Supporting Mame in Manchester
Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester is continuing its run of revivals of musicals with the Jerry Herman show Mame, starring Tracie Bennett, Tim Flavin and Harriet Thorpe.
During the Manchester run, BTG editor David Chadderton sat in the theatre with Harriet—well known to TV audiences for her comedy roles such as Carole The Brittas Empire and Fleur in Absolutely Fabulous, but with stage musical credits including Mamma Mia and Wicked—and spoke about her role as Mame’s bitchy actress friend Vera in the show, about working at Hope Mill and about her background in TV comedy and theatre.
Mame runs at Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester from 28 September until 9 November 2019. It can also be seen at Royal and Derngate Theatre in Northampton from 7 to 11 January and Salisbury Playhouse from 21 to 25 January 2020.

The Permanent Way by David Hare
David Hare’s award-winning play roars to life in a provocative new site-specific staging performed in The Vaults, London’s alternative subterranean venue beneath Waterloo Station.
“What happened would simply not have happened under British Rail. It wouldn’t have happened. Not in the British Rail days.”
Revelatory, witty, and moving, The Permanent Way is an astonishing interrogation of the chaos arising from the botched privatisation of Britain’s railways. Told through the first-hand accounts of those involved at every level, from passengers to Civil Service mandarins, this extraordinary verbatim piece asks challenging questions of responsibility and governmental mismanagement. Have we learned anything from recent history?
This first London revival since the play's critically acclaimed run at the National Theatre is directed by Alexander Lass, whose recent credits include 46 Beacon (Trafalgar Studios) and No Man's Land (West End).
“A searing piece of documentary theatre”
The Evening Standard
“Hare has made a serious, provocative, dramatically gripping contribution to an argument of urgent interest to us all”
The Times
“This intricately detailed study of a fatal privatisation is that very rare thing: a vitally necessary piece of theatre”
Michael Billington, The Guardian

Exploring Abandoned Mansion
I have been to Horncliff Mansion before but never took my camera but this time me and a couple of friends travelled up to Edenfield, Lancashire to document this fantastic place and it was built in 1869 by a famous mill owner called Henry Hardman. It took three visits to record my exploring of this abandoned mansion which was lying in a derelict state due to squatters some years back and vandals. We also explored the full gardens and grounds which is home to an abandoned jaguar graveyard its all very strange so watch and be as puzzled as me

Joseph Houston on the rapid rise of Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre
In November 2015, a new fringe theatre opened up in Ancoats, Manchester with the ambition of presenting full-scale commercial productions of musicals.
Created by musical theatre performers Joseph Houston and William Whelton, Hope Mill Theatre has since won multiple local and national awards, transferred productions to London and been named in The Stage 100, a list of the most influential people in the whole of UK theatre from The Stage newspaper.
In the middle of January 2018, during auditions for Spring Awakening, one of three major musical productions so far announced by Hope Mill Theatre for this year, BTG editor David Chadderton spoke to Joe about the creation, ideals and future plans of this remarkably successful new venue.
The Sound of Music UK Tour extended look
An extended look at Bill Kenwright's new production of The Sound of Music UK tour 2015.
For tickets visit
One of the greatest musicals of all time returns to the stage in a magnificent new production to enchant and enthral the young and the young at heart.
Based on Baroness Maria von Trapp’s 1949 autobiography, this wonderfully lavish new staging of The Sound of Music tells the true story of the world-famous singing family, from their romantic beginnings and search for happiness, to their thrilling escape to freedom as their beloved Austria becomes part of the Third Reich at the start of WWII.
Playing the iconic role of Maria is DANIELLE HOPE, who captured the hearts of the country when she won BBC Television’s Over the Rainbow and made her professional debut as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium. Danielle is joined by Olivier-Award nominated actor STEVEN HOUGHTON, who is well-known for Coronation Street and London’s Burning, who will star as Captain von Trapp.
The Sound of Music features some of the world’s most memorable songs, including ‘Edelweiss’, ‘My Favorite Things’, ‘Do-Re-Mi’, ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain’, ‘So Long, Farewell’ and of course, the title song, ‘The Sound of Music’.
This new production of the classic stage musical coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the film version, the best loved and most successful movie musical in history.

The Travelling Band - Waterfall Live
The Travelling Band, Supporting Arlo Guthrie at The Dancehouse Theatre, Manchester, England. Playing a cover of The Stone Roses 'Waterfall'
'mame' Premiere Aka Mame' First Night (1969)
Colour newsreel item. No titles.
Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London.
Great colour shots of neon lights of Piccadilly Circus in London at night. Several quick shots showing neon billboards outside west end theatres - Rosemary Harris and Paul Rogers in Neil Simon's 'Plaza Suite', John Gielgud in Alan Bennett's 'Forty Years On', 'Two Cities', Danny La Rue, Prince of Wales theatre, Talk of the Town, Warner cinema, several quick cinema billboards - this is great for illustrating late 1960s theatre, cinema and club scene.
Cut to M/S of film star Ginger Rogers in costume as 'Mame', wearing a fabulous tall hat and 1920s fur-trimmed coat. Photographers take pictures of her - could be on stage of Drury Lane theatre. Several more shots of Ginger in costumes from the show, in pre-opening night publicity work for the theatre show. One outfit has transparent, chiffon trousers - wow! Ginger poses astride a huge cut-out moon on the stage.
Exterior of Drury Lane theatre with billboards outside advertising 'Mame'. Shots of the chauffeurs outside the theatre, asleep and chatting to each other. Inside we see front of house staff snoozing in the foyer. Shot of audience applauding in the auditorium, during the first night performance. L/S of Ginger bowing on stage. M/S of actor Roger Moore in the audience with a glamorous woman - his wife, Luisa?
Several shots of people coming down the stairs and into the foyer after the show. Among the first-nighters are Sid James and wife Valerie, Billy Cotton (?) with wife (and daughter?), Liberace with Millicent Martin, Bernard Braden and wife, actress Eunice Gayson, plus a few people unrecognised by this cataloguer. Backstage we see Ginger in heavy stage make-up and a fur-trimmed gown kissing a little boy, probably her co-star in the show and shaking hands with people. Wardrobe girls hold out the train of her long, petticoated gown while Ginger poses with her mother Lela.
Note; apparently the people identified in the synopsis as Billy Cotton and his wife and daughter are in fact the old film stars (and married couple) Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels, with (probably) their daughter Barbara.
