From Sary Tash to Kashgar over the Irkeshtam Pass
A walk around Sary Tash, the junction between the roads to Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and China. I then boarded a truck and hitched a ride over to Kashgar in China.

We made it across China in 28 days and finally crossed in to Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia together with some other travellers. Entering Kyrgyzstan with it's green rolling hills was a great contrast to the desert of China where we'd spent the last couple of weeks.

[Irkeshtam Pass] Hitchhiking on the truck from the Kyrgyz/Chinese Border to the Immigration Centre
If you are cycling around the world and go through Central Asia (as you should!!). There are two routes to go from Kyrgyzstan to China: The Irkeshtam Pass or the Torugart Pass.
I chose the Irkeshtam as there were reports that you have to get an expensive taxi ride over the border at the Torugart Pass.
It seems that 12 months prior to my arrival, the Chinese have built a new immigration centre 140 kms from the border and do not allow cyclists to cycle to it. Instead they point you towards a taxi where they ask for $100 !!
I argued with the Chinese Army officer and he eventually put me on a flatbed truck where I only had to pay 100 Yuan ($17).

The Irkeshtam pass, Erkeshtam Border Crossing, is the easiest border crossing between Kyrgyzstan (Osh – Sary Tash) and China (Kashgar), and really, it’s not that easy (the landscape is spectacular though). The other border crossing from Kyrgyzstan into China is the Torugart pass. Tajikistan’s crossing with China, the Qolma Pass, is still closed to foreigners.
Many people manage to cross between Kashgar and Osh in one long day, but it is not certain, so stock up on food (there are some dining options at the border, though). The Irkeshtam pass is busy year-round.
The Kyrgyz checkpoint at the pass operates from 9 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 6 pm, Monday to Friday. An early start is recommended. Reports and questions can be read and posted here for China to Kyrgyzstan, and here for Kyrgyzstan to China. (Source: )

After a couple of hours of enjoying the views around Sary Tash it was time to grab our backpacks and hitchhike to Osh where we would spend 3 nights couchsurfing with a Kyrgyz family.

Here I was all by myself and tried to reflect a bit on how it is to travel alone :)

The long Road (TlR) is a journey from Germany all the way to Nepal, through the middle east, following the old silk road, China and South-East Asia. The whole journey will be overland (no planes, UFOs or portals) and put together into short videos on this channel :)
