Howick Falls 2018
With recent rains in Natal, Midmar Dam started to flow over the Dam wall after four years. this is the result downstream at the beautiful Howick Falls.
Howick Falls is a waterfall in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. The waterfall is approximately 94 m in height (310 feet) and lies on the Umgeni River. The Zulu people called the falls KwaNogqaza, which means Place of the Tall One. According to local legend, the pool at the bottom of the falls is the residence of the Inkanyamba, a giant serpent-like creature. According to lore, only sangomas can safely approach the falls and then only to offer prayers and other acts of worship to the Inkanyamba, ancestral spirits and the 'Great God' The Zulu tribes of the area believe it to be a large serpent with a horse like head. Most active in the summer months, it is believed that the Inkanyamba's anger causes the seasonal storms in the area.

For thousands of years Howick Falls, in the South African province of Kwa-Zulu Natal has been the source of legends. The Zulu's believe a giant snake, known as Inkanyamba inhabits the pool at the bottom of the falls. Rock paintings from the region show that the Bushmen who lived here before the Zulus also believed in the giant snake. Inkanyamba is feared and respected by the local community. It is believed to carry the spirits of the ancestors and bring death to anyone who sees it. Only witchdoctors or Sangomas are permitted to visit the pool where it is believed to live. Several Europeans are also convinced that a strange monster lurks in the depths. Bob Teeney took a photograph of plesiosaura-type animal that he claims surfaced when he visited the pool with a friend. He also claims to have found eggs belonging to a dinosaur. Experts think the eggs are more likely those of a crocodile. There is no doubt however that Howick Falls possess a mysterious allure. This could explain the large number of people who are attracted to the falls to end their own lives.

I find it so wild that for biology class we get to go on amazing hikes to such gorgeous waterfalls such as Howick. While the water itself was not the cleanest (due to pollution) the waterfall stands at least 120ft tall!

Tourism concerns at Howick Falls in KwaZulu-Natal
Tourism is a key driver of the economy and contributes to job creation.
But some towns are battling to maintain tourism infrastructure, and some tourist areas are affected by a surge in crime.
One such place is the popular Howick Falls in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
Parliament's portfolio committee visited the area this week following complaints of crime and neglect.
