Indonesia: Value chains in furniture industry in Jepara, Central Java, Indonesia
The short film gave a special attention to the Indonesian wood furniture sector in Central Java, as an example of an industry where the value chain analysis has been used to identify upgrading opportunities and to support industries development. It was part of the ILO's effort to increase competitiveness and productivity of small medium enterprises in the globalising economy, in particular the furniture industry. The film was already broadcasted by a national TV station (only available in Bahasa Indonesia).
Carving a niche in the global market: The woodworkers of Jepara
Based on a long tradition of skilled family trade, the woodworking industry in Jepara, Indonesia, is branching out into global markets by investing in sustainable timber. With the national timber legality license now compatible with export licenses to the European Union, trade opportunities are expanding beyond borders. Scientists at the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) are finding the connections between sustainable supply chains and better business for local people.

Survival of Jepara Furniture
Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and its partners is carrying out research project entitled Mahogany and teak furniture: action research to improve value chain efficiency and enhance livelihoods project (2008-2013). The project is funded by ACIAR and implemented in partnership with the Jepara District Government, the Jepara Multi stakeholder Forum, the Forestry Research and Development Agency of Indonesian Ministry of Forestry and Bogor Agricultural University. The project aims to improve mahogany and teak small-scale furniture enterprises in Jepara through enhancing the structure and function of the furniture industry. Improved governance and efficiency may secure furniture enterprises, enhance incomes for small-scale producers, and position them in a greater role within the value chain.
The movie in English and Bahasa Indonesia is describing the struggle of small-scale producers and CIFOR's action research to improve the small-scale producers. It tell us about the common problems faced by the small scale furniture industry, particularly producers. This movie is expected to improve the value of Jepara furniture, which is not only seen as a commodity but also as a creative and cultural heritage. The movie targets furniture consumers, policy makers, practitioners, activists, traders and academicians.
