Monni Travels Magnetic Island
Topless cars, koalas, taking over catermerans, local legends and sensational nature displays, are what its all about in this episode of Monni Travels Magnetic Island.
The magic of the wander proves itself time and time again in the simple notion of ‘one foot in front of the other.’
On this day, myself and my filmer Marcial Sommer use no maps (ish), no money and no plan to move forward and discover the gems of Magnetic.
We utilise the nature, the local legends and the wanderers that we meet along the way to discover its beautiful bays, thrills and wildlife.

We received a terrific email today (September 25, 2010) from Lisa King, our former colleague in the University of Hawaii Sea Grant program. Lisa is finishing up her PhD degree in Tourism at James Cook University in Townsville, Australia. She kindly included these photos of the Orpheus Island Research Station. OIRS is a modern, well equipped marine science field station which lies in close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. It is administered by James Cook University and hosts visiting students, researchers, and occasional tourists.
From Lisa:
Hi Gerry,
Here are some pictures I took two weeks ago at Orpheus research station. I stayed with my friend who is working at the research station for eight nights. Nice slow pace island. May go back [soon] to assist them with the education programs.
The clam garden is still there and is a small attraction for the few yachties that visit the island and the educational groups that come to use the facilities. Unfortunately I didn't take any low tide pics of the clams... but can get you some in the future if needed.
There is much more infrastructure, i.e. research accommodation, student dorm accommodation, work areas and sheds, boat areas, but these are the best pics...
Off to the Greek Islands!
Cheers, Lisa
And here's another side of Orpheus Island -- the very comfortably appointed Orpheus Island Resort Hotel!

Wir waren auf Magnetic Island, es war wie immer sehr beeindruckend und hat superviel Spass gemacht :)
Australian Koala in the Wild. National Park. Radical Bay, Magnetic Island, Australia. Drone Footage
Koalas are not bears, but MARSUPIALS, which means that their young are born immature & they develop further in the safety of a pouch. There is a koala population on Magnetic Island. Most of the island is a national park and there are few threats to the slow Australian marsupial there. Its likely you'll see a koala on the walk to Radical Bay, where the land is privately owned but no current development is occurring. I flew my drone, a DJI Phantom 3 Standard to capture the beauty of the Bay.
The Strand in Townsville
We made it to Townsville at the end of our Outback Queensland Road Trip.
And you can't make the trip to Townsville without heading down to hang out at The Strand.
Although there are still a few works going on around the place it still is a great place to walk around.
And as you can see, the weather was awesome for us today!
Or you can check out what else I have been up to here....
