James Ensor's world
The intense light of the North Sea coast had a profound effect on the Belgian painter James Ensor, as did his hometown Ostend’s colourful carnival tradition, and the contents of his family’s curiosity shop. Step into Ensor’s world in this short video – narrated in his own words, derived from his letters and his poetic musings on art. Video created for the exhibition 'Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans' at the Royal Academy of Arts:

James Ensor: A collection of 148 works (HD)
Description: Ensor's father, James Frederic Ensor, born in Brussels of English parents, was a cultivated man who studied engineering in England and Germany. Ensor's mother, Maria Catherina Haegheman, was Belgian. Ensor himself lacked interest in academic study and left school at the age of fifteen to begin his artistic training with two local painters. From 1877 to 1880, he attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, where one of his fellow students was Fernand Khnopff. Ensor first exhibited his work in 1881. From 1880 until 1917, he had his studio in the attic of his parents' house. His travels were very few: three brief trips to France and two to the Netherlands in the 1880s, and a four-day trip to London in 1892.
During the late 19th century much of his work was rejected as scandalous, particularly his painting Christ's Entry Into Brussels in 1889 (1888–89). The Belgium art critic Octave Maus famously summed up the response from contemporaneous art critics to Ensor's innovative (and often scathingly political) work: Ensor is the leader of a clan. Ensor is the limelight. Ensor sums up and concentrates certain principles which are considered to be anarchistic. In short, Ensor is a dangerous person who has great changes. . . . He is consequently marked for blows. It is at him that all the harquebuses are aimed. It is on his head that are dumped the most aromatic containers of the so-called serious critics. Some of Ensor's contemporaneous work reveals his precocious response to this criticism. For example, the 1887 etching Le Pisseur depicts the artist urinating on a grafitied wall declaring (in the voice of an art critic) Ensor set un fou or Ensor is a Madman.
But his paintings continued to be exhibited, and he gradually won acceptance and acclaim. In 1895 his painting The Lamp Boy (1880) was acquired by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, and he had his first solo exhibition in Brussels.[5] By 1920 he was the subject of major exhibitions; in 1929 he was named a Baron by King Albert, and was the subject of the Belgian composer Flor Alpaerts's James Ensor Suite; and in 1933 he was awarded the band of the Légion d'honneur. Even in the first decade of the 20th century, however, his production of new works was diminishing, and he increasingly concentrated on music—although he had no musical training, he was a gifted improviser on the harmonium, and spent much time performing for visitors.[6] Against the advice of friends, he remained in Ostend during World War II despite the risk of bombardment. In his old age he was an honored figure among Belgians, and his daily walk made him a familiar sight in Ostend. He died there after a short illness, on 19 November 1949.

James Ensor's 'The Artist Surrounded by Evil Spirits'
This painting is a bit like a metaphor for the world that Ensor lived in. He saw himself as quite rational and sane, and all the people around him quite the opposite. Curator Adrian Locke discusses Ensor's lithograph 'The Artist Surrounded by Evil Spirits’ (1898) and the determinedly anti-establishment life of the Belgian painter. Story
A face hidden behind a mask, a slightly ominous still life, the colorful Ostend rooftops, they all represent the masterpieces of Belgian artist James Ensor. During his painting career this reformer of Belgian modern art developed a personal style, evolving from realism to expressionism and surrealism. This film by director Paul Haesaerts is a striking portrait of the artist, using Ensors own texts to strengthen the images of his paintings.

2009 Ostend Tribute Ensor Dylan TAZ
Ode to James Ensor and Bob Dylan
Openingsconcert
Sixty years ago Arno was born.Sixty years ago James Ensor passed away. The worldfamous painting by Ensor De Intocht van Christus te Brussel (1889) holds the same ideas as Bob Dylans Desolation Row (1965), the closing song on his legendary record Highway 61 Revisited. Ensor and Dylan are both key figures for Arno and he wishes to honour them with a unique performance. In front of The James Ensor House a stage will be placed, on the background a replica of the specific painting. Several choirs from Ostend will fill the stage and sing Desolation Row, in a new music arrangement by Serge Feys and the TAZ-Band.
WITH: Ier & Gunter directed by Dirk Ooms, Voces Maris, Camerata Ostendia, Arte Vocali, Canta Fideles, TAZ-band: Serge Feys (keyboards), Mirko Banovic (bass), Bruno Fevery (guitar), Sam Gysel (drums)
Arno: Ensor is famous worldwide, even more than in his own country. The opening of the festival has to be something with Ensor. In the Getty Museum in LA the painting by Ensor LEntrée de Christ is exibited. I have a book from the Getty, in it the painting next to a number of Bob Dylan. I thought: music, art Why cant we do something with that? The song lasts 12 minutes, thats the ouverture. I wont sing, the choirs will
Temptation: The Demons of James Ensor
There are demons. And then there are Ensor's demons. Meticulously conserved, Ensor’s The Temptation of Saint Anthony is on view for the first time in the museum in a major exhibition showcasing the visionary talent of this avant-garde artist. This exhibition debuts this beautifully conserved work in the museum alongside generous loans from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp, and other notable institutions, offering extraordinary insights into Ensor’s often dark, mystifying, and fiercely individualistic art.
