WA whiskey among world’s best
Whiskey is normally associated with ghosts, grizzled old men and ancient castles shrouded in fog.
But now a few young guys, unburdened by the spirits of dead orphans, have been changing the game and distilling their own delicious drams all the way over here in sunny Perth.
The folk at Whipper Snapper Distillery are taking advantage of WA’s unique resources to create spirits that are being celebrated the world over.
Tim Hosken, production engineer and distiller at Whipper Snapper, says their approach is about “taking the best of what we’ve got in Perth, so our natural grains that we have, our climate, and using those factors to get really unique but just top-shelf whiskeys”.
In fact, it increasingly seems that WA is an ideal part of the world in which to be making spirits, as evidenced by the emergence of multiple craft distilleries in the last few years.
In the city, Whipper Snapper is experimenting with WA grains sourced direct from farmers in our Wheatbelt. Not far away, Mark Harris of Sin Gin is making excellent use of the native botanical lemon myrtle.
A little further out from the city you’ll find Old Young’s and the Great Northern Distillery in the Swan Valley.
Down south, Limeburners Distillery in Margaret River are using quandongs to flavour their gin. In Wilyabrup, The Grove Distillery is making organic absinthe out of Aussie grains.
If you were to head north, you’d find Illegal Tender Rum Co in Dongarra. Their name refers to a time in Australian history when rum was our unofficial currency, and their spirits are spiced using indigenous plants including Kakadu plum, lemon myrtle, quandong, wild rosella and wattleseed. Some spirits are even aged in ex-Margaret River wine barrels.
Hoochery in Kununurra promises “bloody good dinky-di Kimberley Spirit to enjoy around the table”.
Sugar cane growing in the Ord River Valley is harvested and turned into Canefire by the Kimberley Rum Company. Matured at the Great Northern Distillery in the Swan Valley, it lacks the harsh taste of other rums made from molasses.
But it’s not just the West Aussie ingredients that make the difference. Tim says that the climate here in Perth helps accelerate the whiskey maturation process. Our warm WA days mean that the processes that create flavours inside an oak barrel occur faster.
This has helped the young distillery find its feet quickly, as well as allowing them to experiment with unique recipes. “Most exciting for us now is that, essentially every year from now, we have a new style of whiskey coming out, which will be great.”
Whipper Snapper’s focus on West Aussie assets has helped them become the toast of many international towns. Their very first whiskey, the Upshot, has taken out the prize for Best International Corn Whiskey at the American Distilling Institute as well as the Best Australian Corn Whiskey at the World Whiskey Awards.
Which we think is pretty neat.

Would you jump in? - Lake Argyle to Kununurra. Ep.53
Lake Argyle via Kununurra to Bungle Bungles????????????
After crossing the WA border???? we headed straight down to Lake Argyle for a few nights. We initially set up at the free camp near the spill way. We then drove into Lake Argyle Resort to look into cruises???? and availability. Hearing such great things about the sunset cruise, we decided to splash out and book ourselves some seats.????
We had a great two days relaxing at the spillway camp, recharging our batteries and laying about. On the third day, we packed up early and headed into the Lake Argyle Resort????. All the staff were very nice and let us check in at 9am. We made use of all the facilities, doing some washing and relaxing in the pool, all before our sunset cruise later that afternoon. ????
It was a brilliant few hours at on the Lake, learning about it and seeing different points of interest???? (see previous post for sunset cruise photos). After the cruise, we treated ourselves to dinner and drinks at the bar. Sitting back, sipping down a coldy???? while listening to the live entertainment. You can see why people love staying here.
Our next destination was into Kununurra, to top up with fresh fruit and veggies!???? Unfortunately for us we didn’t realize alot of the town is shut on Sundays, so very little was open. We chose to go up the road to camp and return the next day. Our campsite of choice was ‘Buttons Crossing’ for the night. It was a nice peaceful place, on the edge of a sandy river. Just have to be careful as the river was croccy ????
The next day we drove over the iconic Ivanhoe water crossing and got a few pictures????. Then detouring up the road to check out the Hoochery Distillery. After a few samples and a light lunch we headed back into Kununurra to grab some groceries and refill our gas. We camped at a free camp about 30km out of town, as we had planned to detour down⬇️ to the Bungles Bungles for a look.
We set up camp at the Spring Creek Rest area which is 1km south of the Bungle Bungles intersection. Day tripping it in to visit the Domes, Cathedral gorge and Echidna Chasm. The 50km dirt road from the intersection into the Information centre was horrendous????. It took us 90 minutes each way and it was in a terrible condition.
The next day we made our way up to Cockburn rest area for an overnight stop???? before starting the infamous Gibb River Road the following day.

In the middle of my busy working life in Sydney, I've decided to take a short break to Whitsunday and The Great Barrier Reef ????. Getting close and personal with Magpie Geese.
Check out this big mob of Magpie Geese feeding off corn stubble just out of Kununurra in Western Australia. Recently filmed between the famous Hoochery Rum Distillery and Sandalwood factory Cafe, I highly recommend waking up at sunrise to check them out for yourself.
Magpie Geese are widespread in Northern Australia, where they may congregate in huge flocks, often comprising of thousands of birds.
I think I'm lucky to have a drone in one piece after this project.
Enjoy ????
