Michell's Pass - Return of Steam - Part One
In 2015 the Ceres Rail Company received their first newly restored locomotive, 19D No.3321 and started operations shortly there after.
Initially the company offered day trips from Ceres golf estate down the short branch line and Michell's Pass to Waverley wine estate.
Departing from De Meter station with the train pausing briefly at Waverley wine estate for the passengers to have lunch. The train would then continue to Wolseley where the locomotive would be turned on the tri-angle ready for the return trip back to Ceres.
Arriving back at De Meter the crew would once again uncouple the locomotive so that it could proceed to Prince Alfred Hamlet to be turned for the second trip of the day. This was sometimes repeated after the last trip of the day so that the locomotive would be ready for the next excursion.
Many of the locations seen in the clip are inaccessible by road and at the time I would use my night shift week to go filming there. I found packing lunch and spending the entire day up there to be the most efficient way to use my time.
Ceres Rail Company can be contacted at or via their Facebook account.

Ice Cold In Ceres - Alex Stayed At Home!
I don’t mind running in the rain. I love running in the cold. But running in cold rain? No way!
However, today’s run with Falkland Trail Runners was part of my “transition group” programme that takes them from 5km to 10km over ten weeks. For me to stay at home, leaving them to face the elements would be totally unfair. So we faced teeming rain and a bitterly cold wind together.
The run was 6km from the village of Ceres in Fife, heading for the Hill of Tarvit estate via the tracks and by-ways around Ceres and Craigrothie. The route would be used for a race in a few weeks’ time, and the main Falkland Trail Runners group would press on ahead, running all the way to the top of the hill. The “transition group” would stop at the entrance to the estate and head back the way they came. It’s quite a testing route even under fair conditions – mostly uphill all the way from Ceres to the estate, with some narrow, muddy tracks making it quite technical in places.
The video end with the usual piece of reflection. Only one day earlier, Malcolm had been really down – feeling tired and lacking any motivation, questioning the whole idea of running a first marathon at age 60 years old. Today, he was running in conditions that would normally have him stay at home … but he loved it. There was no sign of the previous day’s hamstring problem, he never felt tired, and he felt like he could have run a half marathon with no troubles.
It’s all very peculiar – but very interesting.
--------------------------------
Malcolm is a 59 year old who lives in the east of Scotland, near Edinburgh and St Andrews. He used to run in his twenties but gave it up when his family came along. Thirty years later, he had lost his fitness, gained a lot of weight and was on medication for high blood pressure. Deciding to take control again, he started to count his calories, and picked up the running bug again.
He now leads a jogscotland group and helps organise Falkland Trail Runners. He also runs with “Leven Las Vegas”. If all that wasn’t enough of a challenge, he’s decided that he’ll celebrate turning 60 years of age by running his first ever marathon!
The series covers topics such as
• diet and nutrition for older runners
• podiatry, footwear and keeping your feet in top condition
• physiotherapy and other ways to treat aches, pains and injuries
• training techniques for late middle age
• heart rate, lactate level and other factors for endurance running
• effective warmup and cool down regimes for older people
• running economy and using active recovery to run farther with less effort
• avoiding injury with proper running form
These are explained from a perspective of practical experience and personal research. With luck, the channel will also include contributions from sports scientists and health professionals with an understanding of exercise in later years.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The Industrial Revolution in Scotland was the transition to new manufacturing processes and economic expansion between the mid-eighteenth century and the late nineteenth century. By the start of the eighteenth century, a political union between Scotland and England became politically and economically attractive, promising to open up the much larger markets of England, as well as those of the growing British Empire, resulting in the Treaty of Union of 1707. There was a conscious attempt among the gentry and nobility to improve agriculture in Scotland. New crops were introduced and enclosures began to displace the run rig system and free pasture. The economic benefits of union were very slow to appear, some progress was visible, such as the sales of linen and cattle to England, the cash flows from military service, and the tobacco trade that was dominated by Glasgow after 1740. Merchants who profited from the American trade began investing in leather, textiles, iron, coal, sugar, rope, sailcloth, glass-works, breweries, and soap-works, setting the foundations for the city's emergence as a leading industrial center after 1815.
The linen industry was Scotland's premier industry in the eighteenth century and formed the basis for the later cotton, jute, and woolen industries. Encouraged and subsidized by the Board of Trustees so it could compete with German products, merchant entrepreneurs became dominant in all stages of linen manufacturing and built up the market share of Scottish linens, especially in the American colonial market. Historians often emphasize that the flexibility and dynamism of the Scottish banking system contributed significantly to the rapid development of the economy in the nineteenth century. At first the leading industry, based in the west, was the spinning and weaving of cotton. After the cutting off of supplies of raw cotton from 1861 as a result of the American Civil War Scottish entrepreneurs and engineers, and its large stock of easily mined coal, the country diversified into engineering, shipbuilding, and locomotive construction, with steel replacing iron after 1870. As a result, Scotland became a center for engineering, shipbuilding and the production of locomotives.
Scotland was already one of the most urbanized societies in Europe by 1800. Glasgow became one of the largest cities in the world, and known as the Second City of the Empire after London. Dundee upgraded its harbor and established itself as an industrial and trading center. The industrial developments, while they brought work and wealth, were so rapid that housing, town-planning, and provision for public health did not keep pace with them, and for a time living conditions in some of the towns and cities were notoriously bad, with overcrowding, high infant mortality, and growing rates of tuberculosis. Owners to support government sponsored housing programs as well as self-help projects among the respectable working class. Even with the growth of industry there were insufficient good jobs, as a result, during the period 1841–1931, about two million Scots emigrated to North America and Australia, and another 750,000 Scots relocated to England. By the twenty-first century, there ...
