FAMOUS GRAVE TOUR: Hi Jolly Pioneer Cemetery In Quartzsite, Arizona
Welcome to Famous Grave Tours. Thanks for joining me as I visit the cemeteries, graveyards, graves, memorials and final resting places of the famous people who have touched our lives. From movie stars to world leaders, from those whose died before their time, to those who lived to be centenarians, or who became historic figures--they may be gone, but they're not forgotten.
In this video tour, I visit the Hi Jolly Pioneer Cemetery, in Quartzsite, Arizona and the tomb of Arizona desert pioneer, Hi Jolly or Hadji Ali.
Jim and I visited the Hi Jolly Cemetery, on the way to my mom's house, in Quartzsite, Arizona today. In addition to its rocks and gems, Quartzsite is also know for camels. And even had camel races, each year, until just recently. In 1856, Hi Jolly became one of the first camel drivers hired by the US Army's Camel Corp., to map out a trail through the desert, to the Colorado River. When the job ended, Jolly stayed and made the Quartzsite area, near the Colorado River, his home. The cemetery is named in his honor. According to his Wiki page, Hi Jolly or Hadji Ali, and later known as Philip Tedro, was born Ali al-Hajaya in 1828 and died December 16, 1902 in what is now called Quartzsite, Arizona.

I also have a playlist of just travel videos if you don't like all the tech stuff:
============================
I left the rat race to live full time on the road and so can you! The key to freedom is to lower your expenses. In my former life, I managed a company that struggled to stay out of the red. This is where I learned to hone my frugality skills and use them to my own advantage by becoming a minimalist at home. The biggest expense we all have living in a sticks and bricks is our rent or mortgage. We work most of our adult lives to make a bank or landlord / landlady rich! With ever increasing real estate prices and stagnant wages the cost of living has skyrocketed. Many can barely make ends meet and live paycheck to paycheck. You can stop the madness by thinking outside the box and joining this growing movement of full-timers that enjoy van-dwelling or RV living. If you dream about a life of travel you can do it incredibly cheap just by downsizing your lifestyle into a RV or van tiny house and becoming mobile.
In this series, I go from a home in the Los Angeles hills packed full of stuff and owning two cars to full-timing in a Roadtrek campervan in less than 6 months. I buy an old camper van on Craigslist and deck it out just like home with all kinds of technology to make life comfortable on the road. I hope to encourage those that think they can't do it by showing how it CAN be done by planning carefully and taking baby steps.

Hi Jolly Monument
Final resting place of a Syrian camel drover and his camel. Quartzsite, Arizona. In the video I state that the story of the Red Ghost featured on Tales of Wells Fargo. It was, in fact, featured on Death Valley Days that was sponsored by Borax.
Big Nose Kate Grave Visit
The final resting place of Mary Katherine Horony - Cummings, also known as 'Big Nose Kate', the on/off girlfriend and common-law wife of John Henry 'Doc' Holliday. She rests in the northwest corner of the Arizona Pioneers Home Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona, located at 1300 Iron Springs Road. Unlike other videos, I'm not going to talk you to death with ten+ minutes of meaningless blah blah blah, let's get right to it and see what grave and surrounding area looks like...

History of Islam in America: Whither and Where - Yasir Qadhi
A comprehensive history of Islam in America. Yasir Qadhi explores the history of Islam and Muslims in the Americas from the beginning to the present day, discussing everything from the pre-Columbus era to theories about early Muslim exploration of the New World, to the Muslim Slave experience, the Nation of Islam, right through to the advent of both early and recent Muslim immigration. Coincidentally, from the same podium where Abraham Lincoln spoke a few hundred years ago, and Barack Hussein Obama, two days earlier. Along the way we learn the amusing story about Hajji Ali, also know as Hi Jolly, the Greek-Syrian convert from Constantinople who was hired to come to America and raise camels of all things.
Yasir Qadhi gave this speech at IlmFest 2008 in New York hosted by AlMaghrib Institute's Qabeelat Tayyabah.
Notes from the lecture:
-Until we understand where we came from, we dont understand who we are and how Islam became so prominent in the Americas.
-Even during slavery Abu Bakr AsSiddique said that The faith of our family is the faith of Islam (1834)
-The money that financed Columbus came from the fallen Muslim caliphate of Grenada a few months prior to his setting sail in 1492.
-George Washington is quoted as saying that he would even have Muhammadans (ie: Muslims) come to Mt. Vernon if they are good workmen (citizens).
-The well documented slave, Ayyub ibn Sulayman wrote 3 entire Qur'ans from memory which are still present today. He went to England to see the king in the 1730s and when they wanted to paint him in his cultural garments, he said that he would describe them (for he did not have any).. to which the painter replied how can I draw something I haven't seen... to which Ayyub ibn Sulayman said::
How can you then draw pictures of God, Whom no one has seen?
-One slave, Bilani Mohammad was owned by a just slave owner who allowed the slaves to practive Islam freely.
-Later, a book of Bilani Mohammad was found--this was a book of fiqh written from memory and changed for the situation of the slaves.
-Many of Mohammad's descendants had memories of their great grandfather and other relatives practicing Islam. Among the many points, they said
Aunty Hanna was mighty punctual about prayer
-The Nation of Islam spread a pseudo-Islam in the African American community - but, sometimes bad things lead to good. i.e: Muhammad Ali (who made Muhammad a household name), Malcolm X, and Kareem Abdul Jabbar all joined orthodox Islam after first going through the Nation.
On Warith Deen Muhammad: You may have your criticisms, and I have mine, but this is a man who took his entire community from blatant shirk to Sunni Islam.
-Hadji Ali, a Greek born in Constantinople and later converted to Islam. His name was too complicated for people to pronounce, so if you wanna look him up you'll have to search under the name Hi Jolly
He was buried in Quartzsite, Arizona, there's a pyramid with a camel on top of his grave and it is the most popular tourist attraction in Quartzsite, Arizona. The question is, what else can be found in Quartzsite, Arizona?!
Yasir Qadhi was born in Houston, Texas and completed his primary and secondary education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah. After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences. Thereafter, he completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah.
His published works include Riya'a: The Hidden Shirk, Du'aa: The Weapon of the Believer, and An Introduction to the Sciences of the Qur'an.
Yasir Qadhi is currently pursuing his doctorate, in Religious Studies, at Yale University in New Haven, CT.

Pioneer Cemetery- Across from Lunken Field, Cincinnati, Oh
The video begins on Wilmer Ave, directly across from Lunken Field. In fact, just yards from where I am standing at the beginning of the video are parked several single engine aircraft.
The cemetery is quite amazing. Some tombstones are leaning & some are knocked over. Some even appear to be missing altogether. Some of the older tombstones appear to have been encased in newer cement, apparently in an effort to help preserve them from further deterioration.
Amazingly, some of the stones are precariously close to the perimeter of the cemetery.
One nearby commercial building is merely feet away from a few of the stones. To put the building as close as possibe to the graveyard, they have cut away at the hillside on which this cemetery is located.
On another edge of the cemetery, a fence runs between the cemetery and a railroad. One of the tombstones is physically touching the fence. In another case, a tree is literally growing AROUND a tombstone.

Sunset Mormon Cemetery, Homolovi, AZ
The travelers visit Sunset Cemetery, all that remains of the Mormon settlement at Sunset, Arizona. Cemetery is on a hill overlooking the Little Colorado River. Although warned by local Native Americans about flooding, Mormons built here with disastrous results. Wind was so strong here that it's difficult to hear any audio.

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL PASS DISCOUNT FAIL AT NATIONAL FOREST CAMPGROUND NC
For stops 13 & 14 on our Trek Across America, we make our way from Lexington, NC to Newport, NC to spend some time camping the Atlantic Coast. Little did we know we would run into a dead end, and also get cheated out of a discount with our America The Beautiful National Park and Federal Recreational Lands Pass. Thanks to Recreation.gov poor user interface planning (or maybe it's a conspiracy to make us overpay for camping)?
