Places to see in ( Arles - France ) Hotel de Ville
The town hall of Arles , located on the Place de la Republique, is a building completed in 1676, the greater part of which is now classified as a historic monument. It is still the seat of the City Council of Arles. In 1657, during a particularly lavish and opulent episode for the city, his council wanted to build a new town hall instead of the common house dating back to the end of the Middle Ages and which was located between the old palace Podestats and the clock tower. It took nearly twenty years for the project to see the light of day.
Several projects were rejected before that of Louis-Francois de Royers de la Valfenière was retained in 1666. It was immediately started, but in the spring of 1667, when the construction amounted to about 4 meters , the Avignon architect reported many defects. His report, followed by a lawsuit that lost the masons, concluded the obligation to shave what had been done ... The demolitions made, the city council sought to improve the project, which caused 5 years of hesitation on the drawings to remember.
Finally, in June 1673, a new market was spent on the drawings of the architect Jacques Peytret and the sculptor Dominique Pilleporte. But at the end of the same month, the unexpected passage of Jules Hardouin-Mansart in the city brought still modifications: the Parisian architect proposed new elevations for the facades, a displacement of the staircase and especially convinced the council of the possibility to vault the vestibule of the ground floor without any intermediate pillar
On the ground floor is a vestibule with a very low vault, formed of two cradles at right angles, falling in the ends of the oven and connected to the walls by glasses. Despite the range reaching 15 m , the vault of the vault is very weak. The visitor is there before the absolute masterpiece of French stereotomy , which brings together with unparalleled virtuosity all the characteristics of this art - lowering, play of apparatus, nudity of intrados.
The main staircase leading to the council room is framed by two lions sculpted by Jean Dedieu . It is adorned from the beginning of the Venus of Arles , an ancient Greco-Roman discovered at the ancient theater of Arles , but today it is a copy of the work modified by Girardon whose original is now in the Louvre. On the facade of the first floor is a balcony framed by double columns. On the second floor, a central pediment featuring a sun, symbol of Louis XIV, a decoration of balusters and pots-a-feu.

Arles, France 6 am stroll
Arles, in Provence, in the south of France. We enjoy another morning stroll, hanging out in Place Voltaire, a charming spot to watch the day begin, with its little tree-shaded square in the center surrounded by lovely old buildings. A couple of cafés and small food shops are open, but nothing much else is happening. La Giraudière opens later, serving tasty lunch and dinner. You'll see a few people on their way to work or school, but this village square is fairly quiet at this hour. There are several nice little two-star hotels located around the plaza in this part of town with reasonable rates, including Gaughin, Voltaire and Mirador. Walk a few hundred yards west to the ancient Roman Baths of Constantine, built in the 4th century, which you can appreciate from the outside, saving time and money, while enjoying a view of the Rhône River.
ARLES, FRANCE: Travel day, a BLIND tasting menu & Maison Volver hotel! | Ep. 32
Today we leave Aix-en-Provence, travel through Marseilles and land in Arles. We stay at our favorite hotel, Maison Volver, hosted by two lovely ladies, Florence and Carol. Their hospitality stole our hearts (and our stomachs...everything there is so delicious!!!) They have perfected their craft and there is no more perfect place in Arles than Hotel Maison Volver.
After a beautiful dinner and a peaceful sleep, we wake and manage to pull ourselves away from the hotel long enough to explore a little bit of what the city has to offer.
For dinner, we dined at Chardon, a must-do while in Arles. They offer a blind tasting menu with visiting chefs from around the world, a concept that we were so pleased we experienced!

Arles, Provence in the south of France
We are taking you to the beautiful city of Arles, in Provence in the south of France. Arles is most famous for its Roman amphitheater, still intact, and its connections with Van Gogh, who spent one of his final years here painting 200 canvases. Its real appeal, however, is found in the lovely pedestrian promenades, the historic landmarks, museums and tranquil plazas, all of which make Arles one of the most charming places in Europe.

There's a lot of these narrow streets in Arles, there is a small pedestrian zone, there's the various squares and the cafés around it, of course, and historic sites. And we will be showing you those highlights coming up right now as we take a walk through Arles.
The old town of Arles is comfortably small. It's about a square mile. So it's very easy to see the whole thing on foot. You might consider spending a couple of days here.
Or you could visit as a daytrip for example from Avignon which is just 20 miles away and only takes 20 minutes by train to get here. In this program we will show you how you can do everything in one day but certainly if you want to spend more time you decide for yourself. To help you plan your visit we will also present more detailed suggestions about how you could spend a night or two here and still find lots to do.
This is part of a series we’re presenting showing how Avignon makes a very good home base for visiting out to other destinations like Pont du Gard, and St Remy and Nimes along with Aix and Marseille, and especially Arles, the wonderful city of van Gogh and the ancient Romans, with narrow pedestrian lanes weaving throughout the center
The main attractions are the arena, the pedestrian zone and a historic museum. We will show you a good walking route on the map. Of course you can walk anywhere you want, it’s small enough, but this route will take you right through the center and then back to the train station, a route just over 2 miles, or about 3 kilometers, you can do in several hours. But you should also see the history museum while you're here, with its fine collection from the ancient Roman days, an easy detour. So let's assume you're coming in from Avignon on a day trip and you want to see everything.

In the middle of the 17th century a Carmelite convent was erected in Arles by Mother Madeleine Saint Joseph. It was a residence for nuns until 1770 when the order was expelled in the midst of the French Revolution. The convent then became state property until it was purchased and transformed into a hotel in 1929. In this beautiful old convent, the Hôtel Jules César has earned a rating of four stars under the directorship of Monsieur Michel Albagnac. The hotel is situated next to and shares a courtyard with the Chapelle de la Charité, which belongs to the hotel and also dates from the 17th century. The restaurant, Lou Marquès, is air conditioned and lovely, known for its classic and Provençal cooking. Breakfast is served in the Olivier room set under a glass ceiling during the winter, and on the terrace in summer. All bedrooms are air conditioned and spacious: room 72, with windows opening onto the garden, is an elegant, large room with two double beds. The pool is a welcome addition for those hot summer days in this region and now neighbours a beautiful Provençal garden.
Arles, France 4 eve stroll
Arles, in Provence, France, evening stroll. The streets are bustling late in the afternoon in Arles, in Provence, in the south of France. You'll see lots of friendly folks out here in the streets of Arles in the evening. It's a great time to be out for a stroll. The weather is nice, the lights are on, the daylight is still lingering in the twilight sky beyond, and it's just a perfect time for the evening stroll. We're in the south of France, and they do observe the siesta, so many of the shops are closed between 1 PM and 3 PM, and then they reopen until about 8 PM in the evening. We photographed this program during the month of November, which as it turns out is a great time to visit the south of France. The weather was cool, but not cold and the town's sights were never crowded, but everything was open, so you can fit in like a local.
