STORYLINE:
US Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to start his four-day visit to China.
His first engagement was attending a basketball match between the Georgetown University Hoyas and the Shan Xi Province team.
Biden watched the friendly match sitting beside the new US Ambassador to China, Gary Locke.
Georgetown eventually won the contest 91-69.
Concerns about the US economy and the country''s ability to manage its debt and deficits loom over Biden''s trip to China - America''s biggest foreign creditor.
Aides say Biden will tell Chinese leaders that the US is committed to tackling its fiscal problems and will emphasise aspects of the recent deal to increase the US debt ceiling that the administration believes are good first steps toward long-term deficit reduction.
China, the world''s second largest economy, owns 1.2 (tr) trillion US dollars of US Treasury debt - the largest holding by any foreign country.
China has called the debate over raising the US debt ceiling a sign of political crisis in Washington and has said that overspending on foreign military adventures was to blame for much of America''s current financial woes.
Biden is expected to continue the US push for China to allow its currency to rise in value against the dollar, as well as the currencies of its other major trading partners.
Human rights, Taiwan and Tibet are also expected to be on Biden''s agenda in China.

USA: GORE ARRIVES IN LOS ANGELES 1
English/Nat
U-S Vice President Al Gore has arrived in Los Angeles to claim his Democratic presidential nomination.
Al Gore and his wife Tipper flew into Burbank Airport on Wednesday.
At a welcoming rally, he told supports the victory starts in California.
As Air Force Two pulled up to a hangar in Burbank, a mariachi band played and union loyalists cheered.
The presidential hopeful arrived in the host city just moments before the Democratic National Convention was called into session for its third day.
Wednesday night Gore will watch his vice presidential nominee's acceptance speech and see delegates ratify his nomination.
At the arrival rally, Lieberman ventured a pun on Ronald Reagan's familiar line about the Gipper.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I've been waiting for a week to say this line and I can't control myself anymore; in this election will you help me win this one for the Tipper.
SUPER CAPTION: Joseph Lieberman, Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate
Having worked on the plane to polish his Thursday acceptance speech, Gore told the crowd that they could expect a full account of his plans.
Those include school improvements, a patients' bill of rights, a hate crimes law, a Medicare prescription drug benefit, stricter gun controls and greater environmental protection.
As he prepared to pick up the party's nomination, Gore predicted that the beginning of a victory in November would start in Los Angeles.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The future starts in California. The victory starts in California. With you help we'll win. I need your help to fight for you. God bless you and thank you.
SUPER CAPTION: Al Gore, Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate
Thursday is Gore's chance to emerge from Clinton's shadow and introduce himself to the nation as a leader and his own man.
Gore's chief strategist Carter Eskew made no bones about the importance of Gore's speech accepting the party's top nomination.
Eskew said, This is his main chance to be the main guy.

STORYLINE:
US Vice-President Joseph Biden arrived in Georgia on a working visit on Wednesday.
At the international airport he was welcomed by Georgian Prime Minister Nika Galauri, Deputy Foreign Minister Giga Bokeria, US Ambassador to Georgia John F. Tefft and other officials.
Hundreds of flag-waving Georgians lined the streets of Tbilisi to welcome Biden following his arrival in the former Soviet republic.
It has been almost a year since a war with Russia turned Georgia, a small nation on the far frontier of Europe, into the epicentre of the simmering conflict between Moscow and the West.
US President Barack Obama's attempt to rebuild relations with Russia has raised concerns among some of Russia's East European neighbours that the US might abandon their interests.
Biden has been attempting to assuage those concerns on a four-day trip to Ukraine and Georgia.
Speaking during a speech in Kiev, Ukraine, earlier on Wednesday, Biden reiterated the US' stance.
As we reset the relationship with Russia, we reaffirm our commitment to an independent Ukraine and we recognise no sphere of influence or no ability of any other nation to veto the choices an independent nation makes, Biden told the audience.
The speech followed a breakfast meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko early on Wednesday.
Biden also reiterated Washington's support for Ukraine's NATO membership, if Ukrainians decide to pursue that goal.
Currently, more than half of the country is against it.
He called on the feuding Ukrainian leaders to seek compromise and concentrate on reforming a devastated economy.
Biden is expected to hold two days of talks with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and opposition leaders to demonstrate support for the loyal US ally.
The Russia-Georgia war capped years of increasing tensions between the West and Russia, a country key to US and European efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons, battle security threats and secure Europe's energy supplies.
Saakashvili has said he tried to defend Georgia from Russian aggression, and he announced a series of political reforms on Monday meant to address his critics' complaints that his administration was restricting rights.

ARIRANG NEWS 10:00 Viewers in Southern California enjoy ArirangTV on DIRECTV
It's been a week since Arirang TV -- Korea's only global broadcasting network -- found a new TV home in the United States.
In case you didn't already know,... Arirang TV is now available on America's number one satellite television provider, DIRECTV, on channel number 20-95.
We now go live to our Hwang Ji-hye in Los Angeles to see how people in southern California are enjoying their new channel thus far.
Ji-hye
- : - Wilshire Blvd., L.A.
- 7th St., L.A.
JH: Mark, it's been an exciting week for Arirang as people not only here in LA but across the U.S. now have even easier access to Arirang TV programming.
In fact, we are currently in the house of an avid Arirang viewer... This is Choi Jung-in,... thank you for letting us in, Jung-in...
How do you like it that Arirang is now available on DIRECTV?
It's great to have Arirang on DIRECTV
Alright, thanks for speaking to us today, Jung-in.
Now... DIRECTV is beamed into households all across the U.S., but viewers can also watch Arirang TV on DIRECTV at airports, hotels, hospitals and more,... giving Arirang an even greater reach. Here at this hotel in southern Los Angeles, Arirang TV on DIRECTV is available free of charge to
guests.
We never used to have Arirang TV on DIRECTV but since we are located in Wilshire and Western -- in the middle of Korea Town -- it's good to have Arirang TV for our guests.
Starting last Thursday,... DIRECTV customers in the United States could find Arirang TV in their channel line-up on channel number 20-95... as the Korean broadcasting station has been added to DIRECTV's programming as a public interest channel.
DIRECTV, based in Southern California, is America's number one satellite television provider that competes with cable TV.
K-pop lovers, Riley and Allyson, who are huge fans of Arirang TV's After School Club program say... they're delighted to have Arirang TV on DIRECTV.
It's really convenient, we can just turn on the channel and the k-pop shows are already there.
We don't have to search for it on the internet anymore we can just watch it on TV so it's a lot easier.
In the meantime, Arirang CEO Sohn Jie-ae says she's confident the Korean broadcasting station will be able to raise awareness of Korea and Korean culture in the U.S.
Guys?
It's fabulous news that more people in the U.S. can enjoy all the programming Arirang TV has to offer. Thanks, Ji-hye. That was our Hwang Ji-hye reporting on Arirang TV's inclusion on America's number one satellite television provider, DIRECTV.
Santa Rosa Fire Before & After - Coffey Park & Fountaingrove - 4k Aerial Drone Footage
Before and after footage of the Tubbs Fire in Santa Rosa, California.
In April 2017 I captured footage of Coffey Park and Fountaingrove Round Barn in Santa Rosa. After the fires I went back and filmed the same shots I had taken before. I was born and raised here in Sonoma County. I spent many years playing with friends and having sleepovers in Coffey Park. Still hard to wrap my head around the scope of so much destruction. Both Coffey Park and The Round Barn were completely lost to the fires that ravaged Sonoma County in October 2017.

About the fires:
On October 8th, 2017, around 9:45 p.m, a fire broke out near Tubbs Lane in Calistoga California. Pushed by strong winds, the front of the fire moved more than twelve miles in its first three hours. The Mark West Springs area, north of Santa Rosa, was directly in the path of the fire.
By 1 a.m. the fire had reached Santa Rosa city limits. It quickly moved into the Fountaingrove area and burned hundreds of homes as well as many other structures. The historic Fountaingrove Inn, the Fountaingrove Round Barn, and a large Hilton hotel were destroyed. Nearly all of the 160 units at the Journey's End mobile home park were turned to rubble.
At about 1:30 a.m., Sonoma County officials began to evacuate neighborhoods in and around Santa Rosa.
By about 2 a.m., the fire, carried by near hurricane-level winds, had spread further to the west, crossing Highway 101. By 4:30 a.m., the winds had reached their peak speed of more than 60 miles per hour. Quickly the fire spread to the Coffey Park neighborhood, where it leveled most of the area. An estimated 1,300 structures were destroyed. Other damage along several streets bordering Highway 101 included a Kmart store and numerous restaurants that burned to the ground.
By noon the next day, two medical centers in Santa Rosa, Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health, had been evacuated. Some Kaiser employees reported using their personal vehicles to evacuate some of the 130 patients at that hospital.
Other damage included the complete loss of a senior living complex, Oakmont of Villa Capri; Hidden Valley Satellite, a primary school; and the Santa Rosa portion of Paradise Ridge Winery. The Cardinal Newman High School campus was badly damaged, as was one end of the Luther Burbank Center for the Performing Arts. Redwood Adventist Academy was also lost in the fire. Nearly 500 homes in the Larkfield-Wikiup area, were completely destroyed.
By October 14, fires had burned more than 210,000 acres while forcing 90,000 people to evacuate from their homes. The Northern California fires killed at least 44 people and hospitalized at least 185, making the week of October 8, 2017, the deadliest week of wildfires in California history. Collectively, the event constitutes the largest loss of life due to wildfires in the United States since the Cloquet Fire in 1918. In total, an estimated 8,900 structures were destroyed and at least $9.4 billion dollars in damages lost.
Fog grounded choppers at time of Bryant crash
(27 Jan 2020) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus130015, apus130024, apus130028
The helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant and eight others that crashed into a rugged hillside outside Los Angeles was flying in foggy conditions considered dangerous enough that local police agencies grounded their choppers.
The helicopter plunged into a steep hillside at about 9:45 a.m. Sunday with an impact that scattered debris over an area the size of a football field and killed all aboard. The accident unleashed an outpouring of grief from admirers around the country who mourned the sudden loss of the all-time basketball great who spent his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Thousands of fans, many wearing Bryant jerseys and chanting his name, gathered outside the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, home of the Lakers and site of Sunday's Grammy Awards where Bryant was honored.
The 41-year-old Bryant, who perished with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, was one of the game’s most popular players and the face of the 16-time NBA champion Lakers.
The cause of the crash was unknown, but conditions at the time were such that the Los Angeles Police Department and the county sheriff's department grounded their helicopters.
The Los Angeles County medical examiner, Dr. Jonathan Lucas, said the rugged terrain complicated efforts to recover the remains. He estimated it would take at least a couple of days to complete that task before identifications can be made.
Bryant’s helicopter left Santa Ana in Orange County, south of Los Angeles, shortly after 9 a.m. and circled for a time just east of Interstate 5, near Glendale. Air traffic controllers noted poor visibility around Burbank, just to the north, and Van Nuys, to the northwest.
After holding up the helicopter for other aircraft, they cleared the Sikorsky S-76 to proceed north along Interstate 5 through Burbank before turning west to follow U.S Route 101, the Ventura Highway.
Shortly after 9:40 a.m., the helicopter turned again, toward the southeast, and climbed to more than 2000 feet (609 meters). It then descended and crashed into the hillside at about 1400 feet (426 meters), according to data from Flightradar24.
When it struck the ground, the helicopter was flying at about 160 knots (184 mph) and descending at a rate of more than 4000 feet per minute, the data showed.
The chopper went down in Calabasas, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Bryant's Mamba Sports Academy in nearby Thousand Oaks was holding a basketball tournament on Sunday.
Federal transportation safety investigators were on their way to the scene. Among other things, they will look at the pilot's history, the chopper's maintenance records and the records of its owner and operator, said NTSB board member Jennifer Homendy at a news conference.

Operation Overwatch 2009: Army National Guard BDUs / ACUS at SLO grill
August 11, 2009, 7:17 p.m. Carrie, Kim & Daryl observed approximately 25 to 30 U.S. Army National Guard soldiers publicly dining in their BATTLE DRESS UNIFORMS (BDUs) at Laguna Grill Restaurant & environs in the shopping center on Los Osos Valley Road in San Luis Obispo, California AS IF IT'S NORMAL & RIGHT TO DO SO. (It used to be illegal for soldiers to wander the streets in their BDUs & for very good reason! American travelers used to be so glad to return home to American soil, because there were NO SOLDIERS ON THE STREETS as they had seen in other countries. But no more!)
Btw, the UNITED STATES ARMY NATIONAL GUARD is the FEDERALIZED version of the National Guard, which is under the direct control & command of the President of the corporate United States & NOT the state version, which is supposed to be under the direct control & command of the Governor of the state. Get it? This is acclimatization. This is conditioning. This is soft martial law. Soldiers milling around the streets of America like it's nothing. Like it's a tinpot dictatorship, or banana republic, or something. Minus the guns, of course. But worry not. That's next.
According to the DoD website, over 100,000 National Guardsmen have been federalized to date. This is at least 10 to 20 times more than any other branch of the military:
Check it out:
Army National Guard/Army Reserve = 112,248
Navy Reserve = 6,651
Air National Guard/Air Force Reserve = 14,128
Marine Corps Reserve = 8,744
Coast Guard Reserve = 642
TOTAL = 142,413

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD FEDERAL MISSION STATEMENT:
During peacetime each state National Guard answers to leadership in the 50 states, three territories and the District of Columbia. During national emergencies, however, the President reserves the right to mobilize the National Guard, putting them in federal duty status.
While federalized, the units answer to the Combatant Commander of the theatre in which they are operating and, ultimately, to the President.
Even when not federalized, the Army National Guard has a federal obligation (or mission.) That mission is to maintain properly trained and equipped units, available for prompt mobilization for war, national emergency, or as otherwise needed.
The Army National Guard is a partner with the Active Army and the Army Reserves in fulfilling the country's military needs.

Biden was scheduled to appear at a local business establishment with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti for a 1 p.m. event on raising the minimum wage.
