Best place to eat in Kathmandu || Honacha || hole in wall restaurant in nepal
This hole in wall eatery is a old restaurant, only serving newari food.you must try it outOne of Kathmandu's oldest existing eatery serves authentic Newari fare.In the heart of Patan Darbar Square behind the majestic edifice of Krishna Mandir you will come across a narrow alley. As in most of Patan, the streets are littered with colourful shops displaying silver jewelry and handicrafts. Unexpectedly you will find a low doorway that leads you through a dark and drab passage to Honacha, one of the most popular eateries in the city. It is a mix of an old time European bar, a pub, and restaurant with roots deep into Nepali history.
There were no restaurants at all before the late 1940s, except bhattis like these and they too were few and far between. Farmers travelling from the outskirts of Kathmandu to sell their produce lingered around at these eateries, drinking aila or jaand (a milder and thicker brew), and tasty snacks, before making the long walk back home. They formed the bulk of Honacha’s customers. But it was not unusual for rich merchants or young aristocrats to drop in surreptitiously for a few sips of the forbidden brew and romantic forays.
The setting has hardly changed: the old brick walls and the flooring look ancient and the menu we are told has remained constant. Once you enter the big room the focus shifts to the formidable woman in the middle who is the director, manager, chef, and cashier all rolled in one.
On the large round iron tawa straddling the centre of the room the chef is cooking baras, an essential preparation in any Newari household, especially during festive occasions and a signature dish at Honacha. It is made out of lentil generally of the dark variety (moong and mas), soaked overnight, crushed and pounded, mixed with masala which varies in every household and minutely sliced fresh herbs before being shaped into round, flat roti, ready to be lightly fried in mustard oil. It is fragrant and tasty on its own but can be topped with fried egg sunny side up, or mince meat and some hot chutney. Alu tarkari is another favourite among locals and bideshis alike. The soft and melting potato curry is piled high on another large tawa and is served in small steel plates.
Honacha in Patan is famed for its Newar delicacies, declared the best by many, and we sit in one of its two iterations. Tucked away on the northern edge of Patan Durbar, next to the Bhimsen Temple, this Honacha sits a stone’s throw away from its sister restaurant, also called Honacha, less than 20 metres away—opposite the Krishna Mandir. Although there is dispute on which of these two eateries came first, they have been operated by the same family of Byanjankars for at least 60-70 years.
Ducking in through a leaning doorway, squeezed through the congested kitchen and into our seats, this bunker-like restaurant is obviously popular. Sitting next to fellow enthused eaters, the order-to-eat process speaks to decades of precision.
First comes a steel tumbler of cloudy chyang and a small bottle of raksi. The raksi is strong, not violent; the chyang is sweet with a bit of fizz. Having just barely sipped our tipple, tin plates start appearing.
How to get there: Honacha is located rigth behind Krishna Mandir at Patan Darbar Square.

Nighttime Sidestreet Navigating in Thamel, Nepal
Shot from the safety of a motorcycle parking lot on a Thamel street corner. The Thamel neighborhood is the hub of tourist activity in Kathmandu, Nepal. Managing to survive one block on the main road is a serious feat, so we took to the side streets on our hunt for a hole-in-the-wall serving cheap, authentic Nepali food.

Mysterious Sky Cave Of Mustang,NEPAL [ ONE OF THE MYSTERIOUS PLACE OF NEPAL ]
#video_credit_goes_to_Narbhu
Mustang Caves or Sky Caves of Nepal are a collection of some 10,000 man-made caves dug into the sides of valleys in the Mustang District of Nepal.[1][2] Several groups of archaeologists and researchers have explored these stacked caves and found partially mummified human bodies and skeletons that are at least 2,000–3,000 years old.[3] Explorations of these caves by conservators and archaeologists have also led to the discovery of valuable Buddhist paintings, sculptures, manuscripts and numerous artifacts belonging to the 12th to 14th century.[4][5] The caves lie on the steep valley walls near the Kali Gandaki River in Upper Mustang. Research groups have continued to investigate these caves, but no one has yet understood who built the caves and why were they built.

I have been coming to Kathmandu for many years so I have dined at most of the famous restaurants, especially in Thamel. On this trip I started venturing out to try some new cheap places. I've already got some new favorites including Western Tandoori and Naan House, Dudh Sagar, Classic Momo Express, along with old favorites like BK's. On a couple of occasions I shared a table at Western Tandoori with other travellers that had eaten there multiple times on the same trip. With the recent passing of Anthony Bourdain, I can't help but think that eating at hole in the wall or humble places didn't have the wide acceptable exposure until Mr. Bourdain came along and showed us it was OK. His shows that featured eating at a roadside restaurant in Rajasthan, or street food in Kerela or some other far flung place was not only cool but not as risky as one might think. I ate sometimes on multiple occasions at the places featured in this video and I never got sick. Hope you enjoy the video. Send me some feedback if you want to see more videos like this. So many people now are doing food videos on YouTube that I think it's a bit of saturated topic but hopefully my take is maybe a little bit different and even amusing.
Thanks again! If you would like to support my travels and video creation and at the same time get it on some exclusive content and chat consider becoming a patron. Visit my Patreon page for more details:

नेपालको एक मात्र झ्याल || DESHEYAMARU JHYAA देशेय मरु झ्या: || NARDEVI, KATHMANDU NEPAL
One of the magnificent wooden window in a simple house at Nardevi known as “Deshemaru Jhya”.
The literal translation of “Deshemaru Jhya” is “only once piece in the whole country” and as the name says the window in the house of Yetkha is only of its kind in the whole country. It is really interesting as well as mysterious to see a wonderful piece of art in a normal looking house. Even before the rebuilding of this house in a modern style, it was just an ordinary Newar house. Therefore, some local people even claim that the way of saying “Deshemaru” was a sarcastic way of telling “showoff”.
Actually this window is a blind window without opening and this type of window is mostly used in the first floor of the Newar house, known as “Tikki Jhyaa”. Normally these types of windows are plain-looking with the lattices so that it gives privacy in the room refraining from outsiders to look inside while from inside through the holes the outside view is possible. Mostly the windows in the second floors of traditional houses are richer and lavishly decorated and known as “Saa Jhyaa” with the open access. In contrast to the normal Tiki Jhyaa this one is designed with multiple frames – one overlapping the other with a total of eleven frames and in the center is lattice, providing the three-dimensional look.
While much information is not available regarding its origin or how the plain-looking house ended up having such an amazing art. Even many tourists come to have a look at this outstanding piece of art, according to the shopkeeper in the house Rico Sthapit as is featured in the tourist guidebook. But neither he nor the owner of the house has much details regarding the window.
In the window there is a piece of wooden plate with some text and number written as Yet Tor Nambar (7)9 and according to Prof. Kashinath Tamot it means Yetakhaatolayaa 79 lyaayaachhen – 79 house number of Yetkhaa. It was the census of the houses done during the Rana time.
This window not only tells the story of the glorious past but also the present – the state of heritage conservation of Nepal. Despite being an example of excellent craftsmanship, it is not in a proper condition now. The window is in a concrete house where it’s clamped with the cement while wooden pieces are in the phase of deterioration. The room with that window is now leased by a tuition institute. Neither the owner of the house nor the government seems to be giving attention to the famed window.
According to some locals, the government wanted to take that window when the house owner was rebuilding the house. But the owner opposed and in order to avoid the Department of Archeology claiming the window, the owner built the house with the window hanging and then built the wall over it. If the authorities responsible had managed to pursue the house owner to build the house in a traditional manner, the fate of the window would have been different. In addition to that we must also consider the fact that heritage conservation then was mostly guided by the objects and antiquities and they had not embraced the holistic way of heritage conservation. But the irony is almost decades later the mindset of the authorities does not seem to change.
It is clear that nothing has been done for conservation of the “Deshyamaru Jhyaa” but everyone of us carry it in our Nepali passport page number 25. (COURTESY: SETOPATI)
