Issyk-Kul Lake in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan
Issyk-Kul is a pearl of Central Asia.
Issyk-Kul lake, the second-largest alpine lake in the world (after Lake Titicaca in Peru/Bolivia), gives its name to the oblast that surrounds the lake’s shoreline and extends across the high Tien Shan range south to the Chinese border. The lake’s name, which is also spelled Ysyk Kol or Issyk-kol, means literally ‘warm lake’ in the Kyrgyz language, as does its Chinese equivalent, Ze-Hai.
There is good reason for this: in a part of the world where winter temperatures can plummet to -25°C or worse, the shores of the lake have a microclimate that is relatively balmy and, even more aptly, its waters never freeze. This is all the more surprising considering the lake stands at considerable altitude – 1,606m above sea level. Scientists have long debated the precise mechanics of this, and it would seem it is down to a combination of deep-water physics, slight salinity and underground thermal activity.
Most locals are less questioning and are merely grateful for the respite the lake offers, assuming it is because the water is warmed by heat wafting up from the earth’s core.
Issyk-Kul Lake is 182 kilometres long, up to 60 kilometres wide, and its area is 6,236 square kilometres. It is the second largest mountain lake in the world behind Lake Titicaca in South America. It is at an altitude of 1,607 metres, and reaches 668 metres in depth. About 118 rivers and streams flow into the lake; the largest are the Djyrgalan and Tyup. It is fed by springs, including many hot springs, and snow melt. The lake has no current outlet, but some hydrologists hypothesize that the lake's water filters deep underground into the Chu River. The bottom of the lake contains the mineral monohydrocalcite: one of the few known lacustrine deposits.
Wildlife of Issyk-Kul region includes 50 species of mammals, 285 species of birds, 11 species of reptiles, 31 species of fish, 4 species of amphibians.
The lake contains highly endemic fish biodiversity, and some of the species, including four endemics, are seriously endangered. In recent years catches of all species of fish have declined markedly, due to a combination of over-fishing, heavy predation by two of the introduced species, and the cessation of lake restocking with juvenile fish from hatcheries. At least four commercially targeted endemic fish species are sufficiently threatened to be included in the Red Book of the Kyrgyz Republic: Schmidt's dace (Leuciscus schmidti), Issyk-Kul dace (Leuciscus bergi), marinka (Schizothorax issyk-kuli), and sheer or naked osman (Diptychus dybovskii). Seven other endemic species are almost certainly threatened as by-catch or are indirectly impacted by fishing activity and changes to the structure and balance of the lake's fish population.

Tandeming to Karakol
Whilst taking a break from my world unicycle tour I decided to make a tandem bicycle tour - as you do! We followed the south bank of lake Issyk-Kul from Balykchy to Karakol. Found 3 stunningly beautiful wild campsites, fought through the rain and met a shepherd full of wisdom!

Our visit Karakol travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide, top sightseeing tourist attractions and all of the adventure travel activities you can do in Karakol including hiking, boating and visiting mountains. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Karakol city tourism brochure, Karakol itinerary or Karakol, Kyrgyzstan city tour.
15 Things to do in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan Travel Guide video transcript:
Hey guys this week we are in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan. Yeah, so Karakol (Каракол) is a place that we've actually visited last year but we were only here on a day trip so we didn't get to see a whole lot. Right and this is basically the adventure capital of Kyrgyzstan. There is a lot of good hiking, you can take boat trips. So we're just going to show you like what you can do in and around this area. Let's
Our first stop was the Dungan Mosque. This mosque is unique because architecturally it looks a lot like a Buddhist temple; this is because it was built by the Dungan community, an ethnically Chinese people group who follow Islam.
Another iconic place of worship in Karakol (Каракол) is the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. This is a traditional Russian wooden cathedral complete with onion domes.
We also squeezed in a quick visit to Karakol’s History Museum, which has a rather fascinating taxidermy collection.
Okay so it is dinner time here in Karakol (قاراقول) and the sun has gone down and today we are going to be doing a traditional meal with a family.
So we're going to be preparing Ashlyanfu (Ашлян-фу) which is a cold noodle starch soup and then we're going to go into their home and have a nice family dinner together.
And because we love our food, we also took a cooking class where we learned to make a traditional Uyghur dish: laghman (Лагман).
As far as day trips go, one nearby attraction from Karakol (Каракол) is Jeti Oguz known for its red hills. It’s about a 30 minute drive and you can easily hire a driver to take you out there.
Last but not least, one of the most popular things to do in Karakol (Каракол) is hiking. This is considered the adventure capital of Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) with many hikes and horse treks starting right in town.
And that’s a little taste of what Karakol and the surrounding area has to offer visitors. We hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Karakol (Каракол).
This is part of our Travel in Kyrgyzstan video series showcasing Kyrgyz food, Kyrgyz culture and Kyrgyz cuisine.

Issyk Kul Lake | YURT CAMP ON A BEACH! UNBELIEVABLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE IN KYRGYZSTAN (Just Wow!)
Issyk Kul Lake | YURT CAMP ON A BEACH! UNBELIEVABLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE IN KYRGYZSTAN (Just Wow!)
This yurt stay was genuinely one of our highlights of our time in Kyrgyzstan. This beautiful yurt camp is located right on the south shore of Issyk Kul lake. You can literally stroll out of your yurt and onto the beach, where you can swim, sunbathe and relax by Issyk Kul lake, with the stunning backdrop of the Tien Shan mountains.
This place seems to be less well known than other yurt camps in the area - so really is a hidden gem. The yurts themselves are very comfortable and well equipped - and of a similar standard to most yurt camps in Kyrgystan. There are some quite small yurts so it is worth checking what you are booking.
This yurt camp is also the closest accommodation that we could find for the beautiful Skazka canyon. Check out our video on Skazka canyon here:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Planning a visit?
The yurt camp is called: Oimo Tash Ethno-complex. LINK TO COME HOLD TIGHT! :-)
Yurts cost around 1,000 Som (about £10) if you are happy to rock up and see what they have. If you would like to book in advance it will cost more but at least you will know you have a place to stay.
There are also toilets, showers and a restaurant in the complex. The food is good and pretty cheap. We were even able to buy a bottle of wine to enjoy on the beach.
At present the Oimo Tash yurt camp is incorrectly pinned on google maps. It is located a few km to the West of Skazka Canyon and is right by the lake. It is easy to spot if you are keeping an eye out towards the lake.
We loved our stay here! We were really surprised that they are available to book in advance, but glad they are as we realised we were lucky to get a spot! After we arrived loads of people turned up.
If you have any questions about logistics here, please just ask!
