Trebinje, the southernmost city in Bosnia and Herzegovina lies at the foot of Leotar Mountain (1224 meters, highest limestone peak of the area), at the edge of the karst Trebinjsko and Popovo polje - Trebinje and Popovo Fields, at the altitude of 270 meters. Trebinje is situated only 28 km away from the famous city of Dubrovnik /Croatia/ and 40 km away from Herceg Novi /Montenegro/. The town of Trebinje is located in the hinterland of the Adriatic Sea, specifically in the hinterland of Dubrovnik and Herceg Novi coast. Trebinje borders with Bileća in the north, with Ljubinje in the northwest, with municipality of Ravno in the west, with Dubrovnik in the southwest, with Heceg Novi in the south and Nikšić in the east. Trebinje ranks with Mostar and Stolac in terms of beauty but fortunately escaped the fates of these two towns and was not heavily damaged during the Bosnian war, leaving its old town intact. However, Trebinje is unfortunately famous for Srđan Aleksic, (Herzegovinian Serb born 1966, tragically died 27 January 1993), who was real Serbian patriot and heroicly lost his life trying to defend his Muslim fellow citizen Alen Glavović by being beaten to death. Srđan's father wrote in the obituary of his son that Srđan died carrying out his human duty. The toponym Trebinje comes from the Byzantine term Travunia, which was initially a Byzantine territory governed by the Serbs. It commanded the road from Ragusa /Dubrovnik/ to Constantinople, traversed, in 1096, by Raymond of Toulouse and his crusaders. Under the name of Tribunia or Travunja (the Trebigne of the Ragusans), it belonged to the Serbian Empire until 1355. Trebinje became a part of the expanded Medieval Bosnian state under Tvrtko I in 1373. There is a medieval tower in Gornje Police (Gornye Politse) whose construction is often attributed to Vuk Brankovic. In 1482 Trebinje was captured by the Turks as the rest of Herzegovina. The city walls, the Old Town square, and two mosques of Trebinje, were built in beginning of the 18th century by Resulbegović family. The Arslanagić Bridge was originally built in the 16th century by Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic, at the village of Arslanagić, five kilometres north of the town. Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic attributed Arslan-aga and his family to charge the bridge toll after which the bridge got its name. Arslanagic Bridge was moved closer to Trebinje (1 km) in the late 1960s when it got under water, because of the new-constructed accumulation lake. The Arslanagić Bridge represents one of the most attractive and beautiful Turkish bridges in Bosnia and Herzegovina, featuring two large and two small semicircular arches. During the period of Austro-Hungarian administration /1878-1918/, several fortifications were built on the hills surrounding Trebinje, and there was a garrison based in the town. They also modernized the town, expanding it westwards, building the present main street, as well as, several squares, park, new schools, tobacco plantations, etc forming unique mixture of the Oriental and Mediterranean architectrue of Trebinje. Industrial development during the period of the socialist Yugoslavia, especially hydroelectric potential brought large increase in urban population of Trebinje. There is barely a town in Herzegovina that was not erected alongside a fresh-water river. Trebinje is no exception - its old town lines the banks of the Trebisnjica River that flows through the heart of the city. Trebišnjica River, the largest underground river in the world is 98 km long and along with its underground courses it makes total length of 187 km. Trebišnjica River is composed of complex system of surfacant and underground water courses in Herzegovina. The Trebisnjica River and the city of Trebinje have always been known for the enormous number of old water mills treading the Trebisnjica. Although water mills on Trebisnjica River are not fully functional today, they remain a symbol of Herzegovina's not-so-distant past when everything was directly connected to the power of nature. The Vjetrenica Cave is Monument of Nature and outstanding tourist attraction and nature landmark, located on the west edge of Popovo Polje, near Zavala village. Along the banks of the Trebišnjica river, in the Petrovo and Popovo Polje plains, vines grow surrounded by stony and lunar mountains. Back in 1894, Austro-Hungarians declared this region to be the most convenient area for growing white wine grapes called Žilavka, thus creating one of the two regal vineyards, whereby this spot was the only place for cultivating Žilavka that was exclusively delivered to the Viennese court. These vines give life to žilavka and vranac, two wines that have made the history and success of enology in Eastern Herzegovina.

KULA ZMAJA OD BOSNE - G R A D A Č A C - CASTLE OF THE DRAGON OF BOSNIA (1765 - 2014) EPP
KULA HUSEIN KAPETANA GRADAŠČEVIĆA 1831 - 1832
Gradačac Castle (Bosnian: Dvorac Gradačac) is a castle located in Gradačac in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Gradačac Castle has a fort with 18-metre high walls built between 1765 and 1821, and a 22-metre high watchtower, built in 1824 by Husein-kapetan Gradaščević on foundations made originally by the Romans. It is finished in the 19th century. In 1831 general rallied the Bosnians against the Turkish occupation and drove the Ottomans out to Kosovo, winning Bosnia its sovereignty for the coming year. Therefore, fortification has great historic importance for Bosnians. It has been recently renovated.
Husein-kapetan Gradaščević (31 August 1802 -- 17 August 1834) was a Bosniak general who fought against the Ottoman Empire and new reforms implemented by the Sultan Mahmud II which abolished the ayan (landlord) system. He is often referred to as Zmaj od Bosne, meaning the Dragon of Bosnia. Gradaščević was born in Gradačac in 1802—hence his surname Gradaščević, meaning of Gradačac—and grew up surrounded by a political climate of turmoil in the western reaches of the Ottoman Empire. The young Husein developed a reputation for wise rule and tolerance and soon became one of the most popular figures in Bosnia.
Combined with frustrations over territorial, political concessions in the north-east to the newly created Principality of Serbia, and the plight of Slavic Muslim refugees arriving from the Sanjak of Smederevo into Bosnia Eyalet. The persecution and abolition of the Janissary during the Auspicious Incident in 1826 and reduced the role of autonomous Pasha's in Rumelia, culminated in a partially unsuccessful revolt by Husein Gradaščević, who endorsed a multicultural Bosnia Eyalet autonomous from the authoritarian rule of the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II and his Tanzimat reforms made all subjects equal before the law, including eligibility for conscription.
The Bosnian Uprising lasted for three years and demanded autonomy, overthrowing Mahmud II's local loyalists. During the uprising, Husein Gradaščević was chosen as the leader and Vizier of Bosnia Eyalet in the year 1831. During the summer of that year, he led nearly 25,000 men and marched towards Kosovo, where his forces battled against Ottoman regulars under the command of Grand Vizier Reşid Mehmed Pasha, who had set up encampments near Štimlje in their efforts to subdue the uprisings in both Kosovo and Bosnia. There, Husein Gradaščević's forces dealt a heavy defeat to the imperial army during the Third Battle of Kosovo and at Novi Pazar. The uprising itself, however, was crushed when Ali-paša Rizvanbegović of Stolac defected towards Mahmud II; in return he was awarded with the succession of Herzegovina, however only as a Vilayet. By 1832, after a series of smaller clashes, a decisive battle occurred outside Sarajevo; although Husein Gradaščević was initially successful, he was defeated when fellow Bosniaks from Herzegovina arrived and sided with and reinforced the forces of Mahmud II. The Bosniak Uprising would not be completely quelled until all captaincies were abolished in 1835 and until all the districts of the captaincies were abolished in 1837. The residual unrest, however, was not finally suppressed until as late as 1850.
Husein Gradaščević was forced to flee to the Austrian Empire on 31 May. From there, he negotiated for his return with Mahmud II and was ultimately allowed back but barred from ever entering Bosnia again. He moved to Belgrade and then to Constantinople, where he died under controversial circumstances in 1834 and was buried in the Ejub cemetery in Constantinople.
A legend in his own time, Husein Gradaščević is considered a Bosniak national hero and one of the most revered figures in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
