MODERN Indian APARTMENT TOUR in Diamond Avenue | Amritsar, India
In November of 2018, I revisited the country of India, one of my favorite travel destinations ever. After I went there and fell in love with the people, culture, and food in January of that year, I knew I had to come back, so I planned an epic, seven-city trip through the country with my travel buddy, Sam from Sam & Audrey!
Subscribe to Sam & Audrey:
During our time in our third city, Amritsar, Sam and I stayed at a beautiful, upscale Airbnb in Diamond Avenue. This three-story modern townhouse in the suburbs of Amritsar. After spending forty-eight hours exploring the city, I decided to give you guys a quick tour of our digs. Come with me and let’s check them out!
My Film Making Kit ►
One thing I really like about this place is that it’s secure. We definitely felt safe inside the locked gates. Up the marble staircase is the second floor, which is where Sam and I stayed. Our awesome caretaker stays on the third floor.
Inside our unit, is a lot of modern décor, including a nice dining table that seats six, a comfy couch, a glass coffee table, a brand-new TV and even a bar that had whisky and glasses behind it!
While the Airbnb is very modern, there were also some things I was disappointed with. It didn’t have a full kitchen, just a sink with a countertop, and no refrigerator. We were also promised WiFi, but it was broken while we were there. The hot water heater in the bathrooms didn’t work either, so Sam and I had to take cold showers.
There were also some really good things about the townhouse. The bedrooms were very nice. The beds were comfortable and we slept well there. India is notoriously noisy, even at night, but there was no street noise at all even though we were there during Diwali. We had small closets and standard Indian bathrooms.
One thing I really loved was going up to the rooftop every morning and watching the sun rise over Diamond Avenue. The sun is bright orange and red here in India and made for some stunning sunrises. The rooftop is where we wrap up our Airbnb tour and give a quick recap of our incredible 48 hours in the beautiful city of Amritsar and reveal our next destination: Bangalore!
One quick note: if you choose to stay in Diamond Avenue, I recommend you hire taxis to take you there and into the city, because as of November of 2018, there is no Uber in Amritsar.
I hope you enjoyed this apartment tour of our Airbnb in Amritsar! If you did, please give the video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. And please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss out on any of my upcoming food and travel content!

It is very unfortunate that communal riots take place from time to time in our country. We, as a nation, have to make up our mind and have a firm determination that these things must never occur. But if there are any problems arising out of the past, some people feel that they have not been adequately compensated. I don't know if we can compensate, I think, for the loss people have suffered, but whatever relief can be provided if there is additional scope then we will explore all avenues and I mean it. That applies not only to 1984, that applies also to the tragic events of Gujarat, which have brought, I think, a great deal of anguish and as a nation I think which reflected poorly on us.

STORYLINE:
As Manmohan Singh settles into his position as India's first Sikh Prime Minister, Sikhs across the country on Friday will be commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the government's attack on the Sacred Golden Temple of the Punjab in Amritsar.
Soldiers raided the religious site after growing tensions between New Delhi and Sikhs in the north of the country who complained of discrimination by the Hindu majority.
Following a long stand-off between Sikh separatists, led by Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who were occupying the temple and security forces, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered the attack on June 4, 1984.
Some 1200 people, including Bhindranwale, died in the fighting.
Anger over the attack, ultimately led to Gandhi's assassination, several months later, by her Sikh bodyguard.
The prime minister's death led to furious anti-Sikh riots in many parts of India, and the killing of hundreds of Sikhs during the tenure of Gandhi's son, Rajiv, when the administration was accused of looking the other way.
Ironically, the Congress party - to which Singh belongs - was in control of the country during the restive period.
Singh is the first Sikh to lead the government since its independence from Britain in 1947, and is a veteran of Indian politics.
He said his government will make sure the communal violence does not happen again.
Singh took the position after Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi, turned it down.
The Italian born politician was the wife of Rajiv Gandhi and daughter in law of Indira.

Amritsar museum recounts tales of India's partition
The Indian subcontinent in August 1947 endured one of the world's largest mass migrations when about 15 million Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs swapped countries after Britain ended its colonial rule. To encapsulate the sufferings of that period, a Partition Museum was opened in Amritsar, a city in Punjab, which lies close to the border with Pakistan. The exhibits of the museum are showcased in the red-brick town hall building and include photographs, newspapers clippings and donated items from the locals, who weathered that period.

Amritsar is a holy city in the state of Punjab in India. The name of the city derives from the name of the pool around the Golden Temple (also known as Harmandir Sahib) and means holy pool of nectar (Amrit: elixir; Sar: (short for sarovar) lake). It is the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh religion, and they are rightfully very proud of the city and their very beautiful and unique Gurdwara (place of worship). The Golden Temple was initiated by Guru Ramdas Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru, and completed in 1601 by his successor Guru Arjan Dev Ji. It is now a major pilgrimage and tourism hub.
The Golden Temple is the main attraction in the city, and the most important religious place to the Sikhs. It's a stunning complex, and always full of thousands of pilgrims from all over India, excited to be at a place that they usually only see on television. The excitement to be here is infectious, and many people will be more than happy to tell you all about their religion and customs, and show you around the temple itself. Cover your head, remove your shoes and wander around one of the most amazing places in India. The complex is open almost 24 hours (06:00-02:00 the next day) and is worth visiting twice: once during the day, once at night, when it's beautifully lit up.
As you arrive near the complex, you will more likely than not be accosted by hawkers trying to sell you bandanna's to cover your head. It's not a bad souvenir for INR10, but there's also a big barrel of free ones to choose from at the entrance itself. Deposit your shoes at the subterranean building to the left of the entrance, wash your feet at the entrance and head in.
Ghanta Ghar. This is the main entrance, sporting a distinctly Victorian clock-tower. Wash your feet in the water at the entrance in order to keep the temple clean.
Amrit Sarovar. The giant pool of water that surrounds and reflects the Golden Temple. Sections (marked off by ropes) are set aside for male pilgrims wishing to bathe. For female pilgrims there is a separate bath-house enclosing a small part of the pool.
Harmandir Sahib. This is the Golden Temple itself, floating above the Amrit Sarovar, housing the sacred Adi Granth scripture which is recited out loud during the day. This is the most crowded point, accessible by a bridge from the edge of the pool, and entry here is regulated by traditionally dressed Sikh guards. It's a 2-storey structure where Sikh saints are seated on each floor.
Akal Takht, directly opposite the Harmandir Sahib. Meaning The Timeless, this is where the highest council of Sikhs sits and deliberates. At night, the Guru Granth Sahib is taken to the Akal Takht.
Central Sikh Museum, 2nd floor (entrance on the right side of the main side of the main entrance). Devoted to large gallery of paintings, mostly showing the gruesome ways countless Sikhs have been martyred, and various knick-knacks from the gurus. Free.
All Sikhs are expected at some point in their lives to volunteer for a week at the temple, and everyone you see working here is fulfilling that duty. It's likely possible that you can join in if you feel so inclined - you could enquire by asking the people outside peeling vegetables, or those washing dishes.
Jallianwala Bagh (Garden) is a short 5-minute walk from the Golden Temple, and is the site of the 1919 Amritsar massacre. On 13 April of that year, British Indian Army soldiers opened fire on an unarmed gathering of men, women and children. The firing lasted about 10 minutes and 1650 rounds were fired, killing 1579 people. A memorial was built on the site and inaugurated by the then-President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on 13 April 1961. to this day the bullet holes can be seen on the walls and adjoining buildings. The well into which many people jumped and drowned attempting to save themselves from the hail of bullets is also a protected monument inside the park.
