Amazing Buried City in Turkey Built During 12,000 B.C. | Ancient Aliens
Evidence of a 12,000 year old civilization - almost 7,000 years older than Mesopotamia's fertile crescent - is unearthed in the Turkish countryside, known as Göbekli Tepe. It took archaeologists 13 years to uncover only 5% of the buried city.

At the crossroads of the East and the West, Turkish culture, from its cuisine to social life, bears the traces of different cultures.
Day 12 (Istanbul Iftar)
Day 12 (Sun July 6th)
When we got ready we went to the Metro, took a bus and walked to breakfast at this place on the Bosphorus. It was packed! It was also hot, but I felt better after some water. We ordered the Turkish breakfast supreme and it came with a basket of breads (all different kinds - one was chocolate bread which kinda tasted like a donut). It also had deep fried cheezy roll up things, pita, olives, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, 2 different types of cheese, clotted cream with honey (the best!!!) fried cheese, tahini sauce, chai, and this stuff in a skillet that had like cheese and tomato and herbs and stuff which you put in the pita. this was the best meal we have had in Turkey I think.
When we finished we walked along the Bosphorus to a bus stop and then got on a bus to go home. When we arrived, we started cramming in Top Chef so we could finish the season before we left. We also ate some Ramadan bread which was so soft and buttery. Yum!
After two episodes we took a Metro, a funicular and a train to get to Sultan Amet. Once there, we bought some bread and soup and found a place on the grass to lay down our blankets to break the fast with everyone. Our spot was by a dog and Ian started petting it and the lady on the bench in front of us started yelling/talking to him. No clue what she said. Anyways, we sat and hung out until the call to prayer.
It was so cool to see and there were so many people! We had a great time and it was such an amazing last day in Istanbul to be immersed in the culture. When we got home we started packing and watched the last episode of Top Chef. Richard Blaise won, which I was really happy about. I think I want to watch more seasons!
Ephesus - Efes - Eφεσος - Turkey - Old Ancient Temple
The ancient city of Ephesus (Turkish: Efes), located near the Aegean Sea in modern day Turkey, was one of the great cities of the Greeks in Asia Minor and home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Today, the ruins of Ephesus are a major tourist attraction, especially for travelers on Mediterranean cruises. Ephesus is also a sacred site for Christians due to its association with several biblical figures, including St. Paul, St. John the Evangelist and the Virgin Mary. The religious history of ancient Ephesus was the subject of the webmaster's thesis at Oxford (completed in June 2007), so this section is even more comprehensive than most.
Ephesus was an ancient Greek city, and later a major Roman city, on the coast of Ionia, near present-day Selçuk, İzmir Province, Turkey.
Ephesus which was established as a port, was used to be the most important commercial centre. It played a great role in the ancient times with its strategic location. Ephesus is located on a very fertile valley.
Ephesus is an important tourism centre in Turkey.
The ancient city Ephesus is located in Selcuk, a small town 30km away from Kusadasi.
Gobekli Tepe in Turkey 12000 Years Old Temple
Göbekli Tepe, is a hilltop sanctuary erected on the highest point of an elongated mountain ridge some 15 km northeast of the town of Şanliurfa, in southeastern Turkey and 500 miles away from Istanbul, Turkey. It is the most astonishing archaeological discovery in modern times and also thought to be the oldest advanced civilization on Earth.
The tell includes two phases of ritual use dating back to the 10th-8th millennium BC. During the first phase (Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA)), circles of massive T-shaped stone pillars were erected. More than 200 pillars in about 20 circles are currently known through geophysical surveys. Each pillar has a height of up to 6 m (20 ft) and a weight of up to 20 tons. They are fitted into sockets that were hewn out of the bedrock.[5] In the second phase (Pre-pottery Neolithic B (PPNB)), the erected pillars are smaller and stood in rectangular rooms with floors of polished lime. The site was abandoned after the PPNB-period. Younger structures date to classical times.
The function of the structures is not yet clear. Excavator Klaus Schmidt believed that they are early neolithic sanctuaries.
day760 : The Basilica Cistern @Turkey
DAY760 : UNDERGROUND RESERVOIR UNDERNEATH TRAM
Istanbul has been the capital for 1600 years since the Roman Empire. Their history is way too complicated to grasp just by going through some of the articles on the internet. Walking around in the old town, we often ran into some sort of historical sites like castle walls, mosques, houses and markets that we have no clue what they are. It didn't take too long to pay no attention and just walk through. We spent so much time just reminiscing about the city far back, being admired and a bit lost at coffee shops. Enough for my remains-fetish wife to say she was confused. The so-called Underground Palace is Roman ancient cisterns built in the 6th Century that lie right underneath a tram line which runs through very touristic area with an Osman Emperor palace remain and huge mosques. It blows my mind to imagine tons of tourists walking around right above such a gigantic cistern. It provided water since Japan was in the Yayoi Period. I was so amazed that I started to doubt. The aqueduct bridge which deliver water into the cistern still remains in good condition. With a little bit of suspicion and much admiration, we took a break at a nearby coffee shop.

Missing NYC woman found dead in Turkey
Report: Missing NYC woman found dead in Turkey
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A New York City woman who went missing while vacationing alone in Istanbul was found dead on Saturday, and police were questioning 11 people in connection with the case, Turkey's state-run news agency said.
Sarai Sierra, a 33-year-old mother of two, was last heard from on Jan. 21, the day she was to fly home. Her disappearance attracted a lot of interest in Turkey, where the disappearance of tourists is rare, and Istanbul police had set up a special unit to find her.
The state-run Anadolu Agency said the body of a woman was discovered Saturday evening near the remnants of ancient city walls and that police later identified it as Sierra's.
The agency said she was found with a head wound and a blanket near her body. She was wearing jeans, a jumper and a jacket, and still had her earrings and a bracelet.
Police reached by The Associated Press refused to comment on the case.
Sierra, whose children are 9 and 11, had left for Istanbul on Jan. 7 to explore her photography hobby and made a side trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Munich, Germany. She had originally planned to travel with a friend, but ended up traveling alone when her friend canceled.
She was in regular contact with friends and relatives, and was last in touch with her family on Jan. 21, the day she was due back in New York. She told them she would visit Galata Bridge, which spans Istanbul's Golden Horn waterway, to take photos.
The body was found not far from the bridge and near a major road that runs alongside the sea of Marmara. Here tourists often photograph dozens of tankers waiting to access the Bosporus strait.
On Saturday, police stopped traffic there as forensic police inspected the area.
Anadolu suggested Sierra may have been killed at another location and that her body may have been brought to the site to be hidden there.
At least 11 people were being questioned in Istanbul, Anadolu said, and a police official at the site told journalists that two of them were women. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters about the case. Earlier, Anadolu had said nine people were detained.
It was not clear if a Turkish man Sierra had exchanged emails with during her stay in Istanbul was among those being questioned. He was detained for questioning Friday, then released. Turkish news reports said Sierra had arranged to meet the man on Galata Bridge, but he reportedly told police the meeting never took place.
Shortly after her body was discovered, a woman came forward and told police she had seen a white car parked near the city walls as she was driving there the night of Jan. 29, Anadolu reported. She said a man was trying to remove something from the car.
At that moment, I noticed a woman's hand, Anadolu quoted the woman as telling reporters after talking with police. The agency said she declined to give her name.
Sierra's husband, Steven, and her brother, David Jimenez, traveled to Istanbul to help search for her. Sierra's mother, Betzaida Jimenez, said Saturday that she couldn't talk about the case when reached in New York.
Shortly after Sierra was reported missing, Turkey set up a special police unit which scanned hours of security camera footage in downtown Istanbul in search of clues. A Turkish missing persons association joined the search, handing out flyers with photos of Sierra and urging anyone with information to call police.
While break-ins and petty thievery are common in Istanbul, the vast and crowded city is considered relatively safe compared to other major urban centers. Sierra's death was unlikely to have a significant impact on tourism, a large component of the Turkish economy.
In 2008, an Italian artist, Pippa Bacca, was raped and killed while hitchhiking to Israel wearing a wedding dress to plead for peace. Her naked body was found in a forest in northwest Turkey. A Turkish man was sentenced to life in prison for the attack.
Researchers In Turkey Believe This Mountain Is The Final Resting Place Of Noah’s Ark
Researchers In Turkey Believe This Mountain Is The Final Resting Place Of Noah’s Ark
Can it be possible that the remains of Noah’s Ark have been discovered? Well, researchers in Turkey claim to have done just that. For many people the story of Noah’s Ark is just that – a good story. But for others, the biblical tale of the Ark is one that can be taken literally. And…

Terry's BS dialog about our trip
In the spring of 2009 Ruth & I flew to Istanbul, direct from Houston, Texas. We had a return fight booked for 45 days later and a hotel booked for 3 days in Istanbul. We had no clue what we would do after arrival. Our friends and neighbors told Ruth that I was crazy and a lousy husband, that if I loved her I should take her somewhere safe, like maybe Hawaii. The first day in Istanbul we fell in love with Turkey. The people were the friendliest we had met anywhere in the world. There is so much to see and do in Istanbul you cannot stay there too long. If you are on a budget there are good hotels within a short walk to the major sights for under $50, and up to $500 all in the same area. We would highly recommend staying in the Topkapi or Sultanahmet area because that's where most of the action is. I would recommend the hotel where we stayed but I could not currently find it on Venere.com where we normally book hotels on foreign travel. We had a sitting room and two bedrooms for a price of $50 per day and they picked us up and returned us to the airport.
