Hachiman-bori Canal is the pride and joy of Omihachiman City. The canal is five-kilometers long and was used in the past to not only transport people and merchandises but also used to divide the city by class and caste.
It was in the late 16th Century that the Toyotomi noble family wanted to develop Omihachiman City by connecting it to Lake Biwa, and de facto made Omihachiman City into a huge trading post between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Himure Hachimangu Shrine is located in Shiga-ken.This shrine is very historic and visited by many Japanese and Foreigners.This is a large shrine.You can walk around the shrine,this has good views outside and located at Mount Hachiman.
Japan Trip Lake Biwa Omi Hachiman Day Trip
Day Trip to Omi Hachiman City just east of Lake Biwa (aka Biwako) the largest freshwater lake in Japan.
We started our day with a boat tour with Suigo Meguri . The canal tour will give you a taste of “satoyama” (living with nature) that is a way of life in much of Japan.
We had lunch close by at Sumiyagura: A restaurant that specializes in unagi (freshwater eel. The food, service, and atmosphere were wonderful. Highly recommended.After lunch, we visited Omi-Hachiman City: Strolled through the old town and visited the Himure Hachimangu Shrine: in all, great day of sightseeing in Japan!

Himure Hachimangu Shrine - Shiga - 日牟禮八幡宮 - 4K Ultra HD
Located at the foot of Mount Hachiman in Shiga prefecture, and a few meters away from the Hachiman Bori canal, Himure Hachimangu Shrine is the largest shrine in Omihachiman. It was first established in 131 by Takenouchi no Sukune. In 275 Emperor Ojin visited the shrine and had a divine vision. He saw two sacred rings around the sun that later lead to the name of the shrine “Himure no Yashiro Hachimangu”, which means Sun Gathering Shrine.
It was during the reign of Empress Jito (690-697) the shrine was renamed Himure Shrine after a famous poem.

我眼追想 2018 滋賀県近江八幡市 日牟禮八幡宮と八幡堀巡り
滋賀県近江八幡市 日牟禮八幡宮と八幡掘巡りに行ってきました。
日牟禮八幡宮は誉田別尊、息長足姫尊、比売神の三神がおまつりされています。
近江の守護する由緒ある神社です。
大きな楼門と拝殿、本殿 美しい建物です。
参拝後は八幡堀を散策。
鬼平犯科帳、必殺仕事人 、るろうに剣心など映画や時代劇のロケ地ににもなっています。
船で水郷巡りも良いですね。桜の並木が春の素晴らしい景観を予感させました

【続日本100名城】近江国八幡山城 平成27年(2015) 初秋
2015年の9月中旬、滋賀県近江八幡市にある八幡山城址を訪れました。
1585年(天正13年)、近江八幡43万石を領した豊臣秀次は安土城の西隣の地に八幡山城を築き本能寺の変後に焼失した安土城の建物や城下町を移築しました。
八幡山（標高283m、比高100m）山頂に本丸や二の丸の城郭、
南の麓には秀次の居館や家臣団の館が並んでいました。
1590年（天正18年）には京極高次が2万8千石で入城するも、
1595年（文禄4年）秀次事件で羽柴秀次は切腹し八幡山城は廃城となりました。
現在、八幡山にはロープウェイが整備され、城下の八幡掘り等は観光客が多く訪れる観光地となっています。

During the Omihachiman Himatsuri (Fire Festival) ten-meter-tall giant sacred umbrella torches (kasa taimatsu) made of rape plant, reed, bamboo, cedar, rice straw, and white paper tassel are set ablaze at Hachimangu Shrine in Omihachiman, Shiga.
The Omi region around the small rural town of Omihachiman on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa is part of a wider plain in which rice is intensively cultivated. Similar to the Yamato plain around Nara or the fertile river plains around Kyoto and Osaka, it was from earliest times one of the most important seeds of Japanese culture.
Children’s sacred torches (kodomo taimatsu) are provided with a white paper-sign (gohei) at the top. They are made by the male members of families for their sons of certain age. First the kodomo taimatsu are usually set up in front of the entrance door of the house for several days. In the festival evening they are carried to the shrine and set on fire together with the kasa taimatsu as a sacrifice to the deity.
The fire festival (himatsuri) opens with the arrival of huge drums carried on big frames by men. The drums are beaten with thick sticks which produce a thundering sound. A group of old style firemen bring the initial fire.

Northeast of Hikone Castle, Genkyu-en has been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty. Centering on a huge pond, the garden with 9 bridges was built by Naooki Ii, the 4th lord of the Ii clan, in 1677. With Hikone Castle in the background, the beautiful Rinchikaku kiosk seems to extend into the pond.

Omihachiman Sagicho Festival 2016 f
In mid March, ten Sagicho floats gather at Himure Hachimangu Shrine. The floats parade through the town to the accompaniment of people shouting ‘Cho yare, yare yare! .’ The people carrying the mikoshi (portable shrines) are called odoriko.

This is the Omihachiman canal. I live right next to it. This area is home to the Himure shrine and the Hakuunkan (some building that seems to be important to the community).
