Johnstone Pipe Band (with a new tune) at the 2018 Scottish Championships at Dumbarton
This is Johnstone Pipe Band's March, Strathspey and Reel set from Levengrove Park in Dumbarton in the Grade One Competition at the Scottish Pipe Band Championships on 28 July 2018.
The band is under the direction of Pipe Major Keith James Bowes. The leading drummer is Leslie Galbraith.
The set comprises the following tunes:
March: Alan Dodd's Farewell to Scotland [PM John M MacKenzie, 1922 – 1996] Strathspey: Tulloch Castle [Roderick Campbell, 1873 - 1937] Reel: John Morrison of Assynt House [Peter R. MacLeod, 1878 - 1965]
I was delighted to hear that Johnstone Pipe Band had drawn this set because I really wanted to hear this fine march. Its composer, John M MacKenzie, was born in Campbeltown in 1922. As a teenager he joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders - he was to become a Pipe Major (1946 - 1952). After a spell abroad in Africa he returned to Scotland to become Pipe Major at Queen Victoria School in Dunblane.
I haven't been able (as yet) to find out much about Allan Dodd. He was a competing piper in New Zealand (thanks plasticpiper) in the 1950's and 1960's. He won the New Zealand Open 2/4 March Championship in 1961, 1962 and 1967 and the Open Strathspey and Reel in 1963. There's a reel called Allan R Dodd's Taxi and a jig called Allan Dodd's Walking Stick in Lewis Turrell's Collection of Bagpipe Music. Lewis Turrell was a New Zealander so there may be a connection ....

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
The Picture of Dorian Gray is the only published novel by Oscar Wilde. The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is impressed by Dorian's beauty and becomes infatuated with him, believing his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. Espousing a new hedonism, Lord Henry suggests the only things worth pursuing in life are beauty and fulfillment of the senses. Realizing that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian (whimsically) expresses a desire to sell his soul to ensure the portrait Basil has painted would age rather than himself. Dorian's wish is fulfilled, plunging him into debauched acts. The portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging. The Picture of Dorian Gray is considered a work of classic gothic fiction with a strong Faustian theme.
