Hocking Canal Lock 19 Park: Transportation History in a Small Geographic Area
The Hocking Canal Lock 19 Roadside Park (also known as the Johnny Appleseed Roadside Park) is located on Haydenville Road just west of Nelsonville near the Hocking and Athens County line. For nearly 180 years, and well over 200 years if the Hocking River is included, this valley was the main transportation artery for the region. This video highlights the early years prior to statehood when the only practical transportation available utilized the Hocking River (eventually flowing into the Ohio River), the Hocking Canal, the Hocking Valley Railway, and later US Highway Route 33 that passed next to the lock until 2013 when the Nelsonville bypass opened.

Rock Mill Best Photograph Location in Ohio
Restored 1824 Rock Mill with 26' Wooden Water Wheel located on the Gorge of the Hocking River Headwaters.
Rock Mill was built in 1824. The restoration of the 26' wooden waterwheel has been designed and engineered to be the authentic original 26' wooden waterwheel. This is the largest wooden waterwheel that is fully functioning in the United States. It is constructed with white oak and weighs 10 tons. The shaft powered by the wheel weighs 5,700 pounds. Amazing Stuff ! ! ! The fore bay holds 1000 gallons of water. The builders precisely determined the amount of water that is required for the drop to hit the wooden buckets so that it will run successfully as it did back when the original wheel powered the mill. The historical documents of Rock Mill discloses the mill's production of 300 pounds of flour per hour. At that time, they used two sets of mill stones. The restored mill stones will be in the same position as their counter parts in the very near future. The mill stones were found in the lowest level of Rock Mill. Above the stones you can find leather artifacts on the wall that were used to hold the miller's tools. Artifacts can also be inspected in the sandstone shelf in the river. Here you can observe the hand carved evidence of the original sawmill structure as well as where the woolen mill equipment stood in the river cleaning the wool.
Water is the primary reason that Rock Mill was established. Rock Mill stands 100' above the black hand sandstone gorge. The gorge is magnificent because it has been carved by the elements for 300 million years. The reason the outcroppings still exist today surrounding the incised gorge area is due to the impermeable black hand sandstone that is only found through a small portion of southeastern Ohio. Rock Mill's water source is the headwaters of the Hocking River. Immediately in front of the mill site there is a 14' high waterfall that drops into a 25' water pit. These remarkable landforms that exist here around Rock Mill are the same impermeable sandstone that has carved and shaped the spectacular caves, ravines and outcropped gorges at Hocking Hills State Park near Logan, Ohio. The impressive geological black hand sandstone outcroppings in this small portion of the world is the success of Rock Mill's continued existence. The cliffs are seen throughout the gorge but also in the lower two levels of the mill. Rock Mill was constructed in 1824 on these durable cliffs that have been here for hundreds of thousands of years and will continue to be here for hundreds of thousands of years. Rock Mill has 6 & 1/2 levels and stands 100' from the bottom of the waterwheel to the peak of the roof. The mill has 35+ windows and at least 7 doors. Between the outcroppings and the sizeable mill, the view is imposing.
The 1824 construction was done with keen engineering skills. The miller was enamored by the dependable water source. One obstacle that had to be addressed was the head race. As remarkable as it sounds, they solved that problem by hand carving a 30' long, 18' deep and 3' wide rock race that directed the water flow to a wooden flume that powered their waterwheel. Today's current historians, contractors and engineers all knew too well that this uniquely created head race had to be saved and incorporated into the historical restoration of Rock Mill. The stone-carved head race remains as it did for the pioneers and continues to serve Rock Mill's water source today.
The historic value of Rock Mill only enhances the beauty of this rare scenery with the panoramic view of the waterfall, waterfall pit, outcroppings along the gorge, cliff swallows flying into their crevices creating there mud nests and the covered bridge. If you have the opportunity to visit Rock Mill you will be taking numerous photographs and experience Ohio's most spectacular, panoramic landscape.
Steam in the Hocking Valley: Hocking Valley Scenic Railway's #3
At 11 a.m. on November 4th, 2018 the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway's steam locomotive number 3, pulled its third train to eastern Logan of the weekend. This weekend marked the first appearance of number 3 in three years to the rails. Constructed in 1869, this road bed was built for the Columbus & Hocking Valley RR (later Columbus, Hocking Valley & Toledo, then Hocking Valley Railway, finally to Chesapeake & Ohio in 1930) to access the coalfields of Nelsonville. Seeing steam back on these rails was very special, especially after three years of no service. This locomotive is reportedly the only standard gauge steam locomotive in operating condition in Ohio. Though nothing remains of the rolling stock or locomotives of the Hocking Valley Railway days, the scenic railway still paints their stock in similar fashion and name. Remarkable to think there was a time several steam locomotives per day passed by this exact location this video was shot at. Let alone the decades steam and rail ruled the United States.

Serpent Mound ~ The Largest And Finest Effigy Mound In The USA
Truly a site to behold, the Great Serpent Mound in southwest Ohio is the worlds largest serpentine effigy mound yet discovered. Writhing in a seemingly effortless way, the mound winds through trees on a cliff overlooking the Brush Creek valley of Adams County.
The Great Serpent Mound of southwest Ohio averages about 1330 feet in length and 3 feet in height. Representing an unwinding serpent, the mound is sheathed in mystery and controversy. The serpent is thought by most to be about to swallow an egg. However many theories abound suggesting various interpretations. For instance some think it may represent an eclipse.
The mysteries don't stop there. The very ground where the mound rests is also of interest to archeology. Seemingly full of cave-like or hollow structures, it is thought that perhaps there may be more to this serpent resting underground.
Conical mounds found nearby contained burials and implements that are characteristic of the prehistoric Adena people (800 BC-AD 100). Due to very acidic soil and predominant rainfall, many cave like structures reside underground. It is presumed that the Adena people may have resided in the caves. If true, there could be a treasure trove of artifacts waiting to be discovered.
In 1933 W.H. Bucher published an account of the area calling it a cryptovolcanic structure. Bucher saw similarities in the land forms at the Serpent Mound to barely recognizable volcanic upheavals in Germany. However, no volcanic materials have been found there.
In 1947 R.D. Dietz in Science magazine suggested that a better name to describe the land features was cryptoexplosion—the folded and faulted beds of landforms from different geologic eras exposed from the impact of meteors. There is a great appeal to Dietz' theory even if the geology does not completely support it; there is no meteoric metal here.
There are serious suggestions that the serpent is intimately connected with the heavens. Several writers have suggested that the serpent is a model of the constellation we call the Little Dipper, its tail coiled about the north star. It is tempting to believe that the Indians knew of the meteor's explosion into the earth, and they built the mound to honor that event.
Bucher's theory suggests a different tern of events. The explosion came from within the earth from the incredible pressure of accumulated but repressed energies, trapped, blocked, but finally exploding upward as gas forcing its way to be released through the body of the earth toward the sky above. If there was ever a collective earth--memory recognizing the release of what the Hindus call Kundalini, this is it.
