Today we are in Gore, which is the brown trout capital of New Zealand AND the country music capital of New Zealand. Yeehah! But after checking out some of the architectural marvels of the town, we hit the Hokonui Moonshine Museum in Gore – probably the most unique museum in New Zealand we are seeing so far.
The museum is dedicated to how pioneers used to distil whisky illegally in the Hokonui Hills surrounding Gore. It’s super cheap to get in, around NZ$5, so why not? We learn about the Scottish settlers packing distillery kits in their luggage for New Zealand and bringing their whisky culture to New Zealand.
The museum goes through the prohibition period, hilarious stories of people getting caught by police and so on in interactive displays to listen and look at. The museum emerges into the Gore Historical Museum, a mini museum with Gore artefacts which is free to wander.
At the end of our visit to the Hokonui Moonshine Museum, we get to actually taste two varieties of the Hokonui Moonshine Whisky itself!
After that, we head to the St James Theatre, a fancy cinema in Gore with a vintage art deco style and really cool place to watch a movie in Gore.
So what do you think about the Hokonui Moonshine Museum and the St James Theatre? Would you stop by these places and do these activities in Gore? LUK in the comments.

After yesterday, checking out the Moonshine Museum and St James Theatre in Gore, we have found even more things to do in Gore in the Southland region of New Zealand! Join us for the Eastern Southland Gallery and Dolamore Park in Gore!
This morning, we pop into the Eastern Southland Gallery, an art gallery in Gore and a free thing to do in Gore! The Eastern Southland Art Gallery is set in a historic library and really has a huge offering of art from all over the world. This New Zealand art gallery is pretty huge. We did not expect this in such a quiet corner of New Zealand!
After the art gallery, we head back to Dolamore Park which is where we have been camping for the last couple of days while in Gore. Dolamore Park has cheap powered sites for campervans, as well as a wealth of hikes in Gore and even mountain biking trails in Gore. We go check out one of the Dolamore Park walks that goes through the forest foothills of the Hokonui Hills. Dolarmore Park is well worth checking out for some walks in Gore.
So what do you think of the city of Gore? Would you visit the Eastern Art Gallery or check out Dolamore Park in Gore? LUK in the comments!

Hokonui moonshine whiskey blues by Chris Priestley @ the 2016 Auckland Folk Festival
Phil Garland, seated next to Chris had just sung his own song, 'The Hokonui Hills' from the 1984 Springtime In The Mountains CD, also on Southern Odysseyalbum from 2007, which also told of the 1902-1954 illegal production of this superior whisky. It became legal in 1954 when prohibition was lifted. The bottle on the stage is a bottle of legal Hokonui purchased from the Hokonui museum in Gore.
More about the Chris's song, Hokonui Hills on his Unsung Heroes cd is here -
Chris is on facebook (chrisjpriestley) for orders of this and his second cd on New Zealanders from the past.
