Titanic Graveyard Fairview Lawn Cemetery All the Tombs (Halifax Canada)
121 victims of the RMS Titanic sinking are buried at Fairview, many with named tombstones but also many unidentified. A baby's tomb was for nearly a 100 years identified as The unknown child was finally identified as Sidney Leslie Goodwin lost along with his whole family. The Gravestones are arranged in the shape of a ship with the 'Unknown Child' at the prow. People leave coins and momentoes on the tomb of the Baby Goodwin, I wish we had brought something. Girls used to leave flowers on the Gravestone of J Dawson imagining him to be the 'Jack Dawson' of the movie but we saw none. I've been a Titanic fanatic for many years so this was an important moment for me. The identification of the Baby Goodwin can down to a fleck in the DNA of the the babies who matched, there is a fascinating documentary on YouTube about this where it turned out that two babies matched the DNA of the tiny body in the grave because they had shared an ancestor in the past 1000 years and also because a Canadian Mountie couldn't bring himself to obey orders and burn the tiny shoes of the 'Unknown Child'. We had earlier visited the smaller Catholic Cemetery for Titanic victims and sadly had no time to visit the Jewish Cemetery. If you are interested in this sort of stuff there is a LOT to see in Halifax (Windy City) so reserve a couple of days.
There is the Maritime Museum & the Immigration Museum (pier 21). The Halifax Explosion killed 2000 people and destroyed the city. The Empress of Ireland sinking which cost a 1000 lives.
The Titanic Cemetery is just a tiny part of Fairview which is huge. We drove by on the freeway without seeing anyway to get in so do your planning:-

In a world first, Ancestry.ca, Canada's leading
family history website, launched online the Canadian Passenger Lists,
1865-1935, which contains more than 7.2 million names, including 5.6 million
of those who travelled from around the world to start a new life in Canada.
The collection is fully indexed by name, month, year, ship and port of
origin and arrival of more than 4,000 ships, and includes original images for
more than 310,000 pages of historical records. It is the first time that these
records have been indexed and made available online.
The Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935, the originals of which are held
by the Library and Archives Canada (LAC), are the official records of the
arrival of the majority of people accepted as immigrants in Canada during this
key immigration period.
An estimated 11.6 million Canadians or 37 per cent of its current
population have ancestors included in this collection(1), which also includes
records for many vacationers and travellers, business people, crew members and
historical figures such as foreign leaders, scientists and celebrities.
The collection includes passenger lists from all the major ports of
arrival including Halifax, Saint John, North Sydney, Quebec City, Montreal,
Vancouver, Victoria and even east coast ports in the US where many arrived
before proceeding directly to Canada overland.
The main immigrant nationalities arriving in Canada during this period of
rapid growth were British, Irish, Ukrainian, Russian, German, Chinese and
Polish (the majority of French immigrants, the second largest Canadian
immigrant population, arrived prior to 1865).
Passengers from mainland Europe usually sailed to Great Britain where
they boarded trans-Atlantic ships at ports such as Liverpool, London and
Glasgow. Immigrants from Europe destined for western Canada landed at ports on
the east coast, then continued their journey by train. Ships arriving on the
west coast carried passengers from Asia, Australia and Honolulu.
Contained in the collection are records for a number of ships which
tragically never made it to their final Canadian destinations, including that
of RMS The Empress of Ireland, a passenger ship which was rammed in dense fog
on the St Lawrence River near Quebec on the 29th of May 1914 and sank in just
14 minutes. 1,012 passengers and crew drowned - a larger loss of life than
when RMS Titanic sank.
Individual records include information such as the passenger's first and
last name, estimated birth year, year of arrival, port of arrival and
departure, ship name, occupation, final destination in Canada and other family
members listed with their relationship indicated.

Pierre Berton Unveiling May 10 2016
Unveiling of the BRONZE BUST of celebrated Canadian author Pierre Berton in Whitehorse, Yukon on May 10th, 2016. This bust was commissioned by Rolf & Margaret Hougen and Family and created by Yukon Sculptor Harreson Tanner.
When Pierre Berton’s bronze bust was unveiled, it established a type of Yukon Writer’s Row on Main Street in downtown Whitehorse. Pierre Berton, the renowned Canadian author will join Jack London and Robert Service, two other iconic writers who also have their busts commemorated on the Street. Together the stories, poems and documentaries of these men put Yukon on the map for people all over the world.
“This is actually the 5th bronze bust commissioned by Rolf Hougen,’ said Yukon Sculptor Harreson Tanner. “ It was an incredible honour for me to have created both Berton and London. Chuck Buchanan did amazing work when he created Robert Service, Sam Steele and Angela Sidney. “
“We’re proud to have another great addition of artwork to adorn our streets,” said Whitehorse Mayor Dan Curtis. “I would like to personally acknowledge the beautiful work done by Harreson Tanner as well as the dedication by Rolf and Margaret Hougen for their lifelong commitment to Whitehorse and its citizens. Both visitors and residents will have the opportunity to enjoy these beautiful bronze busts for many years to come.”
“It is terrific that Rolf has commemorated such Yukon icons as Tagish Elder Angela Sidney and the “Lion of the Yukon”, Superintendent Sam Steele as well as Berton, London and Service,” said Elaine Taylor, Minister of Tourism and Culture. “ I know that tourists and locals know more about our history and heritage because of Rolf’s efforts not only with these bronze statues but with his family’s book, his generosity to Yukon Archives, his vast photo collection and his support of such cultural institutions as Arts Underground and MacBride Museum.”
Rolf Hougen was inspired to commission bronze busts of people who have made significant contributions to Yukon while on his honeymoon in Vienna in 1955. He wanted to create lasting memorials for generations to come. It has given him great delight to learn that tourists have begun to count trips to these busts as part of their tours of Whitehorse in order to learn more about Yukon history and Yukon art, just as he toured the bronze sculptures of Vienna over 60 years ago.

Halifax gets ready for the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic.
Innovative (ih.ca) shows a photo journey of the Friday preparations in Halifax, Nova Scotia for the events planned for the weekend to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic.
Nova Scotians and visitors are encouraged to attend free events April 14 and 15 in Halifax to mark the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking.
Halifax's role in 1912 was one of assistance, said David Wilson, Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage. Atlantic Canadians are known for lending a hand in difficult times so we hope that everyone will gather together to honour our place in history.
Join host George Jordan at the waterfront side of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic for a walking, candle-lit procession on Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. To symbolize Halifax's role in the tragedy and the conditions in 1912, a horse-drawn carriage with a period-style casket and pallbearers will lead the procession.
The procession will begin at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, move along the waterfront, left onto George Street, left onto Hollis, right onto Prince, right onto Argyle and into the Grand Parade for the Titanic Eve -- Night of the Bells event.
Gordon Pinsent, Canadian icon, will host Titanic Eve - Night of the Bells at the Grand Parade from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The event, presented by The Chronicle Herald, will tell the story of Titanic, its passengers and crew and Halifax's response to the tragedy. Over 20 performers will take the stage.
A moment of silence will be held at 12:27 a.m., marking the time recorded when the last wireless messages from the Titanic were received. Flares will be set off to symbolize the ship's call for help, members of the RCMP Pipe and Drums band will perform Amazing Grace, and churches in downtown Halifax that held memorial services for the victims in 1912 will ring their bells for a few minutes. People can bring a collapsible chair to the event and should dress for weather conditions.
The Herald was there 100 years ago and aided in breaking the news of Titanic's tragedy, said Ian Thompson, associate publisher of The Chronicle Herald.
From our extensive in-paper and online special coverage of the Titanic 100 anniversary leading to our presentation of Titanic Eve and Night of the Bells on Saturday, The Chronicle Herald is honoured to be supporting commemoration of this monumental anniversary 100 years later.
Visit The Chronicle Herald Titanic site at for more information.
The Titanic Spiritual Ceremony, an interfaith memorial service will be held in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery on Sunday, April 15 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Members of the Girl Guides of Canada, the Boy Scouts of Canada and sea cadets will lay flowers at the grave sites of the Titanic victims, 121 of which are buried at the cemetery.
People can enter the cemetery on foot through the Chisholm Avenue entrance and are reminded to respect grave markers as they make their way to the ceremony at the Titanic grave sites. Standing areas will be indicated. People will be able to pay personal respects to the victims' grave sites after the service. There will be no vehicle access to the cemetery.
The provincial, federal, municipal governments have contributed to the commemorative events as well as The Chronicle Herald, Emera, BellAliant, Famous Folks Communications, Egg Films, Canada Post, J.A. Snow Funeral Home and Hatfield Farm.
