Engaku-ji (円覚寺) Temple, Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Engaku-ji (円覚寺)Temple is located in Kamakura of Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan. During the hey days of Kamakura Period in Japan, this temple was as important as the Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura. This temple was built as a remembrance to victims of the wars between the ancient Japan and the Mongolian invaders.
This temple is located in the famous Kamakura Kaido, a narrow street between Kamakura and Kita Kamakura. On Kamakura Kaido, many temples are located.
In the sprawling temple precincts there are many temples, shrines, buildings and Kannon statues.
Hope you get a chance to visit this temple and enjoy it.

Cherry in Japan: Kita-Kamakura; and eating at places in Tokyo and Kanagawa
Sorry, I’m really awkward in front of the camera.
I went to a café about 10 minutes away from Kobuchi station.
I then went to Kita-Kamakura during the hydrangea season in June. I found some poor squirrels and hassled them by stalking them; which I also do to some poor baby birds.
I also ventured around Tokyo and Kanagawa with a friend, trying out either some completely vegan places or places with vegan options.
On the 7th of July, it was Tanabata. One version of the story goes that there were two lovers that could only meet on the 7th due to an agreement and the woman’s father being a controlling arse. She used to weave beautiful cloths but fell lonely, so she was introduced to her husband, instantly fell in love but then became so wrapped up in her husband that she wasn’t productive in her weaving. As a result, she was only allowed to see her husband once a year. The magpies make a bridge for them to cross and meet each other, but if it rains on the 7th of July, it means that something happened and they couldn’t meet for some reason.
The story is adapted from the Chinese folklore ‘The weaver girl and the cowherd’. There are festivals, a famous one in Sendai and one in Hiratsuka. This year’s festival was on the 8th, 9th, and 10th of this month, in Hiratsuka. I went to it in my first year in Japan and it’s incredible. I haven’t been able to go to one since because I now work when it’s on but I highly recommend it. Usually people write wishes on the pieces of paper, which they attach to bamboo.

Kamakura Engaku-ji Temple - Kanagawa - 円覚寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Kanagawa Kamakura Engaku-ji Temple - 円覚寺 - 4K Ultra HD : Like Hokokuji, Engakuji is not your average temple, and it is actually ranked as the second most important Zen Buddhist temple in Japan. Founded in 1282 by a Chinese Zen monk at the request of Hojo Tokimune (then ruler of Japan), Engakuji is in fact more like a closed village temple than an actual temple.
Indeed Engakuji features not only seven main buildings including the Sanmon (山門) as the main gate, but also a main hall or Butsu-den (仏殿), Shari-Den a reliquary hall (舎利殿), Butsunichia-an (仏日庵) or the burial site of Hojo Tokimune, Obai-In (黄梅院) a small temple containing a statue of Kannon, Ogane (大鐘) a 2.5m high bell as well, Mu (無) the grave of of film director Yasujirō Ozu and the private lodgings of many priests.
The “Japanese Village” atmosphere, with its many ponds, the cafe and restaurant make Engakuji one of the most interesting places to visit in Kamakura by a long shot!

Every year in the summer they have a festival in Kurihama Beach to celebrate Commodore Perry's visit to Japan which opened the Japanese economy to more global trade. It is said that the men from his ship rowed smaller boats in to the Kurihama area and set up camp.
飯山観音 - Iiyama Kannon. Atsugi, Kanagawa Japan
飯山観音 - Iiyama Kannon is an 800 year old Koyasan Shingon sect Buddhist temple located in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Popular in the Kamakura period, this temple was a centre for all embracing studies linking the Shingon sect with the Tendai, Ritsu and Zen sects.
The main hall of the temple was reconstructed in the early Edo period (1600-1868). It enshrines a bronze Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu statue that dates back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
Young people looking for a life partner come to the temple to pray to Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu that the Buddhist god will help them to find a partner.

Matsuri street parade in Kagurazaka Tokyo
There are many festivals happening thoroughout Japan all throughout the year. Summer festivals are particularly numerous and colorfull. As Tokyo is a large city, instead of having just one place where the entire city could celebrate, every neighbourhood has its own spot where people gather and have a good time. This recording was made in a part of Tokyo called Kagurazaka, for Matsuri festival.
