Toledo is truly one of Spain's most magnificent cities. Dramatically sited atop a gorge overlooking the Río Tajo, it was known as the City Of Three Cultures in the Middle Ages, a place where Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities peacefully coexisted. Unsurprisingly, rediscovering the vestiges of this unique cultural synthesis remains modern Toledo’s most compelling attraction. Horseshoe-arched mosques, Sephardic synagogues and one of Spain’s finest Gothic cathedrals cram into its dense historical core. But the layers go much deeper. Further sleuthing will reveal Visigothic and Roman roots. Though it's justifiably popular with day trippers, try to stay overnight to really appreciate the city in all its haunting glory.

Toledo is considered most representative of Spanish culture, and its historic centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. Its rocky site is traversed by narrow, winding streets, with steep gradients and rough surfaces, centring on the Plaza Zocodover. Two bridges cross the Río Tajo: in the northeast is the bridge of Alcántara, at the foot of the medieval castle of San Servando, parts of which date from Roman and Moorish times, in the northwest is the bridge of San Martín, dating from the late 13th century. Parts of the walls of Toledo are of Visigothic origin, although most are Moorish or Christian. There are well-preserved gateways from various periods, including the Puerta Vieja de Bisagra from the 10th century, traditionally used by Alfonso VI in 1085.

Spain Trip 2017 #23 Toledo's churches
The Mudejar-style church of Santiago del Arrabal dates to 1248 with a Plateresque altarpiece from the 1600s. The nearby church of Christo de la Luz was originally a mosque built circa 1000. It was converted to a church in 1187 following the Reconquista, at which point the apse with its crude Romanesque art was added. In the courtyard outside, the small garden with its fountains is a reminder of the site’s Islamic heritage. The courtyard overlooks the lower town and one of the city gates, the Puerta del Sol. One of the parishioners at the church of Santo Leocadia left her dog outside while she attended mass. San Roman is a 13th c. Mudejar church. Dating to circa 1200, Santa Maria la Blanca was originally built as a Jewish synagogue by Muslim workers, which accounts for the Moorish-style arches. It became a church in 1492 when Toledo’s Jews were required to convert or leave. The exterior of the Franciscan monastery of San Juan de los Reyes is adorned with the chains used by Muslim rulers to shackle Christian prisoners in Granada prior to the Reconquista. Constructed to celebrate Isabel’s ascension to the throne of Castile, the coat of arms of the Catholic monarchs appears throughout the church’s interior, as do lions, the symbol of their power. This heralded the birth of the new united Spain since her husband Ferdinand was already king of Aragon. In fact, Ferdinand and Isabella were planning to be buried here until they decided Granada would make a more symbolic resting place as the site of the Reconquista’s culmination. The peaceful cloisters include a humorous carving of a monkey sitting on a toilet reading the Bible upside down, put here by a mischievous medieval stone carver as a subtle insult to the Franciscans whom he apparently considered to be pseudo-intellectuals with big libraries and small brains. Upon leaving, a cheerful skeleton reminds visitors of their mortality and asks if they’re prepared to face eternity. The video ends with a series of still photos taken by my wife, Pam.

Toledo, Fiestas Nuestra Senora de la Estrella, The Procession - Spain 4K Travel Channel
On the last day of our stay in Toledo, we witness the highlight of the Fiesta Nuestra Senora de la Estrella, the solemn procession of the Virgen de la Estrella through the neighborhood. The Plaza Estrella, where one celebrated the evenings before, is decorated with flowers and flags. After a look into the church, we recognize that the Madonna has also moved. She is wearing a brocade dress and a veil in her hair. Flowers decorate the appearance.
There is already a slight nervousness among the helpers. It is no easy task to carry a 316-kg statue for hours over stairs and uphill and downhill. At least 12 strong men, usually even 16, are necessary to cope with this task.
In the meantime, the music band has arrived. Mothers take care of their daughters dressed in white. They will walk at the head of the procession.
In the church, the incense kettle is filled before the statue is shouldered. In the morning one had already moved it from the altar to the stretcher.
For this purpose, one created a separate device to transport the statue down as well as upwards, like on an inclined lift. The first steps are taken on command. It shows whether the community harmonizes because the move must be in sync.
A challenging task follows immediately. The men have to lower the statue so that it can pass through the church portal without damage, then a 90 ° turn to the left and one step down.
But the men solve this task without any problems.
The procession starts. The girls dressed in white follow the cross at the top. Selected men carry the statue of the Virgen de la Estrella under the proud glances of their wives. Then come the priests and dignitaries, followed by the band at the end.
The procession circles around the Iglesia de Santiago del Arrabal, before it moves along Calle Real de Arrabal. Then we lose sight of it, but we suspect he goes along Calle Azacanes to Puerta del Vado, then Carrera, Calle Honda and Calle Trinitanos to the Hospital Tavera. Again and again one has to insert small breaks to relieve the bearers.
