HONDURAS, the magnificent GOLDEN ALTAR of the CATHEDRAL in TEGUCIGALPA ⛪
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to the beautiful Central American country of Honduras and let's visit the capital city of Tegucigalpa. We are going to visit the capital's gleaming cathedral which presides over the eastern edge of Plaza Morazán and is named for the city's patron saint, the archangel Michael. The domed structure, flanked by towering palms, has stood on this site since 1765. Earth tremors and rain took their toll on the edifice through the centuries, but after a five-year, $500,000 restoration, completed in 2009, the cathedral is fabulous once again. The restoration project returned the cathedral to its original salmon color. Sunlight streams into the apse, where we will find the glittering gold-and-silver altar sculpted by Guatemalan artist Vicente Galvéz, and which is the subject of this video.
Honduras is a Central American country with Caribbean Sea coastlines to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. In the tropical rainforest near Guatemala, the ancient Mayan ceremonial site Copán has stone-carved hieroglyphics and stelae, tall stone monuments. In the Caribbean Sea are the Bay Islands, a diving destination that's part of the 1,000km-long Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

Honduras: Rival gangs parley as Catholic church mediates
Honduras' two main rival street gangs, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18, met Tuesday in the second largest city San Pedro Sula to announce results of ceasefire negotiations reportedly mediated by the Honduran Catholic Church. The dialogue between the two gangs allegedly began eight months ago, when Bishop Emiliani and Adam Blackwell, Ambassador for Security Affairs of the Organisation of American States, visited prisons in San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa to meet with gang leaders.
The ceasefire mirrors the truce in El Salvador, where leaders of the same gangs agreed to a ceasefire last year. The truce saw the number of violent deaths sharply decrease. During the 14-month truce homicides have dropped about 52 percent, according to public security authorities.
An anonymous gangster from the street gang, 'Mara Salvatrucha' acknowledged their detrimental actions towards honduran society, We are conscious that we have done something wrong. And so this is why we are asking society for forgiveness. And so we need for them to also listen to us, and then we will give them our word that yes, right. We will reduce the crimes of violence and we will have a better control. While another named Marc from the street gang 'Mara 18' said, What we want is to work. Right. What we want is peace with God, peace with the society and with the authorities. That is all my friends.
President Porphyry Lobo said that he backs the efforts of the Catholic Church in arranging the truce, he also called Bishop Romulo of San Pedro Sula to offer his support in bringing peace to Honduras, which carries one of the highest homicide rates in the world.
Both gangs hold their roots in Southern California, where young men seeking refuge from the Reagan-backed civil wars in Central America formed violent gangs on the streets of LA in the 1980's. After being involved in several crimes which led to many of their deportations from the US, gang members re-established their organisations in their native countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
HONDURAS: SHANTY TOWNS
Spanish/Nat
Bill Clinton will visit Honduras, the country worst hit by last years Hurricane Mitch, on the second day of what is intended to be a goodwill tour in Central America.
Clinton will talk about reconstruction in Soto Cano air base and will stop briefly by a bridge in Tegucigalpa that the U-S military helped to rebuild.
His trip won't be much more than a neighbourly show of compassion and solidarity --he leaves at home nearly one (b) billion dollars in U-S aid trapped by political wrangling on Capitol Hill.
Honduras' estimated losses amount to around four (b) billion U-S dollars and reconstruction could take thirty to forty years.
Bill Clinton will visit Tegucigalpa, Honduras' capital, for only four hours on Tuesday.
His motorcade will drive him directly from Toncotin International Airport to this bridge, the Juan Molina, that the U-S military helped to rebuild.
From the bridge, he will assess Hurricane Mitch's damage along the river.
And the damage has been enormous.
Days of fierce, incessant rain brought by Mitch caused the Choluteca river to rise and flood the city centre.
The capital was inundated as a wall of water cascaded down, destroying one-third of its housing and leaving many of its one (m) million inhabitants homeless.
Most survivors were taken to shelters, but four months after the disaster, entire families are coming back to rebuild houses in the areas where they used to live.
Here, in Colonia Las Brisas, the Catholic Church has provided building materials for the people and the shantytown is rapidly growing again.
And this, despite the government's ban on building so near the river.
But people like Alberto Figueroa have lived here all their lives and intend to remain here.
They want the aid to go directly to the people, instead of the government that, Figueroa claims, has given them nothing.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish)
The government has given us nothing. Not food, nor building materials. The Catholic Church is the one helping us with food and materials so that we can build and stop living in tinned houses as we are now.

For these people the future looks bleak.
Hondurans have got to live with the loss of thousands of people, but Mitch also crippled the country's farming, vital to its economy.
And the country faces the huge costs of rebuilding roads and bridges that got washed away.
Honduras puts its total losses at four (b) billion U-S dollars, roughly its annual GDP and it owes roughly four (b) billion U-S dollars to official foreign creditors.
Israel Panegas is also rebuilding his old home.
He would like Clinton to see the human disaster behind those figures so that U-S aid will be given to those really in need.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish)
They say he's coming (Clinton) to see for himself if the situation is as hard as he has been told. I hope he will come and have a look and I hope help will be given to us. I would like them to visit the places where disaster really hit, where we are trying to start a new life.

The United States has already spent 305 (m) million U-S dollars on relief in Central America, and Clinton has asked Congress for 965 (m) million more to help in the region's reconstruction.
But the aid emergency package remains tangled in domestic spending politics in Capitol Hill.
In Las Brisas neighbourhood, everybody is working on reconstruction, but it is estimated that the reconstruction of the country could take thirty to forty years.
