Alexandroupolis - Greece in High Definition
Alexandroupoli (Greek: Αλεξανδρούπολη) is a city in Greece and the capital of the Evros regional unit in East Macedonia and Thrace. It is an important port and commercial center of northeastern Greece.
Alexandroupoli is one of the newest cities in Greece, as it was only a fishing village until the late 19th century. However, the modern city is located at the site of ancient Sale (Greek: Σάλη), a Greek city of the classical era founded by colonists from the island of Samothrace that is mentioned by Herodotus.
Alexandroupoli benefits from its position at the centre of land and sea routes connecting Greece with Turkey. Landmarks in Alexandroupoli include the city's lighthouse in the port, the archaeological sites of Mesimvria Zone and Maroneia stretching out to the small port of Agios Charalambos, the city's waterfront (center of commercial activity) and the nearby Evros Delta.

Two-thirds of the Greek people live in urban areas. Greece's largest metropolitan centers and most influential urban areas, are those of Athens and Thessaloniki with metropolitan populations of approximately 4 million and 1 million inhabitants respectively. The table below, using the preliminary population figures of the latest census (2011),[1] lists the largest cities in Greece, by population contained in their respective contiguous built up urban areas; which are either made up of many Census-designated places, evident in the cases of Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Volos, or are contained within a single Census-designated place, case evident in all of the other cities of the country. The lowest level of Census-Designated Places in Greece are called oikismoi (settlements) and are the smallest continuous built-up areas with a toponym designated for the census. Although some urban CDPs form individual cities and towns (labeled in bold) the majority of them do not. They are either what make up the central districts, or suburbs (italicized), contained within the wider urban and metropolitan areas of Athens and Thessaloniki.
The list below presents every settlement (CDP) that is urban, with a population of more than 10,000 de jure (permanent) residents, using data collected from the 2011 census.[2][3]

Dangerous crossing to safety in Europe
Desperate refugees chose the dangerous crossing from Turkey across the Evros River, which is a militarized natural border between Greece and Turkey. In mid May, a body was found, the 12th on the Greek side this year and compared to nine in all of 2017. According to forensics scientist of the University Hospital in Alexandroupoli, Pavlidis Pavlos, it’s a very big figure and he expects more as many have been reported missing recently, including children.
In March and April the daily human traffic in this area rose significantly, putting a severe strain on the inadequate and stretched reception capacity in the Registration and Identification Centre (RIC) at Fylakio in northern Evros, which all arrivals should pass through. The numbers in May have dropped, easing the pressure at least temporarily. In April, over 3,600 refugees and migrants crossed to Evros, compared to some 3,200 by sea to the Aegean islands near Turkey.
The total number of Evros arrivals from January until May was 7,200 compared to more than 5,600 for all 2017, according to data collated by UNHCR. The new arrivals came primarily from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan and included many families with children. It was the first time in years that land arrivals surpassed sea arrivals.
UNHCR offers close support to the Evros authorities, and has recently proposed the implementation of short and long-term measures to enhance the government’s response capacity in Evros. The agency is also proposing setting up mobile registration units, identifying open transit sites where arrivals from Evros can be directed and undergo registration and identification procedures.

It was an initiative of WWF Greece in cooperation with the former community of Dadia, forestry service of Soufli, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture.
This Center is currently the only space that accepts and inform guests about the Protected Area and receives a large number of visitors every year.
