Natural Michigan Account administer Henry Roeters shows Founder Patrick Stepanek around the farthest North you can travel in Michigan. The rock covered beaches grew lichen of all kinds of colors. From one rock to the next, the entire ecosystem of lichen covers the entire beach.
When hiking it is important to remember to take regular water breaks. We recommend taking a water break every 15 minutes or so because this is how long it takes your body to digest a small amount of water. Chugging all the water in your pack will not hydrate your body and will waste the majority of it.
If you live in Michigan and want to see a particular trail covered on video, DM @patrickstepanek on Instagram or reach out to us at naturalmichiganadventures@gmail.com
The video we will upload following this one shows Patrick and Henry jumping off a cliff into the water. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our community in Michigan. The Michigan community is the second largest amongst Natural, trailing only Ohio, Patrick Stepanek's home state!

SUP Touring Lake Superior - Stand Up Paddle Boarding Copper Harbor Area Keweenaw Peninsula Michigan
Keweenaw Peninsula is the most northern part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula extending up into the cold waters of Lake Superior. Copper Harbor is near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Keweenaw Penninsula was the site of the first copper boom in the United States.
Most of the paddling was done north of Copper Harbor. The majority of this footage was taken around Horseshoe Harbor.
Horseshoe Harbor is owned by the Nature Conservancy. It has a rocky beach and a few scenic rock stacks. Land access is via a 1/2 mile foot trail. No camping is allowed.
Conditions were often windy and paddling upwind was a chore. The weather can change is a minute and small storms can appear out of nowhere.
South of Copper Harbor is an even more scenic rocky coastline all the way down to Agate Harbor. Unfortunately the land from Agate to Copper Harbor is private and there is no public access. It has to be paddled in one 7 mile stretch. This part of the coastline has a lot of rock outcropping and can be dangerous. In particular there is a spot called the Devil's Washtub that can only be approached in calm seas. On this trip I never paddled south of Copper Harbor. The stretch of coastline from Agate to Copper Harbor can be done but takes some planning and decent weather.

Horseshoe Bay Part One
the new and most disappointing extension on the Northern end of US 41 - into the pristine virgin Keweenaw Peninsula in Upper Michigan - it saddens me to see this wilderness sold off and open to those who want to destroy it with hunting and vacation homes - displacing the bears and big cats ---- this is the road that leads to the tip of the peninsula - at the 8:15 mark - I notice the road is washed out and I can not go any further ( the washout was 18 to 24 inches deep ) near the end of the video - you see a sign on the right - this two track leads to Horseshoe Bay - see that in the next video

We go for a drive from Copper Harbor to Brockway Mountain Drive. The nine mile drive up and over Brockway Mountain is one of the most scenic drives in the US.

Keweenaw Drone Video
We spent a few weeks in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula during summer 2015 and did some filming of the scenery. The Keweenaw is home to Michigan Technological University, the birthplace of professional hockey and Michigan's most northern point. There is a rich mining history in the area and some scenes of mining ruins and tailings can be seen in the video.

Copper Harbor Day 2
Day 2 of Copper Harbor provided much nicer weather and a significantly different type of riding by the time I was done. I worked my way up to the Keweena Mountain Lodge by taking Jim Rooks to Garden Brook Sec2 to Bullwinkle out to US41 where I crossed and took Blue Trail to Simmer Sec1, Simeh Sec2, Say Hello, and Ma Maki Sec 3, before connecting with the Keweenaw Point Trail which took me out and around Lake Fanny Home.
In my observation, trail built to the west of US41 is everything that you see in popular and promotional pictures. New school, machine built flow trail. Once I crossed the road, though, the trail had an entirely different feel. To me, it had more of an old school cross country feel, even though you could tell it was carefully crafted. There were a lot more rock features, roots, and off-camber technical sections than the west side. Also, even though you enter that section of trail at higher elevation than Garden Brook or Jim Rooks, there is still a fair amount of climbing to be done before reaching the peak overlooking Lake Fanny Hooe. But when you get there, that view is incredible.
There were several spots on the east side of US41 that I cringed going over with my full suspension XC mountain bike for fear of slashing a tire, bottoming out the suspension, or breaking spokes from impact. I never had any issues, though, and proved that my Specialized Epic 29er was again up to the task.
Copper Harbor is a place that I'll return to in the next few years as I was only able to touch the surface of the riding out there with the time crunch I was in. I also took it easy because this was two days before one of my favorite races, Ore to Shore in Marquette, so I didn't want to leave with any bike or body damage.
HIDDEN Homesteaders Paradise [Lake Superior & The Keweenaw]
We decided to take a last minute camping trip to Copper Harbor Michigan with the family before winter starts. Years ago we stumbled upon the Keweenaw peninsula on a motorcycle trip and we've been going back ever since. Lake Superior is frighteningly beautiful and awe inspiring. If you're looking for a place to start your homesteading journey, the Keweenaw in Michigan's upper peninsula just might be the place for you. We think it's a hidden homesteaders paradise.

Lady From Keweenaw County (6-11-15)
This is an original I wrote back in 1993 after returning to Lansing from a trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Karen and I have spent many hours rambling around that part of this beautiful state and have met some terrific people who in our minds define the term salt of the earth. Hardy folks who can tolerate nearly 400 inches of snow in one season (see winter of ‘78-‘79) and still keep their sense of humor.
The pictures are from some of our more recent trips to the UP. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any digital pics of the Keweenaw. The slide show does, however, include scenes of Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore, Tahquamenon Falls (both upper and lower falls), Porcupine Mountains Lake of the Clouds and various shots of Lake Superior along the south shore.
Like our state slogan says, Si Quæris Peninsulam Amœnam Circumspice, If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you,” But don’t take my word for it, come see for yourself.
The Lady from Keweenaw County
(Mark Manrique -1993)
Verse 1 Pretty long legs and skin so fair
Pale blue eyes and chestnut hair
A voice that floated on the cool night air
She came from Keweenaw County
Verse 2 Just like the country from where she came
She had spirit you could not tame
Right or wrong it was all the same
To the Lady from Keweenaw County
Chorus Oh dear lord I loved her so
But just like the wind her love blew cold
Why on earth did she have to go and leave
Keweenaw… County
Verse 3 I remember still when last we met
The way I felt I'll never forget
She touched my heart, my soul and yet
She left me in Keweenaw County
Verse 4 She said she couldn't lead me on
For tomorrow promised a brand new dawn
And she just had to see what lay beyond
The borders of Keweenaw County
Chorus Oh dear Lord I loved her so
But just like the wind, her love blew cold
Why on earth did she have to go and leave
Keweenaw County
Verse 5 Her smile still lingers in my mind
And warms my soul like summertime
Oh how I wish she still was mine
The Lady from Keweenaw County
Verse 6 The winds blow colder for me now
And life goes on, but I don't know how
I could ever let her break her vow
To this fool in Keweenaw County
Repeat Verse 1
