast Southern Ocean.

Whale Watching | Hermanus - South Africa
The best time for watching the southern right whale in South African waters all the way from Antarctica is from June to November along the Coast of Hermanus where you can watch whales from the Bay.
Whale watching at Hermanus South Africa
Whale watching in Hermanus, South Africa in October 2013. Hermanus is a lovely place on the way between Cape Town to Mossel Bay. A stop over for lunch is a must at Hermanus if any one is doing the Garden Route. If you are lucky and the season is right you will get to see the whales. Even otherwise, Hermanus is a beautiful location.
