Datong fue originalmente la capital de Wei del Norte (386 ~ 534) y el capital de soporte 'de Liao (916 ~ 1125) y Jin (1115 ~ 1234). Datong was originally the capital of Northern Wei (386~534) and the 'support capital' of Liao (916~1125) and Jin (1115~1234). Northern Wei is a stage during which Buddhism developed quite rapidly in China. In the later Liao and Jin, the belief in Buddhism also increased to a high level. Therefore, as the country's political and economic center, many temples, pagodas and other buildings related to Buddhism were set up during these periods in Datong.
Hanging Temple of Hengshan - Datong, China
The magnificent, gravity defying Hanging Temple is one of the world's forgotten wonders. Clinging to a crag of Hengshan mountain the temple consists of 40 rooms linked by a dizzying maze of narrow passageways.
The temple was constructed by drilling holes into the cliffs side into which oak crossbeams and oak poles hold up the temple. The main supportive structure is hidden inside the bedrock.
The monastery is located in the small canyon basin, and the body of the building hangs from the middle of the cliff under the prominent summit, protecting the temple from rain, erosion and sunlight.
Interestingly the temple is dedicated to not just one religion, but three, with Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism all practiced within the temple and represented in 78 statues and carvings throughout the temple.
The Hanging Temple is also know as the Hanging Monastery or Xuankong, it's located about 60 km southwest of Datong, China in Shanxi province. The temple is said to have been built by a monk named Liao Ran during the late Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD) and restored in 1900.
The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2010, it was listed in 'Time Magazine' as the world's top ten most odd dangerous buildings.

Datong, China: Nine Dragon Screen & Huayan Si Monastery
After you visit the fabulous Yungang Cave Temples, the only other two sites worth visiting are the colorful Nine Dragon Screen and Huayan Si Buddhist Monastery.
It may take a whopping 10 minutes to visit both sites and...hey...there's nothing else to do in Datong so you may as well make the effort and see them.
Datong City Wall and Huayan Monastery
Take a stroll along Datong's recently rebuilt City Wall. Walking along this new version of the historical structure, you can see both ancient and modern Datong on either side of the wall. From there, visit the Buddhist Huayan Monastery. This massive temple was also renovated in the 2000's, and it is now ten times bigger than the original.

Xuan Kong Si - Monasterio Colgante Hanging Temple Monastery Jinlong Heng Hunyuan Datong Shanxi China
Este monasterio fue construido sobre la ladera vertical del cañón Jinlong, cerca del Monte Heng, en la provincia de Shanxi, a 65 kilómetros al noroeste de Datong en China
Está compuesto por diversos pabellones que se funden con el entorno natural de la ladera rocosa y se unen entre ellos mediante corredores, pasarelas y escaleras.

The Hanging Temple or Hanging Monastery simplified Chinese: 悬空寺; traditional Chinese: 懸空寺; pinyin: Xuánkong Sì is a temple built into a cliff 75 m or 246 ft above the ground near Mount Heng in Hunyuan County, Shanxi province, China.
The closest city is Datong, 65 kilometers to the northwest.
Along with the Yungang Grottoes, the Hanging Temple is one of the main tourist attractions and historical sites in the Datong area.
Built more than 1,500 years ago, this temple is notable not only for its location on a sheer precipice but also because it includes Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian elements.

According to the history of Hengshan Mountain, construction of the temple started at the end of the Northern Wei Dynasty by only one man, a monk named Liao Ran 了然.
Over a history of more than 1,600 years many repairs and extension led to its present day scale.

On our second day in Datong we visited the architectural and historical gem, the hanging temple - Xuankong temple. Hanging off a side of a mountain, 75 m over the ground and built in 491 (yes, it has survived more than 1400 years) - if this doesn't amaze you then I don't know what will!

Hanging Temple of Hengshan in Datong, China: A 5th-century temple improbably built into the side of a cliff.
In 386 the Turkic Tuoba people took advantage of troubled times in China to establish their own dynasty, the northern Wei, and subsequently took Datong as their capital.
Although this was a very turbulent period in Chinese history, the Wei became devout Buddhists, and some important cultural sites were constructed during their relatively short rule.
Hanging Monastery was built in 491 and has survived more than 1400 years.
