Cascada Cailor - The Horses Waterfall (Borsa, Maramures, Romania)
The Horses Waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Romania, and the highest (90 m), is located at 1,300 m altitude in the north-eastern part of the Rodna Mountains. It can be reached on several routes, but the video, in the first minute of viewing, synthesizes the most preferred version for tourists, namely the chairlift in the resort Borşa Ressort. From the end of the chairlift to the cascade, there are about 2 km, half an hour to go. The waterfall flows over the limestone massif called the Horses Bridge, but between the cascade and the spring, located in a small glacier circle, the water runs through the Horses Canyon, whith 240 m tall and 10 small waterfalls that can only be crossed by climbers. The Waterfall and its name are linked to three legends:
1. A herd of horses that came here coming from the realm of shadows.
2. A horse stud, tucked in here by a fierce bear, has thrown (fallen) to escapet
3. At the last invasion of the Tatars in these places (1717), the Borsa people themselves threw their horses from the rock so that they would not reach the enemies. From the tears of sadness of the Borsa people, who loved their horses, this waterfall formed.
Cascada Cailor [Horses Waterfall] The Tallest in Romania Unedited 2018
English:
The most beautiful waterfall in Eastern Europe, 100 m at sight, but another 150 m through above forest! You can hike to the waterfall by foot (1.5 hours from Borsa Complex), or you can take the chair-lift up to 1400 m and then a nice descending path (30 minutes) till you reach the base of this beautiful waterfall. You should hike back on the opposite slope, and take the upper path (which goes for the Stiol lake): after 20 minutes of walking, you'll see the whole waterfall (through forest and on the wall: a vertical, or nearly vertical, rock exposure. In romanian Cascada Cailor; it is the tallest waterfall in Romania. Specificly it is a series of warterfalls, higher than 100 meters, and water falls down from a cliff to another. According to an ancient legend, the name of the waterfall comes from a fact that occured here centuries ago. It seems that during a storm a herd of horses was cornered by a bear on the brink of the abyss where the waterfall starts. Because of poor visibility and being extremly frightened, the horses jumped in the abyss, thus dying.
Romana:

Behind the scenes:
It took me two days to produce 2-3 hours of video which I edited later and managed to put together some nice pieces to realize a 4 minute video. # 2.5 days alone -2 + 4 C in the morning... just me and the unstoppable wind... I had to carry my tent and about 15 kg of stuff with me all the time up in to the mountains, it was cold and rainy but it was the best experience of my life I should say; and of course I was soaked to the bone while filming under the waterfall... :)
Special Thanks to the nice personal at Hotel Cerbul Complex Borsa!

______________
I started from Prislop Pass, on the road next to the monastery until I reached the red triangle trail sign.
The trek lasts around 2 hours, and most of this time is spent walking on a dusty road, that has spectacular views of Rodnei Mountains. Because this is a starting point for the entire ridge, you`ll get to meet many hikers during the summer months.
From the crossroad the red triangle sign sent me downhill on a trail that descended somewhat abruptly, leaving me questioning my choices of foot ware.
After I started going down I could see the Bad Rock, and within its solid stone wall, a cave. Almost instantly I felt the urge to explore it, and I did. Unfortunately the cave was shallow so there wasn't much exploring to be done, however from the entrance of the cave you get a spectacular view of the trail I came down on.
On the great planes above the waterfall once roamed herds of wild horses, and the legend says that one evening during a thunder storm a bear attacked. The unexpected attack combined with the thunders, sent a herd plunging off the steep cliff to its death. Ever since the locals discovered the carnage, they called this marvel of nature the Horses Waterfall.

Horses waterfall
Located on the northern side of Rodna Mountains, Maramures, near the tourist resort Borsa, Horses’ Falls (Cascada Cailor) is one of the most beautiful cascades in Romania. Situated at an altitude of 1300 meters, the water fall is around 90 meters.
It is a very popular destination, as every year thousands of tourists all over the country and abroad come to see one of the most impressive waterfalls in the Carpathians.
Water from the snow melt and rain falls accumulates in a glacial lake and it swoops from out there to on the steep slope of Piatra Rea Reservation, creating the cascade down into several steps with successive falls from 40 meters to 20 meters and again 40.
Like all the others touristic location, the Horses’ Waterfall has its own legend. They say locals used to take their horses on the meadows near ‘Piatra Rea’, but sometimes the animals were attacked by bears. It seems that during a storm a herd of horses was cornered by a bear on the brink of the abyss where the waterfall commences. Because of the poor visibility and being extremely frightened, the horses jumped into the abyss, thus dying. Since then locals began to use the name Horses’ Waterfall.
The landscape in the area is of ??rare beauty, especially during the summer when the waterfall is truly impressive viewed from below.
Park rangers advise us that summer is the best season for a short trip in the mountains.
