Welcome to The Japan News.
I love Japanese food.
And so does Matthew Amster-Burton, who wrote “Pretty Good Number One: An American Family Eats Tokyo.”
It’s a food memoir about an entire month the author and his family spent living and eating in Tokyo.
It also includes a couple of out-of-town excursions, such as a visit to Utsunomiya to try the city’s famous gyoza dumplings.
His favorite place for hiyashi chuka, a cold noodle dish, is in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, not too far from The Japan News office. So, I decided to check it out.
As you can see, they certainly have generous servings.
If there’s a dignified way to eat this stuff, I haven’t figured it out. But that’s kind of beside the point.
Reading this book also moved me to finally try a few of the many yakitori grilled chicken joints in Shinjuku’s Omoide Yokocho alley.
Amster-Burton’s description of the anago eel at his favorite tempura place in Nakano was so mouthwatering that I went there, too, but they were closed when I stopped by.
Until I get a chance to go there again, I’ll have to content myself with having read about it in his book.
