Everest Base Camp Trek: The Logistics
Hiking gear
Since Jeff and I were traveling and spent a month in Bali before our Everest basecamp trek, we were wildly unprepared for the trek. We did have base layers and some long sleeves, but not much else! However, it is good to know that you can find everything you need in Katmandu, Lukla or even higher, up to Namche Bazaar at 3,400m - however, it does get a little more expensive as you go up, of course.
We strongly recommend to rent sleeping bags and down jackets - we rented both of those for about $2.50 per day per person at the Kala Pattar shop in Thamel, Katmandu. We also bought the rest of our hiking gear, including hiking backpacks, hiking boots, gloves, hats, neck warmers, fleece-doubled hiking pants and warm socks at the same shop - the more you buy, the more you can haggle!
Aside from finding a good backpack to carry everything on your back, it is an absolute must that you also have an easy access bag, like a bumbag, for all those things you’ll be needing easy access to like your phone, chapstick, tissues, money, permits, snacks, camera, etc. We highlight recommend Eastpak products, and neither of us travel anywhere without their bumbags around our necks.
Altitude
It is important to inform yourself and your group members about the effects of altitude and AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Early symptoms from 2,500m can include a strong headache, and you need to stop climbing. Start descending immediately if you experience dizziness, shortness of breath while resting, nausea or exhaustion in addition to the headache. AMS can lead to HAPE (high altitude pulmonary oedema) or HACE (high altitude cerebral oedema), which are both life threatening, but usually only occur at very high altitude. Make sure to be aware and to follow the recommendations to avoid AMS, and don’t climb more than 500 meters a day above 3,000 meters. If you are feeling unwell, you can inform the lodge owners, they are very helpful and most can organize a helicopter rescue if needed.
Diamox should not be taken by pregnant women or anyone with liver or kidney issues.
Everest Base Camp Trek: The Full Itinerary
Day 1 - Katmandu (4,593ft / 1,400m) - Lukla (9,334ft / 2,845m) to Phakding (8,563ft / 2,610m) to Monjo (9,301ft / 2,835m)
Trekking time: 3 hours from Lukla to Phakding + 3 hours from Phakding to Monjo. Total 6 hours
The trek to Everest base camp starts with a relatively nerve wracking flight, in the smallest plane we’ve ever taken - only 7 seats, and one flight attendant! You will be offered mints and cotton for your ears as the plane takes off from Katmandu and zigzags in between mountains to approach Tenzing–Hillary Airport in Lukla.
Tip: Make sure to seat on the plane’s left side for the best views of the Himalayas!
You will see Lukla’s famous short landing strip with its 11.7% gradient appear in front of you. While it can make you nervous, embrace the feeling of landing on the 500m strip, it will definitely be a good story to tell!
Once you get out of the plane, you will find yourself in the second smallest airport in the world. From there, grab your bag, and let’s head on the trek!
You should normally arrive early morning, before 8.30am, so you can be in Phakding for lunch.
Start walking on the path and enjoy the first 2 hours going downhill - how easy, you will think. Beware, as you will have to go up during the last 2 hours of the trek!
Stop in Phakding for lunch halfway, and continue another 3 hours of uphill hiking to Monjo, through beautiful sceneries with prayer wheels and suspended bridges where you can spend your first night.

Everest Base Camp Trek to the base of the world’s highest mountain Mount Everest(8848), offers the ultimate challenge for trekkers and adventurers. Filled with breathtaking mountain panoramas and charming Sherpa settlements, the trail goes up the Dudh Koshi Valley to Namche Bazaar and Kala Patthar (5555m), the highest point of the trek. This is a walk on the wild side. If you are up for the challenge, this is one of the most inspiring places in the world to do it.
This Everest Base Camp Trek is a great introductory lodge trek that offers sensational mountain views and an insight into the lives of the Sherpa people. After exploring the temples, shrines and bazaars of Kathmandu, we take an exciting mountain flight to Lukla and trek up the Dudh Koshi Valley, surrounded by the soaring peaks of Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru. It’s a steep ascent to Namche Bazaar, capital of the Khumbu Sherpas, where we are again greeted by spectacular mountain vistas. A rest day here aids acclimatization and there are great optional walks to enjoy the area. We then follow the trail to Tengboche, located high on a ridge where a magnificent 360-degree panorama awaits. The views of Everest, Lhotse-Nuptse Wall, Ama Dablam and Kantega dominate this peaceful and spiritual location – surely one of the most tranquil and inspiring places in the world.
While passing Buddhist monasteries, views of Everest get closer every day. This stunning trek visits Everest Base Camp (5,365 m), which is a premier goal for many adventurous walkers in the Himalayas, and Kala Patthar (5,555 m), a viewpoint recognised as the best vantage point to see Mount Everest. After trekking to the Base Camp and Kala Patthar, we return at our leisurely pace back to Namche and Lukla for our return flight to Kathmandu.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

12 Days Everest Base Camp Trek 2017, Our journey through the himalayas :)
This video is about my everest base camp trek (EBC) journey done over 12 days starting on the 7th of April from Kathmandu. I recorded the total steps walked on my fitbit, the heights we reached and the activities we did daily.
I did the hike with my mum and brother and we hired the porter and guide service from a trek shop owner who we know in Kathamandu. The service was charged on a daily basis, which we settled in between and at the end of our trek, and we paid a-la-carte for our accomodation and food to the hotels.
We didn't really train for this trek, as it was quite spontaneous (like most Nepalese things ), we planned it in less than 2 weeks, but we are all generally fit (I hike at least 2 times a month, my bro gyms and my mum walks everywhere, literally).
My brother came to Hong Kong from Sydney (I live in hk) and we flew together to Nepal where we met our mum. She had purchased all the necessities we needed such as sleeping bags, water bags, water tablets etc.
Such a fun adventure to appreciate my homeland. Nepal truly is a beauty, and the Himalayas; it's crowning jewel!
The camera and equipments I used were:
1) xiaomi gopro camera =
2) Waterproof housing case=
3) xiaomi stick like this=
4) Samsung Galaxy S6edge mobile phone (but now I upgraded to S10 and its amazing!)
5) Fit bit Alta HR (to count my steps and heartrate)
6) AND POWERBANK!!! so important! (because electricity is scarce up there, you have to pay extra to charge your items) so charge up and take as many as poss
I wish I had : a solar powered power bank might be handy too =
And lots more chocolates to distribute to kids and other local people we met.
Some common ques i get asked , thought I'd put it here to make it easier:
-???? the weather in April was great; it was around 15~ 20 degrees when we started, when we got to tengboche 4000m (day 5~6) , the temp drops to around -3 in the morn but still sunny and hot during the day so good to layer off, gorak shep is the coldest -10, and while coming down it's hot again. So in total around 6 days of really freezing weather when suns down.
- $$ (all in nepalese rupees) We bought our own plane tickets to lukla and paid alacarte per day rate to our guide (rps 2000) and porter (rps 1500) as they were recomemded by our friends, the food cost around rps 1500~2000 per day, the accomodation is free if you eat your meal at the lodge. in total was rps 56k per person
- ????♀️ To prepare, you need to hike, walk and exercise and just be generally fit. Best is to hike every week for a few months to get familiar to walking and hiking. In this trek you're hiking up and down for 4 to 6 hrs a day so your stamina is gotta be good. But you walk pretty slowly and take plenty of rest so it's not a massive problem if you're not super athletic. I saw many older mature people as well as young children in this trek.
My recommendations of things to take with you from personal experience:
3 tops /tsirts (can be gym tops)
2 thin long sleeve tops for uv protection
2 long tights /hiking toursers that can be shorts too
2 high necks (from day 6)
1 windproof jacket (from day 5 )
1 thigh down jacket (day 7 and 8)
1 windproof and waterproof hiking trousers (day 7 to 9)
1 hoodie
2 thermal pants (from day 6 to 9)
1 glove and glove liner with phone touch finger tip thingy (to take photos without hand being cold)
1 cap /beenie
2 neck cover /warmer (the thin round one that goes around ur neck...you need this to put over your nose for the dust while hiking)
towel
water camel back
underwears and socks
other things :
pantyliner
wet wipes
water tablets
hydralite
meds
snacks (mars bars )
hand warmers
lip balm
tissue packs

The Quest For Everest: Ep 2 - Nepal
My flatmate Chris and I went on a 3 week trip, where we got to travel through China, Tibet & Nepal with the highlight of reaching Mt Everest base camp.
However, our plans fall apart with Chris being hospitalised with severe altitude sickness. Will we succeed with our quest for Everest?
The second episode sees us arriving in Kathmandu where Chris will be at safe altitude. Joining the backpacking scene we explore the vibrant city.
Following this we travel to Pokhara for an action-packed week of ultra-light flying, mountain biking, white water rafting and canyoning before returning to Kathmandu to fly up to Everest.
