Arriving in Granada Nicaragua | What to do in Nicaragua Granada
Volcano boarding in Nicaragua lived up to the hype, and then some! After a few days in Leon, Nicaragua, I was heading off to the colonial town of Granada. NIcaragua is definitely the most unique country that I have been to in Central America. You can feel the touch of the Spanish here, more than any other country. The big columns, the colourful buildings, the clay tile roofs. Nicaragua, has to be the most scenic, and Granada, the cherry on top.
I took the bus from Leon Nicaragua, through the capital of Managua, and as the outskirts of Managua start to thin, the outskirts of Granada start to thicken. Managua sprawling so much, there was very little gap between the two cities and on the crowded, hot, bumpy bus, I was itching to get on some solid ground to walk. The first beautiful church in the town of Granada, was as much as I could take. I jumped out threw my big bag on my back and walked around, instantly impressed.
See more videos from Nicaragua, including upcoming video from Laguna de Apoyo, just outside of Granada, as well as Coyotepe Prison, also near Granada Nicaragua, and then onto Isla Ometepe and San Juan del Sur!

Las Isletas Tour, Granada, Nicaragua
When the Mombacho Volcano erupted thousands of years ago, it threw huge rocks into Lake Nicaragua. As a result of this violent eruption 365 islets were formed in front of Granada. The islets differ in size between a hundred square meters and over one hundred hectares. The islets serve different purposes. There is a community of about 1200 people living on the islets. Most of the people living here are fishermen. Other islets accommodate hotels, bars, and restaurants or luxurious houses mostly owned by foreigners, who only stay for a few days of the year. There are islets containing spider, howler and white face monkeys plus uninhabited islets with only some palm trees growing on it. This was a $20 tour lasting approx four hours with a stop off at one of the islets bars where you could have a relaxing drink or go swimming in the lake. It was a beautiful day with a funny episode when one of the monkeys boarded the boat unexpectedly and wouldn't leave. It was particularly funny when another tour boat pulled in front of our boat trying to spot the monkeys not realising there was one behind them !!!
Monkeying about in Las Isletas, Granada | Nicaragua With Kids
When Mombacho Volcano erupted thousands of years ago it blew large chunks of its cone into Lake Nicaragua, creating hundreds of small islands known today as Las Isletas. Positioned roughly 5km from Granada’s centre, these islets are easy to access and fun to explore, either by boat or kayak. As my son was recovering from a minor head injury we were under doctor’s orders not to get his wound wet. Boating it was to be then! Join us as we weave our way around the many islets, and get a surprise visit by 'Lucy' the spider monkey.
