KUALA LUMPUR | Best Places to Visit | Petronas Towers | KL Tower | Masjid Jamek Mosque | Malaysia
Best places to visit in the capital of Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur, or commonly known as KL, is the national capital and largest city in Malaysia. As the global city of Malaysia, it covers an area of 243 km2 and has an estimated population of 1.73 million as of 2016. Greater Kuala Lumpur, also known as the Klang Valley, is an urban agglomeration of 7.25 million people as of 2017. It is among the fastest growing metropolitan regions in Southeast Asia, in both population and economic development.
Kuala Lumpur is the cultural, financial, and economic centre of Malaysia. It is also home to the Parliament of Malaysia, and the official residence of the Malaysian King (Yang di-Pertuan Agong), the Istana Negara.
Kuala Lumpur has undergone rapid development in recent decades, and is home to the tallest twin buildings in the world, the Petronas Towers, which have since become an iconic symbol of Malaysian development.
The architecture of Kuala Lumpur is a mixture of old colonial influences, Asian traditions, Malay Islamic inspirations, modern, and postmodern architecture mix.
Late modern and postmodern architecture began to appear in the late-1990s and early-2000s. With the economic development, old buildings have been razed to make way for new ones. Buildings with all-glass shells exist throughout the city, with the most prominent examples being the Petronas Towers and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Kuala Lumpur's central business district today has shifted around the Kuala Lumpur city centre (KLCC) where many new and tall buildings with modern and postmodern architecture fill the skyline. Kuala Lumpur was ranked 10th among cities to have most buildings above 100 metres.

KL Detailed Travel Guide: 6 THINGS TO DO @ Masjid Jamek STN, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The Merdeka Square or Independence Square serves as a commemoration of Malaysia’s long road to independence, which came to be on 31st August 1957 after several years of being in the clutches of colonialism. Ironically, this arena that celebrates the independence of a young nation was also the British Administration district when Kuala Lumpur became the administrative capital of Selangor in 1880 and the Federated Malay States in 1896. The charming colonial buildings around the square reminds us that this was once the place where the colonists lived, worked and played.
Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman was once Batu Road as it was once a rough road that led to the tin mining areas of Batu and Rawang. Shops along the road were mostly owned by Indian moneylenders known as Chettiars. The Chettiars let out their shops to other Indian traders who operated shops, eateries, warehouses and other businesses.
The textile business flourished and between household names such as Globe Silk Store, G.S. Gill and P. Lal Store emerged. An Indian Mosque was built to serve the growing population of Indian merchants.

Indahnya Masjid Jamek Kuala Lumpur Malaysia
Masjid Jamek: Friday Mosque | My Mosque
The Masjid Jamek is a popular destination not only for tourists but also for worshippers. Situated in the confluence of Klang River and Gombak River, it is said that the history of Kuala Lumpur started at this very place. The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sir Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah, officially opened the mosque on December 23, 1909. It is the oldest mosque in Kuala Lumpur. There are three domes surrounding the prayer hall, the biggest of which measures 21 meters high. Moorish, Indo-Saracenic and Mughal architecture influenced its architectural design, and interestingly, the site of Masjid Jamek used to be a Malay burial ground. Every Friday, the mosque is crowded with people up to the street and the LRT Station nearby. Hence, it is also referred to as the Friday Mosque.

Masjid Jamek in KL
Masjid Jamek Mosque, also known as Friday Mosque, is recognised as the oldest Islamic place of worship in Kuala Lumpur. Overlooking the Klang River, it offers breathtaking photo opportunities for travellers due to the combination of ancient Moorish, Islam and Mughal architectural styles, verdant surroundings, and distant views of KL’s other iconic landmarks. Built in 1907 by British architect Arthur Benison Hubback, Masjid Jamek Mosque served as the main centre of worship for the local Muslim community until the Masjid Negara (National Mosque) was officially opened to the public in 1965. Surrounding the main prayer hall are three domes, the tallest of which measures at 20 metres, flanked by two brick minarets that stand over 25 metres tall.

[Saraghuz] Masjid Jamek, Most Beautiful Mosque In South East Asia, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Jamek Mosque, Kuala Lumpur
Jamek Mosque or Masjid Jamek is one of the oldest mosques in Kuala Lumpur. Prior to the construction of Masjid Negara in 1965, it was the principal mosque in Kuala Lumpur, serving the local populace from the nearby areas in Kampung Baru and local Muslim traders. Masjid Jamek has been gazetted as the national heritage building by the National Heritage Department in 2005.
The mosque was built on a former Malay Muslims burial ground on a site of the confluence of the Gombak and Klang Rivers in Kuala Lumpur. The site is also where ‘Kuala Lumpur’ had attained its present name. The British colonial government saw the need for building a mosque for the Malay civil servants in the enclave where would later be developed as the core of Kuala Lumpur.
Jamek Mosque is an example of the ‘official’ British architecture in Malaysia, which involved a combination of Moorish and Mughal features. Red and white masonry bands comprise the exterior walls of the mosque. Further similarities to Moorish mosques can be found in the colonnaded arches set in grids and detailed with alternative bands of brick, plaster and marble.
The plan of the mosque follows a traditional Mughal mosque layout, with the prayer hall opening out into a walled courtyard. The mosque is flanked by two minarets and numerous smaller minarets with extensive crenellations and pilasters on the roof level. The three main onion domes surmounting the prayer hall and the minarets resemble the famous Mughal mosques.
