IN GUARDIA PARADE @ FORT ST ELMO, VALLETTA - MALTA
The IN GUARDIA PARADE is a re-enactment that evokes an authentic event that took place regularly inside important military fortifications in Malta and Gozo. The re-enactment portrays the inspection of Fort St Elmo by the Grand Bailiff in charge of military affairs in order to ensure that the fort is in good condition to defend the Valletta peninsula and the two harbours situated on either side of it.
During the re-enactment, the soldiers and knights of the fort's garrison - some 50 re-enactors in all - are kitted out in their finest uniforms to perform their military drill in order to demonstrate to the Grand Bailiff their state of readiness in the event of a military threat.
The show starts at 11.00 hrs and lasts 45 minutes.

The ticket will entitle the visitor to watch the re-enactment only and to visit the upper part of the fort. The re-enactments are held according to schedule as above. However, in case of inclement weather or else due to some unforeseen circumstance the event may be cancelled without prior notice. One may, nevertheless, purchase a ticket to visit the fort for a lesser fee. When in doubt it is best to contact the Tourist Information Office at Auberge D'Italie, Merchants Street, Valletta. This office is also open on Sunday mornings from 9 onwards and may be reached by phone on 22915440/1/2
Getting there: One may take the bus from any locality that has Valletta bus terminus as its last destination point. Walk down Republic Street (circa 12 minutes) to reach Fort St Elmo at the very bottom. Then turn right. When arriving in front of the fort one should walk for a further two minutes along the old granaries towards the south gate and enter the fort from there to reach the ticketing office.

IN GUARDIA PARADE

The re-enactment depicts the inspection of the fort and its garrison by the Grand Bailiff of the Order of the Knights of St. John who was in charge of military affairs. During the re-enactment the fort's garrison (some 70 characters in all) is dressed in its best uniforms to demonstrate its military prowess. The show starts at 11:00hrs and lasts some 40 minutes.

During the re-enactment, the soldiers and knights of the fort's garrison - some 55 re-enactors - are kitted-out in their uniforms to perform a military drill, demonstrating to the Grand Bailiff the garrison's state of readiness. The show begins at 11.00 a.m. and lasts 40 minutes.

In the morning we went to see the historic In Guardia Parade in Birgu (Vittoriosa). Then we went for a walk thru Birgu. After that we visited Kalkara and Senglea nearby. The evening we spent in Valletta. This was a very nice but also a quite windy day.
