Maramures is one of Europe's best kept secrets, a place where time stands still, a place where rural customs, traditions, and skills (in particular wood sculpting) and, last but not least, human kindness are well preserved.
Close to the Ukrainian border, Maramures covers 3381 sq km of valleys, beatiful villages, hills and mountains (as tall as 2303 m). In this small area can be found 5 UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites (wooden churches), a natural reserve also protected by UNESCO, about 60 villages and small towns, the only narrow gauge industrial steam train still in use in Europe, and many other atractions. Places to visit:
1. Sighetu Marmatiei, with its museums and churches.
2. Vaser Valley, where a unique steam-powered train still runs.
3. The wooden churches protected by UNESCO (Poienile Izei, Ieud-Deal, Budesti-Josani, Desesti and Barsana-Jbar), erected between the 16th and 18th century, in the Maramures gothic style. These churches have been painted hundreds of years ago.
4. The Merry Cemetery in Sapanta, unique in the world, famous for its colourful tombstones with naive paintings describing, in an original and poetic manner, the persons that are buried there as well as scenes from their lives; today a major tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
5. The tallest wooden church in the world (78 m high, erected in Sapanta, between 1995-2003).
6. The Pietrosu Rodnei Natural Reserve, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (listed in 1980, although it was estabilished in 1932), part of the Rodna Mountains National Park; the reserve protects plants and animals such as edelweiss, gentians, marmots, chamois etc.
7. The Maramures Mountains Natural Park, the biggest and wildest natural park in Romania, covering 1480 sq km; the park protects 1260 plant species, bears, wolves, lynxes etc.
8. Breb Village, adopted by the HMS Prince of Wales (who bought here three old wooden houses).
9. Sarbi Village, which hosts a group of water-powered machines (watermills, thresher, alcohol distilleries, whirlpools).
10. Budesti Village, the best-preserved traditional Maramures settlement.

Cascada Cailor - The Horses Waterfall (Borsa, Maramures, Romania)
Cascada Cailor, una din cele mai frumoase cascade ale României, dar și cea mai înaltă (90 m), se găsește la 1.300 m altitudine în partea nord-estică a Munților Rodnei. Se poate ajunge la ea pe mai multe trasee, dar videoclipul, în primul minut de vizionare, sintetizează varianta cea mai agreată de turiști și anume cu telescaunul din Borșa Stațiune. De la capătul telescaunului, până la cascadă, mai sunt circa 2 km care se pot parcurge în jumătate de oră. Cascada se revarsă peste masivul calcaros numit Podul Cailor, dar între cascadă și izvor, situat într-un mic circ glaciar, apa curge prin Canionul Cailor care, la rândul său, are 240 m înălțime și 10 mici cascade ce pot fi parcurse numai de alpiniști. De Cascada Cailor și de numele său sunt legate trei legende:
1. O herghelie de cai care a ajuns aici venind de pe tarâmul celălalt.
2. O herghelie de cai, încolțită aici de un urs fioros, s-a aruncat (a căzut) ca să scape de acesta
3. La ultima năvălire a tătarilor pe aceste locuri (anul 1717), borșenii înșiși și-au aruncat cai de pe stâncă pentru-ca aceștia să nu ajungă în mâna dușmanilor. Din lacrimile de tristețe a borșenilor, care își iubeau mult caii, s-a format cascada.
The Horses Waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Romania, and the highest (90 m), is located at 1,300 m altitude in the north-eastern part of the Rodna Mountains. It can be reached on several routes, but the video, in the first minute of viewing, synthesizes the most preferred version for tourists, namely the chairlift in the resort Borşa Ressort. From the end of the chairlift to the cascade, there are about 2 km, half an hour to go. The waterfall flows over the limestone massif called the Horses Bridge, but between the cascade and the spring, located in a small glacier circle, the water runs through the Horses Canyon, whith 240 m tall and 10 small waterfalls that can only be crossed by climbers. The Waterfall and its name are linked to three legends:
1. A herd of horses that came here coming from the realm of shadows.
2. A horse stud, tucked in here by a fierce bear, has thrown (fallen) to escapet
3. At the last invasion of the Tatars in these places (1717), the Borsa people themselves threw their horses from the rock so that they would not reach the enemies. From the tears of sadness of the Borsa people, who loved their horses, this waterfall formed.
Lacul IEZER Lake (Sadova, Bucovina, Romania)

The Iezer is a mountain lake located in Obcina Feredeului Mountains and belongs to Sadova village (Suceava County, Bucovina). Iezer Lake and the little Bolatau Lake, located about 2 km to north, are formed by sliding mountainside. These are probably the oldest natural barrage lakes in Romania (400-500 years, much older than the famous Red Lake from Hăşmaş Mountains. Iezer Lake was first mentioned in documents in 1594. The recreation area Iezer Lake was opened with great fanfare in May 2016. In 1999 in this lake was fishing a trout of 7.8 kg and 86 cm, national record. The lake has an area of about 1.5 ha, an average depth of 7 m and a maximum depth of 12m.
Iezerul este un lac montan situat în Masivul Obcina Feredeului şi aparţine comunei Sadova (jud. Suceava). Lacul Iezer, împreună cu micul lac Bolătău situat spre nord la circa 2 Km, s-au format prin alunecarea versantului muntelui. Acestea sunt probabil cele mai vechi (400-500 ani) lacuri de baraj natural din ţară, mult mai vechi decât vestitul Lac Roşu din Munţii Hăşmaş. Lacul Iezer a fost menţionat prima dată în documente în anul 1594. Zona de agrement Lacul Iezer a fost inaugurată cu mare fast în luna mai 2016. În anul 1999, din acest lac a fost pescuit un păstrăv de 7,8 kg şi 86 cm, record naţional.
