San Cristobal, Galapagos, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno
Please SUBSCRIBE to help keep this Channel Alive. A video in our Quito & Galapagos Islands Playlist. On San Cristobal Island, we take a walk along the beach, the forest, visit Darwin Interpretation Centre & Puerto Baquerizo Moreno town on our 7 day Galapagos Islands cruise. We hope you will like it. Itinerary's change & the weather and wildlife cannot be controlled by travel organisers (probably that's for the best!).
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Christobal, Celebrity Xpedition
There are also cities at the Galapagos - the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the administrative capital of the islands, and with its 5,600 inhabitants is the second largest town in the Galapagos - the town is primarily a fishing village.
After breakfast we sailed to the waterfront in the panga's. First we went on a short tour of the local 'Interpretation Center' where there was an exhibition about the history of the Galapagos. Then we walked around town and looked at the sea lions lying on the street and benches along the waterfront. Back to Xpedition before lunch.

First day! I was kind of overwhelmed and didn’t want to rush myself but also didn’t want to miss out on anything. I loved San Cristobal because of all the Sea Lions they are EVERYWHERE. I think they said there was a colony of over 500 right in town! You are supposed to stay 3 meters away from all the animals but there were points when I was laying on the beach and look over and one had walked right up to me. That was the best part of the Galapagos for me. THE ANIMALS! There are so many animals and they are not afraid of you. They are just as curious as you are and want to investigate. Lucky for them they have never been hunted so they have no reason to hate humans. I just couldn’t get over how friendly the animals were. Except for the iguanas they just looked at you like you were an annoyance...or maybe it was just their face.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DAY ONE BUDGET BREAKDOWN:
Walked from airport to town: Free (20 minutes) Only can do this if you fly into San Cristobal since the airport is close to town.
Walked around looking for hotels (I didn’t book ANYTHING in advance because I was going during low season.) Ended up getting a room for $15 a night with a nice fan, private bathroom and double bed. So if you are traveling in a couple or with not solo it will be $15 for a room for two. If you are staying a few nights you can barter for a better price. For example I told them I was going to stay for 5 nights and if I could get the room for $12 they said yes. I probably could have got it for $10 if I really wanted.L
Lunch special (includes soup, main course and drink) : $3.50
Mangos: $1
Apple (huge): $0.80
Dinner: $2.00
Sea lions: Free as they are EVERYWHERE
TOTAL: $23.30
Under budget yay! (This will catch up to me as I do some expensive tours.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As this Video is from DAY TWO here is my breakdown of costs for my first day excluding Flight and Entrance fee:
Hotel: $15
Breakfast: $3.50
Lunch special (includes soup, main course and drink) : $3.50
Apple: $0.50
Dinner: $4.00
Sea lions: Free as they are EVERYWHERE
Walking to the beaches and research center: Free
Snorkeling: Free*
TOTAL: $26.50
Under budget yay!
*I brought my own snorkel gear which I highly recommend since I was always in the water they cost me $14 USD in Quito but I got very cheap ones that fogged up. I would recommend getting a better set made from glass not plastic.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All prices are from 2015 and in USD
Budget: $30/day in the Galapagos for 22 days
Entrance fee : $100 USD (Galapagos National Park Fee everyone pays as soon as you land.)
Visa: $10 There is also a random visa which is $10.
Flight to Galapagos from Quito, Ecuador Roundtrip: $320
I figured since I was spending $100 to go to the Galapagos I was going to spend 3 weeks there. The biggest cost was getting their and the entrance fee as the actual costs of hotels and food is similar to the mainland Ecuador.
TOTAL: $430

San Cristobal is located in the far south east of the Galapagos archipelago. With a newly refurbished airstrip it has become one of two arrival points to the islands as well as the provincial capital Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is also where you will have a chance to visit the interpretation center which opened in 1998. This is a very informative site, built to give visitors an overview of the natural and human history of the Galapagos as well as plans for the future.
Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido)White shark off of chatham
This vertical rock off the northwest coast of San Cristobal juts up approximately 500 feet straight out of the water. As you approach from San Cristobal it will have the appearance of a boot, giving it the name Kicker Rock. As you get closer and cruise around towards the north face, you will have the opportunity to spot blue footed boobies, masked boobies and magnificent frigate birds.
Genovesa (Tower Island)
Located in the far north east of the archipelago, Genovesa is home to some of the most spectacular bird watching in the Galapagos. Most visits include a stop at Prince Philips steps and Darwin Bay. Both locations are superb for viewing the abundance of birdlife, including swallow-tailed gulls, storm petrels, frigate birds and tropic birds. At times the sky seems filled with birds. You will also see Red Footed Boobies which, like the frigate bird, nest in the branches of the low lying shrubs. (Breeding Season is from September to July.) Aside from birdlife, Genovesa is also a great place for snorkeling. With small cliffs lining the bay, there is a diverse array of sea life that lives around these rocky outcroppings as well as on the sandy bottom.
Fernandina
Fernandina is the westernmost island in the Galapagos, located just a short distance from Isabela. One of the youngest islands in the Galapagos, Fernadina remains one of the most highly active volcanic islands, with its main crater approximately 6.5 kilometers wide. Due to its young age and lack of precipitation, it does not have the rich flora that other islands such as Santa Cruz or San Cristobal do. This allows only a certain group of animals to thrive here, most notably the flightless cormorant. Punta Espinoza is the main area of visit, offering great contrast between the green mangroves, black lava flows, and turquoise waters. The island is also home to the largest colony of sea iguanas in the Galapagos.
Urbina Bay
Urbina Bay is located south of Tagus Cove on the western coast of Isabela and is largely known for a 5 kilometer section that was uplifted some 4 meters in a geological event in 1954, leaving sea life stranded above the ocean. From Urbina Bay you will also have the chance to cruise through large Mangroves as well as search for Giant Tortoises.
Like many other islands in the Galapagos, North Seymour was uplifted by underground seismic activity. Its location just north of Baltra makes this one of the most visited islands in the Galapagos, with visitors coming for day trips from Puerto Ayora as well as on scheduled cruises. North Seymour is home to the largest nesting ground of magnificent frigate birds and a great place to see the males display their large red pouches in hopes of attracting a mate. This is also a place with an abundance of sea lions, land iguanas and blue footed boobies.
Many tours to Santa Fe will also include a hike to the top of a distant cliff in search of land iguanas, which are distinct to this island and can grow to be over five feet long. You will also notice the towering opuntia cactus, which grow to heights of over 30 feet in order to protect themselves from the land iguanas.
